Once we started earning their trust by doing what we said we would do and proving that we were better than the insurgents for day to day life, the wild west feel was gone. He is westernized as fuck. He has lived in western society. He is obsessed about basketball. He enjoys luxury even more than his father. He likes computer games and Eric Clapton. He embraces american pop culture.
He is also closer to his people. He debuted his wife in a public event. He engages with them more often. Tourism and internet usage in North Korea have soared under him. He's also cleaning the government of corrupt government officials, trying to install in power people loyal to him.
He is ramping up the nuclear rhetoric because it's the only thing North Korea has going on. He knows uniting both Korea's would be for the best, but if he doesn't play his cards right he also knows he'll instantly be prosecuted and judged for crimes against humanity. He could very well become the leader of several Chaebols in a post-communist North Korea, he would be able to keep or even ramp up his privileged lifestyle, but with greater freedom and much less political intrigue. This would really secure the future of his dinasty, instead of clinging to an endangered communist shithole.
He just has to play his cards right. He'll do it, but it'll take time. Trump is probably the only one able to make this happen in the near future.
