I was 14 at the time. A lot of people who I was friends with had parents that work in NYC. I live in northern New Jersey, so my town and a lot of others are all bedroom communities in the nice suburbs for people that work in NY. I knew a couple people who had a parent die and several others that had aunts/uncles die. People were getting pulled out of school left and right that day.
Then the whole world went to shit.
I was a hard on Muslim back then and believed that this was a setup by the Americans to invade other countries

I was nine at the time, not even a few days into the fourth grade when it happened. I'll never forget the way the announcement came over the PA. The teachers were bewildered as to what was going on about as much as we were but we could tell from their faces that shit was pretty bad. This one kid was crying because his daddy was an officer that worked as an officer in the city. One by one kids started getting picked up by worried parents untill there was barely any of us left. I was one of the few that took the bus ride home that day on an empty bus.
I still remember the colum of dust and smoke from the overpass.
All I remember was my parents and neighbors crying and me wondering what the big deal was.

I learned there were assholes in the world. I was six, and understood what happened. I understood what I saw as people fell from the towers on TV, and buildings come down. Ever since, I've become paranoid that a bomb would go off near me, and I would either die then and there, or I would have to spring into action and try to save the people around me. It's literally why I decided to become a nurse. It's why I hit the gym 3 times a week (still pretty weak by /fit/ standards). I want to be ready.
