I've used nodeJS and Mongo. For god's sake everyone stay away for now. MongoDB was the biggest piece of shit I've ever dealt with (40k concurrent user site 24/7).
NoSQL stuff has it's place, but I'll never use mongo in place of a relational database. I switched to couchbase for the majority of 'fast' data storage, and it's better. It still sucks, but at least it's not mongo.

I went to Node Summit in San Francisco. I thought maybe there'd be some great workshops or a chance to see how the early adopters were using it.
It turns out that almost every professional application of NodeJS is running on a customized core to account for the shortcomings of the language.
There were almost as many women there as men (this should be a HUGE red flag), and most presentations were being done by companies trying to sell you some framework they've built, or 'cloud deployment' bullshit that almost nobody needs.

On a related topic, I work at an university IT, couple of years back we made a new dept that was basically a containment group for housing the gender/racial equality hires that were being forced upon us. The group has no real duties, they basically design websites/databases that are never used, are burned to the ground and rebuilt as part of "efficiency studies". We made the group's orgchart exceedingly complex and much more tiered than need be so they could complete with each other for forced promotions within their own little group, not polluting the rest of the real IT workers. Tons of infighting, tons of back-stabbing, all to move up the dept ladder which leads to nowhere.
Its worked brilliantly and these "techs" are too dumb to realize they've basically been given coloring books to pass the time. I'm not too happy that the real time is overworked and understaffed due to this situation but I'd rather do the work of 2 people than go behind a worker who got hired for no other reason they were the only minority to put something IT-related like "MS Word experience" on their resume and straighten up the godawful mess they'd make every single day.

PHP is great if you're going for the bare minimum that can possibly work. Nothing beats the ease of just stuffing a PHP file on the server with SFTP or something and going drinking.
But if you're actually building something bigger than that, there are a precious few benefits with PHP. Suddenly the ability to stuff code into the web root isn't such a killer feature. It starts to look like a normal software project. Might as well use a normal software platform to do it.
