As disappointed I am in Trump's VP pick, you've got to trust in Trump on this one. There are a lot of factors that go into picking a VP, aside from their stance on the issues.
Chemistry is one factor; the two have to be able to work together and work well together. Trump's been meeting with these guys from a long while now and has a pretty good sense on who he meshes well with. This is where I think Christie may have lacked, compared to the other possible picks. When those two were on stage together at some of the rallies back during the primaries, you could just tell that they didn't quite "click".
You also need a VP who is a good public speaker and can debate well. Pence is a good speaker and is clear and concise. Flynn on the other hand does not do well when speaking, often jumps around a bit, gets words mixed up, etc. Carson also is a bore. While he speaks in a clam manner, he doesn't exactly grab your attention and is easily forgettable. He never had a strong debate or speech during the primaries and debates.
You don't want to shackle a corpse to yourself by adding someone with too much baggage. This is the problem with Gingrich; he just has so much going against him.
On top of that, you need someone who will secure the base and in turn not alienate them. This would be another strike against Flynn. If he were to pick him, the hard-line conservative base would see this as further evidence that Trump is drifting further to the left, making them less compelled to show up to the polls to vote for him.
Pence is really the safe choice. Another thing to keep in mind is that the VP has almost no power. The only power they have is being able to vote in the event of a tie in the Senate. I'm sure we'll find out more as to why he may have picked him when Trump holds his next press conference to discuss his pick, maybe alleviate some fears about Pence's stance on some of the issues. Trust in Trump; he knows what he's doing.

I'm not happy about the Pence pick, even if it is supposed to appeal to NeverTrump, but I can see one, and only ONE way for this to be a positive for Trump amoung Independents:

This guy is basically THE complete opposite of Trump in demeanor and policy. Personally, I don't like his decisions on TPP, the Iraq War, and his positions on abortion and gay marriage are not favorable to me (someone mentioned this was insurance against some crazy lefty assassination if he gets in, but I digress).
We know Trump is against all of this stuff, and I don't believe he'll waver from that core, but this also indicates he's working on preventing an echo-chamber from developing in the Oval Office. We've seen how out-of-touch and dangerous a President can be otherwise with Obama.
Pence brings a different viewpoint to the table which will keep the evangelical voters in mind, yet by extending this olive branch makes him more flexible without losing their vote. If he had someone who was just like him, and wholeheartedly agreed with ALL of his proposals, it would be a waste of resources.
I admit I really wanted someone else, but you have to play your pieces right in this chess game.
Let Sessions stay in the Senate and hopefully become speaker. Let Flynn/Matis become Sec. Of Def/State. Let Rand become Treasurer. Let Christie become AG.
The VP in all fairness cannot act on it's own without the direct orders of the President barring an Assassination (KEK forbid). Let them have their conservative figurehead in the office, smiling and looking pretty for the camera while the real work is done in the shadows.
