It's both. It's a trend to be accepting of gays and give them their own spaces, but there are also not that many gays and straight people mostly do it to give themselves a pat on the back. I know a lot of gay people who don't like this kind of stuff because it feels like coddling and they find it very patronizing. Those people are out in the work force and older, though.
