If Japan can maintain around its current GDP even with the population dropping. Say Japan's population drops 30% in 50 years and GDP is at par with what it is now. The average Japanese will be 30% wealthier.
With a declining population you can use automation to maintain GDP with increased productivity or even increase GDP growth.
Japan's problem is its debt. It's going to have to find ways to cut debt. But it's completely possible that the average Japanese will be better off when there's much less of them.
