The death toll would have been higher at the end of the day if American troops had invaded Japan.Many would refute this statement without having read about Guadalcanal, Okinawa, or Tarawa. Read about how the Japanese gave absolutely zero forethought about whether or not they died as long as they held off American troops for as long as possible and killed as many American troops as possible. Read about their defence system, how they developed pillboxes with interlinking tunnels and hideaway spots to create interlaced firing zones designed to allow them to fight for every inch of ground.
Japan was notoriously crazy in WW2. They might not have been the strongest or the most numerous, but pound for pound they were willing to grind it out and fight to the last against any other nation, and they would gladly pay the price in blood if it meant they took their opponents down with them.
Even if Hirohito would have surrendered without the use of nuclear weapons, there’s no guarantee that his generals would have. Several of them were resistant to surrender AFTER the bombs got dropped, in that time given the circumstance it was dangerous to think this army were going to give up the ghost before that, leading to the conclusion of absolutely not.
Dropping the bombs on Japan may have been a real grade-A bastard move, but the bottom line is that the only other alternative was to slog across Japan inch by inch and scorch the whole chain of islands, because that’s the only way you were going to dislodge the Japanese military; by going house to house, street to street, and burning them out. Just like how it went in the fortress systems of Okinawa.
It’s a terrible circumstance, and does not make it any less a tragedy. To have so many blindly attack the actions of the United States without an in depth analysis of the war, instead opting to be spoon fed information is a shame.
