Many people enjoy sports because they played sports as children, or have people they know who play sports. I think you'll find people who don't have a personal connection to the game who are still interested in it are a rare demographic.
This makes Video Game "e-sports" an incredibly attractive spectator sport, because the bar for entry is so low, almost anyone can get into it. I think in the next few decades given current trends, e-sports will overtake traditional sports in volume of fans (over-all).
