A few things led me to become disillusioned with the "atheist movement". The first was the growing influence of Islam throughout Europe. Not necessarily just Islamic terrorism but the range of social implications that come with large scale immigration from the third-world.
Because the logical conclusion of atheism is that nothing has *absolute* value, there is no objective moral code and tradition/history/culture isn't terribly important, the vast majority of atheists find themselves on the Left. In fact, one study suggested that about 80% of atheists were self-identifying liberals. As a result, these people are completely incapable of dealing with the threat that Islam currently poses, and will continue to pose as the Muslim population in Europe grows, because they buy into the whole "oppression/racism/Islamophobia" narrative that SJW's peddle. Atheists almost always go through the most ridiculous intellectual hurdles to claim that Christianity and Judaism are just as bad as Islam. Anyone can see that, at this moment in time, that is a blatant lie.
If the West is to win the coming war against Islam, it will need to win on both the demographic front and the ideological front. It's no secret that, the more secular a society gets, the less emphasis it places on the family unit, the lower the overall birth rate and the more tolerance it has for SJW-tier degeneracy. Western Europe should seek to mirror the Religious Right in America, abstain from social democratic policies that create an apathetic society and a culture of dependence and abstain from deriding Christians in an attempt to come across as intellectually superior gentle-sirs; especially if you're too much of a shitbag to say the same thing to Muslims.

I strongly doubt atheism itself is the cause but rather a common symptom of a culture in decline, based on what little I remember of "The Fall of Empires", the commonality being that the once strong convictions shared almost ubiquitously by members of a society become less prevalent, which is further compounded by the addition of foreigners who never shared, nor intend to adopt these values.
