Anime is great. As with any media source, most of it is trash, but there's usually anywhere from 0-6 shows per season that are passable, decent, or even good. Sometimes it's 0. Sometimes it can be 5-6.
If you're not a weirdo, you can enjoy watching it. However watching it should almost always be done by yourself because watching it with someone isn't good unless it's something like AoT but even then it's not a thing for many people to participate in.
I can go into any social situation and still be an anime watcher. I just don't bring up anime, it's that simple. Know your audience, don't talk to people about anime when they don't want to hear it.

Edge of Tomorrow was completely different in every way except for the initial premise. In the book, the Mimics learned from time travel as well, and their whole system was different.
