They're, like Cobra and Jennings, considered ghetto guns on account of being very cheap to purchase. The XD isn't a comparison to the Shield, it's a different class of handgun. The XDs is pretty similarly priced compared to the Shield though, and if you compare the two you'll find the XDs to have a higher build quality to it and more metal parts vs polymer. I've owned an XDs and it was reliable, accurate, overall a great gun. Unless you're getting a Shield without the manual safety (which initially was impossible), you get no room to crow about safety memes because that's just as likely to have a Murphy fuckup as the grip safety.
I'd still happily carry a (safetyless) Shield, mind. Both are good guns.

I can't own a gun because I tried to kill myself over 4 years ago and was briefly institutionalized. I was very fucked in the head and have very visible self harm scars from that long ago still. I've done a lot of growing up and haven't reached that point since, but to own a gun I'd need a shrink to clear me. It sucks, but if I payed the $ for that, I'd possibly be able to own a gun of my own. FYI, the XD's mag release is ambidextrous. The S&W M&P is basically a Glock clone with a nicer grip--neither it nor the Glock are lefty-friendly there. Then again, the XD's slide release is still on the left side of the gun, so you may decide the mag release is not that big a deal.
If you don't use the Blue Label program, strongly consider buying online using slickguns.com and gunwatcher.net to find a good deal. You can ship it to a local FFL and save $100 easy. Ask /k/ if you need help with it, they're happy to walk you through it. Also, S&W sometimes (but not always) has rebates for cops/mil, easy enough to see if they do on slickguns.
