Nordic countries are much smaller and less diverse than the US (like comparing a go-kart to a Mac truck). Putting the programs they have in the US would require a much larger, slower, and more expensive bureaucracy. The US is also a very diverse society in terms of cultural values, so how the programs were delivered and administered would vary based on region. It may work better to some extent, but not nearly as well as they do in Nordic countries.

Not really. Norway is the western country that handled the economic recession the best, and even now that the price of oil has dropped like a rock, we're still doing fine.
Norway isn't as dependent on oil as people seem to think, partially because we invest a lot of that money into other sectors. We also own 2% of all European stocks through our massive oil fund.
I also believe we have one of the highest birth rates in western Europe. It's still a bit too low to sustain the population, but at least it's something.
