TL;DR By choosing Pence, Trump is chasing 10% of his party (that would probably vote for him anyway when it came time to pull the lever and the reality of a President Hillary Clinton set in) while at the same time alienating a far larger chunk of the electorate who will be completely turned off by Pence's hardline social conservative positions.
