I've noticed this too. It's accepted by pretty much everyone that once a person's whiteness is compromised by another ethnicity, they are no longer white, but may be considered a member of the other racial group (especially in the case of mulattoes). No, three generations might pass for a highly tanned white person, but it is still easily noticeable to any who look. My grandfather lived as a highly tanned white person, everyone accepted him as that (honestly he was the biggest WASP I knew), but it is obvious that it was not a tan if you cared to contemplate it.
