Because the original covenant was for Jews only, they were a sekrit club for God. Jesus made a new covenant for everyone.
Sacred Scripture is God's slow revelation of Himself to mankind. When mankind was primitive, God revealed Himself in such a way that the primitive mind could comprehend, appreciate, and revere. When mankind had grown culturally and intellectually, He revealed Himself in full in the person of Jesus Christ.
God is immutable. There is no change between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New. The God of the Old Testament gave mercy, but only to those who repent, just as Christ does. The God of the Old Testament condemns the unrighteous to physical, temporal death, just as Christ does in the New Testament, only now the death is eternal and spiritual. Much as the God of the Old Testament promises temporal salvation to the Israelites who abide in Him, Christ promises spiritual salvation to the New Israelites - the Church - who abides in the New Israel - Christ. The Old Law was not abrogated, but fulfilled and given an even nobler character by Christ the King, as he said.

There are a number of ireconsiable differences between the teachings of Jesus and the teachings of the Old Testament God. They contradict themself on key issues so a new religion had to be made. Early Christians such as Paul came up with all sorts of reasons to ignore Old Testament Law (for instance Paul claimed it wasn't divinely inspired but was written by a bunch of random angels). Aquinas made up an idea that some laws are "divine" and others are "ceramonial" and it turns out 99% of the old testament is not divine.

Here's the thing. The Old Testament God is amoral. He isn't good or bad, he acts on passions and personal needs rather than some absolute morality. Yawheh wants worship so he made a deal with the Jews (Abraham's pact) Abraham's descedents will only worship Yawheh in-exchange Yawheh will help the Jews become a powerful society.
The Jews operate on Nietzchean Master Morality. What strengthens the Jewish community is good, what harms it is bad. Conquering other people and taking their stuff is good for the community, therefor it's good. Treating foreigners better than your own people harms your community so it's bad. Work togeather with other Jews to win even if a few Goys have to get hurt. This is basically how Israel still works today but the secular liberal Jews are race traitors.
New Testament God is a completly different identity that operates on slave morality. "The meek shall inherit the earth" "blessed are the meek" etc. The Jewish master morality is now seen as evil and oppressive, it's so oppressive they even oppress God!
