I bought the Voightlander 28mm finder and it was a great little finder. I honestly never used it though, I ended up preferring the LCD screen over using a finder. I would offer it to you but I sold it a few weeks ago.

Adding the viewfinder makes it that much bigger and more awkwardly shaped for putting in my jacket pocket, you can't see where the camera is focusing or any exposure data or anything like that if you want it, and the LCD works perfectly fine for me. I think the latency on the LCD is low enough and the brightness is high enough in anything except for very bright direct sunlight.

I like having the LCD set up to have no information or numbers or grids any of that shit cluttering up your view initially, but then once you half-press the shutter it shows the exposure information so you can quickly make sure the camera didn't pick any retarded settings or you didn't accidentally set the ISO to 25600 in broad daylight or something like that.

I picked up the d5500 and even though smaller the grip feels so much better....deeper if that makes sense. But of course it cost a few hundred more.

My question is does the older versions like the d5300 or d5200 have the same bigger handle?

Look up a slide strap on eBay, or buy a Black Rapid if you're into name brands. If you're a casual, maybe a Gordy's strap.

>>2870907
I made that mistake unfortunately. I won $500 off a photo comp and decided to get my first dslr and I didn't do that much touchy-feely. Though on the plus side its light as shit compared to the D7200 with its magnesium frame and everything. I've pretty much shot myself in the foot as far as upgrading any time soon.

Also for my own question, what are good suggestions for upgrading from a D3300? My budget is about $1000, and I'd either want something more powerful to replace the D3300 for work, or something smaller for travelling/when I can't carry a DSLR.

Tokina 11-16 or Canon 10-22 for nightclub photography (mainly)...?

I think the 2.8 of the Tokina will help with overview shots. The Canon goes 3.5 and I shoot a 60D so the high ISO performance isn't that great... Tokina is sharper IIRC.

But I can get a 10-22 for half the price new while the Tokina is used. FUARK. Would the extra 200 euros be worth it?

What lenses could you recommend for the Olympus OM-1 (or OM series in general)? I have now got the standard Zuiko 50mm, a Vivitar 35-70mm (which is supposed to be a crap lens but I like it very much) and a Sigma 75-250mm which I hate because it's flimsy, but I got it nearly for free).

Nikons big boy cameras are the D7x00 series, so go figure.

Noob here who has been lurking and trying to figure out what camera/lens to buy.

I will be visiting China during 4 months and I plan to use that opportunity to get better at photography. I will mainly be photographing people, streets and landscapes. So I need a camera/lens that...

- is easy to travel with
- won't make me a primary target of thieves
- allows me to "grow"
- isn't overly expensive since I'm a beginner

The Sony A6000 looks promising from reviews I've read and videos I've watched, except that the kit lens doesn't seem to get much praise (maybe it's good enough though?). Is getting a cheap vintage lens a viable option?

What are your recommendations, /p/? Preferably $700-800 or less...
>>

>The Sony A6000 looks promising from reviews I've read and videos I've watched, except that the kit lens doesn't seem to get much praise (maybe it's good enough though?).

The a6000 is a good choice. The kit lens isn't anything special (no kit lens really is), but it is good enough. Most of the distortion issues it has can be fixed in post. It's sharpness and speed are all acceptable, and it is small as hell.

I'd recommend a 50mm prime lens with it too. Probably a good place to start.

>Is getting a cheap vintage lens a viable option?

Very much so. Especially on the a6000. It has a short flange distance, so it can adapt almost any lens ever made.

Check this site out:

Almost everything listed is under $100.
>>
>>2871085
Thank you. When you say 50mm, do you mean after multiplying it by 1.5 (APS-C to FF)? Or actually putting a 50mm lens on the A6000?

I'm quite new to this as you can see.
>>
>>2871096
Get a 50mm for portraits and 35mm for general shooting stuff.
>>
>>2871096
Get a lens that is labeled 50mm. The crop factor is just exactly that, a crop factor (i.e. the image is 1.5x smaller than a full frame/35mm sensor). I love my 50mm even though it means I usually miss a shot because my fov is too small

Thank you. Just pulled the trigger on the A6000. I only got the kit lens for now but I think I'll look into getting 35mm and/or 50mm primes eventually.

How do I get decent at taking photos in 2 months (before my trip)?
>>
>>2871126
>How do I get decent at taking photos in 2 months (before my trip)?
Practice. Try out settings, different kind of subjects, look at lots of photos (Flickr etc...) and try to imitate them. And don't forget to enjoy taking the photos first. The whole thing becomes pointless when it becomes a chore.
Also Aperture priority for subject separation, shutter priority for freezing time or blurring movement, manual for panorama shots. Stay away from the more automated sweeping panorama bullshit. And get a light travel tripod.
>>
>>2871126

>How do I get decent at taking photos in 2 months (before my trip)?

Take as many pictures as you can in varying light/times of the day. This way you know how the hardware works so you don't accidentally take a bunch of photos at iso 6400 outside on a bright sunny day.

Look around the web, there are lots of guides all over the web. Here is a simple enough one that explains iso/aperture/shutter speed:

Also look into lightroom. It can correct a lot of mistakes.

But honestly, you can shift it to Auto mode and hit most photos decent enough to share with friends/family.

I'm in the market for a Nikon D5500 and I've been looking all over the place to buy it for 600-700 dollars. I wont be able to buy it from any retailer like Best Buy or Nikon's website, as they sell for around 900 there, so I've gone on a hunt through the internet.

I have a few candidates so far and I was wondering if you guys could help me out. Apologies for any of my ignorance when discussing this topic/if this isn't really allowed on the board:

I first was wondering whether I should buy from DigiRev, as I have seen their videos and feel like I can trust them. I did a bit of research and found out they were more or less grey market.. So the warranty would be basically non-existent.

Then I looked through ebay and found a few sellers with amazingly high review rates and lots of products sold, plus they were offering good deals. I'm still unsure to this as... you know, Ebay.

Finally, I read up and saw that buying refurbished isn't all too bad.. So I think my safest bet is to buy from an amazon seller...

What do you guys think?

>>
>>2871285
why the fuck would you get a d5k
>>
>>2871338
Because he doesn't know he can't use the great cheap screwdrive AF lenses and has to pay 3-5x more for the modern shittier optics.
>>
>>2871341
I'm all for screwdriver lenses, especially on a budget, but plenty of AF-S lenses have better optics than their screwdriver equivalents. At worst they're the same optically, I can't think of any that are worse. I will admit a lot of the AF-S ones are a downgrade in build quality, though.

But yeah, I would never buy a brand new D5x00 when you can get an older used D7x00 for the same price or less.
>>
>>2871346
>>2871341
At the same time, the D5500 is, asides from ergonomics and screwdrive, about the same as a D7000 with a newer sensor. Pretty capable camera, just not terribly well priced between the used D7000s and new D3300s. Not bad for people looking at new only though.
>>
>>2871346
That is not the point. The gimped mount on the D3x00/D5x00 makes it impossible to use AF on the screwdrive lenses, making them manual only without proper metering effectively reducing the lens options on those cameras, especially when you are on a budget.
It's just stupid to go for those cameras, especially new. Except when the only lens he will use is the kit lens, but in that case he is in the wrong neighborhood.
>>
>>2871348
For people looking for new the Pentax cameras give much more value for their money.
>>

I was buying some Bronica lenses on KEH and I saw they had this adapter for sale for dirt cheap and I just had to get it just because it's so ridiculous. Good thing the adapter has a tripod foot on it because this is hilariously front-heavy.

Also I ordered a 67mm Nikon lens cap and they accidentally sent me an SB-17 speedlight instead, I guess somebody really fucked up and misread LC-67 as SB-17.

I honestly thought you were asking for a film camera that you were going to carry around but not take photos with, and I was about to suggest you buy whatever you can find as long as it says Leica on it.

But as far as recommending a video camera, I have no idea.
>>
>>2871499
Those were American B&H prices. Here in Japan the 50mm is about the same but the 35mm is 22,000 yen or around $220. Sounds like you got a steal, nice.

Pentax is kind of a ghost system in Island China, nobody really uses it anymore. They just can't compete with Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fuji. I've seen a lot more people with ancient film Pentaxes than with digital. The gear is really hard to find and many places don't bother carrying it so it really gives off a death spiral vibe. No availability so no users, no users so no availability.

I can't find a concrete answer to this question anywhere on the internet...

Will any modern tripod work with a TLR camera? I'm looking for one for my Mamiya C33 but I'm not sure about what heads will fit it.

>Will any modern tripod work with a TLR camera? I'm looking for one for my Mamiya C33 but I'm not sure about what heads will fit it.

I can't tell you which tripods will work "best" with it, but as far as which will fit - the standard tripod mounting screw size is 1/4"-20 threads (some bigger and/or older cameras take a 3/8"-16 thread screw) and that's the size that fits the C33. So since you don't need to find some weird sized tripod, just look up reviews of popular tripods and find one you like. The fact that you're using a C33 and/or a TLR shouldn't affect your options.

You could buy a very cheap used one and make your own legs from sturdy round wood. Could look really nice too, if you give it a nice lacquer. This would give a nice price/quality ratio.

Yeah it just came up, now that I think of it, I might even try it myself. I got a very flimsy tripod for free, just chopping off the legs and adding wooden ones would be a fun project. The weight of the wood would make it quite stable. Of couse, retractable legs are somewhat more work, but it shouldn't be rocket science. Even so, there's always a question thread on /diy/

Here's something I just found, the plan for the legs seems quite thorough. And of course, everything wood becomes better with lacquer or oil treatment

I'm kind of in the same boat.

I have an OM-1 which has sentimental value. It has a 50mm lens f1.8 and is it wise to invest glass on it? I believe it's lenses already isn't supported even by the Olympus MFT.
I'm planning to get a 28mm and a 100 or 135 mm focal length.
Are Olympus Zuiko lenses inferior to other lenses like Nikons?
>>
>>2871586
if the camera works for you and you like to use it, i dont know why you wouldn't buy glass for it. olympus om system lenses are pretty cheap right now and plenty of em are high quality with the exception of a few duds, just like canon and nikon glass of the same era.

So I want to buy a medium format camera.
I don't know if I should get a mamiya rb67, rz67, or something else. I'm looking to shoot portraits and landscape. Also, is there much difference between the rz67 pro and the pro II?

Would the A6000 with a 50mm f/1.8 OSS Prime Lens be a good buy? I'm not really familiar with lenses but I'm looking for an all purpose lens.
>>
>>2871618

50mm is a great all around lens, but it is a fixed focal length. A little long on FE maybe.

Might want a zoom instead. The pancake zoom is actually pretty good for what it is.

First post on this board. I'm having a baby soon and would like to buy a new camera so as to not rely on crappy cell phone.

When I take photos to list on ebay I use an older canon powershoot but the lack of view finder always angers me. but other than that I consider it pretty good. I dont care about portability.

Is there a decent camera that still has a viewfinder?

If someone can recommend a pretty good camera with a viewfinder I would appreciate it.

If there is a highend commonly available used model I would consider that also. I'm not spending more than $500.
>>

If you want great IQ in a small package, Fuji X20 has an optical VF and X30 has EVF, easily available under $500.

RZ 67II apparently has things like half shutter speeds, better compatibility with digital backs, two frame counters, and little nuances that you probably won't notice.

Also you probably already know it, but both the RB and RZ are Xbox levels of huge.

My girlfriend does a lot of hiking and I currently send her with my EOS M with an EFS 10-18mm IS STM lens and converter.

What would be a good "landscape" camera with a wide lens, compact size, and RAW capability? Super-extra-bonus points for a viewfinder.

What kind of protections do sensors have?

I hear MICL(and I assume DSLRs too) cameras have asheet of tough glass over the sensor. Is that true? How easy is it to fuck up that glass? Is it replacable?
>>
>>2871749
Yes there's a thin layer of coated glass to protect the sensor. If you scratched it while attempting to clean it, you probably just scratched the coating which is usually around a couple hundred to get replaced (Might be more; don't quote me). If you cracked the glass then there is a good chance that the sensor is fucked too and it's going to be expensive for that.

Hey, I'm going to japan in a couple days and I'm gonna go to akiba on day 1 to pick up a camera to use. I want something pretty portable. Is there any specific bit of kit I should look out for that tends to be a bargain? At the rate I'm probably getting a pentax Q7 for about ¥19,980 or 268 AUD based on the cash I just had changed, but I would like to spend less than that if possible and the camera is still decent. I really wanted a Lumix GM1 from the start but I'll probably just keep the GM5 as an aspirational for another time in order to save some travel money.
>>
>>2871752

>couple hundred

So not really worth replacing on a beginner model. Do surface scratches really degrade image quality?

I have a spec of dust/dirt/pollen/dried-jizz on mine I am pretty sure I could remove with a q-tip or something....
>>
>>2871760

You can most likely use a credit card in Akiba if you are buying new.

I'd recommend a Sony a6000/a5000 or Fuji XT1 actually.

The Q7 is little more than a point and shoot, it wont be much better than a cellphone.

It is ancient. Pretty solid camera though. Combined with the SELP1650 you have a great, compact vacation cam.

I woukd go for at least a NEX-5N so you can use the evf they have.

Sounds good. Glad I checked in here. I have a 2 week railpass so whatever I get will certainly be put to work.

>>2871777
Good plan
>>
>>2871781

Just keep in mind that the newer the body you buy, the faster the autofocus and the better th lowlight performance.

Sensor size is important too. APS-C is about thr smallest I would go. Micro four thirds just has way too much noise at even low iso.

Oh and if you buy used in Japan, the OS will most likely be Japanese. Somebodies have hacks that unlock other languages though (I know a7 series does for sure, dunno about the rest). I hope your日本語 is up to snuff.
>>
>>2871785

I've bought a Canon, 2 Nikons, and a Fuji in Japan and they were all easily set to English. If you buy it at a shop I'm sure the clerk will even set it to English for you if you grunt and gesture effectively enough.

In Akiba and other touristy places many of the electronics stores have at least one staff member who can speak English as well.

A lot of companies now sell a worldwide version and domestic.

Domestic is usually cheaper and only has Japanese as a language option.

How do you like using the bronica lenses? Are they any good on digital? In theory they should be sharp as hell because you're only using the very center of the lens. I've been thinking about adapting the auto bellows I have to a blackmagic Ursa mini and doing 4k macro cinematography with it.
>>
>>2872101
I don't really intend to use them seriously very much. They're all really long focal lengths and really slow. They're not necessarily that sharp either, they were made for 6x6 size and not really for the higher magnification of 35mm.

That said, they are actually pretty decently sharp. Obviously there's no vignetting and the sharpness is really even from edge to edge, too. Also, the way the Bronica lenses work means that just turning the aperture ring won't make the lens stop down, you have to use your thumb to hold down the DoF preview button on the lens while you take the photo.

The Sigma lenses are great. Pretty much every native Sony E-mount prime except for the 16mm is pretty good too.

I have the new FE 50mm ($200), good image quality but a little slow on the autofocus. I also have the FE 35mm and it is a fucking awesome lens. Sharp, quick, and compact. Only negative is it is only f 2.8. Quite expensive though ($600).

Oh, and look at adapters. The LA-EA2/LA-EA4 adapters are around $300, but with them you can adapt old minolta a-mount glass. That stuff is dirt cheap and quite fantastic quality. Some of their designs are still being produced today.

MC-11 and Metabones IV also let you adapt modern Canon lenses with full autofocus (close to native on a6300 or later body).

I'm getting to hate my Canon EOS 600d. I have the Canon 50mm f/1.4 usm lens plus the kit 18-55.

I will have the opportunity to switch that setup to a Nikon d300s with a 35-70mm f2.8 Af Nikkor zoom. As far as the specs go I'm loving the deal. I never shoot my kit lens anymore unless I need to take an indoors snap.
Old Canon lenses have noisy and shitfuck bad autofocus and the lens build quality is plastic.
Also with this set I can later go on to expand to a Nikon film camera and already have a lens that natively works on it ready in the shelf.

Should I do it /p/? I'm kinda psyched but I have a bad habit of doing bad decisions under hype and then regretting later
I guess it comes down to whether I want to continue shooting that heavenly f/2 aperture?

My most used lenses are 600 f/4 and 105 f/2.8

I stuck with DX for a good 6 years before FX, and in my opinion the advantages of crop factor are minimal, or nonexistent depending which sensor you're comparing it to. That said, I still use both. Mainly D7100 and D610.

Really though, my comment regarding D300 vs D700 is simply image quality. Back then, the ISO performance between DX and FX was pretty drastic and D300 vs D700 is a prime example.

Messing around with dofmaster.com. I'm trying to figure out which portrait lens has a shallower depth of field/better quality bokeh. 135mm f/2L has 0.19 ft under total depth of field. Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II has 0.29 ft. Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM has 0.44.

Does this mean the 135mm f2 > 85mm 1.2 > 85mm 1.8 in terms of shallowest depth of field/bokeh?
>>
What's the cheapest full frame DSLR?

Cheapest I've found so far is Canon EOS-1ds
>>
>>2872915
5D mk1 is around the same price if you wanted more options to choose from.
>>
>>2872913
Bokeh is a meme
Just pick the focal length you want and compare sample pictures if you want to analyze bokeh. Or just stand closer to your subject and put the background further away.
shallow dof is overrated, enjoy having nothing in focus.

>>2872915
Full frame means nothing if you get an ancient shittastic sensor with no DR and plenty of banding.

I can see a litttle bit of banding but for 2002 it's pretty freakin' good.
>>
>>2872923
I'd hope so. It was an 8000 dollar camera in 2002

Says the noob who shoots at f/16 because they don't know how to focus a lens manually

Thanks

We're talking d300s, not d300. Or are these essentially same?

>>2872788
I can't put any money into this atm but i'm looking for high quality 24-70 or 35-105 range glass. This deal would work great for me in terms of it. My local shop doesn't have so much canon glass atm.
Another thing is the film meme cause I will want a mechanical slr and this way i'll save on the glass and whatever I'll buy for either works natively on both.
Also old cheap (altho MF) glass.
>>
>>2872960
They're pretty similar, the D300s has primitive video but the sensors and electronics are mostly identical. For the price difference you could almost buy a new lens which is why I went with a regular 300.

Noob question...does the current Sigma art 35mm for dslrs will work on future Nikon mirrorless bodies?
>>
>>2873081
Yes, better than the current crop of Nikkors.

You fucking idiot.
>>
>>2873187
What?
>>
Is it worth to use VSCO camera presets?
>>
>>2873199
Use Google NIK instead. Free and chok full of templates and presets
>>
>>2873197
How is anybody supposed to know if
A) Nikon has no indication of creating a mirrorless camera that doesn't suck
B) Nikon has no indication of the specifications of such a camera mount
C) Sigma has no knowledge of such a mount or adapter
E) Third party AF lenses can be a crap shoot when adapted
D) There's nothing even remotely hinting to such a device

It's a dumb question and you should feel bad.

a7s without question. it does 1080p 50mbps in AVCHD which is a far batter codec than the a6000.

What should I look for when buying a used Bronica Zenza ETRS? Any specific components which are notorious for breaking down? Any tricks as to how to spot defects? Thanks in advance.
>>
>>2872751
yeah after more research this seems like the best option. im still not sure if i should wait and save up though. for an extra $1000 the 100-400 has a more versatile range, and a closer focusing distance if i wanted to also use it as a macro lens, which is very attractive. but the prime focuses quickly, doesn't extend awkwardly due to no zoom, is a lot lighter, and might be negligably sharper. if it could focus closer and i could also use it for macro stuff id probably just do the 400 prime... really tough. ill probably just wait it out though. just bought the 7dii so may be best not to blow my entire bank account... lol.
>>
>>2873270
If you go wildlife you will shoot the long end without exception. Go for the 400 prime.

Is this a good replacement for an 18-55 kit lens? It seems to be getting good reviews everywhere.
>>
>>2873314
Yes.
>>
>>2873314
NO.

I've actually had it and used it for about 5 years and can tell you it just didnt work well for me. after a year it lost the ability to AF. taught me to never buy a variable aperture lens. at the time i chose it over the 17-50 for the extra 20mm... trust me, it doesn't make much difference.

look into the sigma 18-35 1.8. you can find it for $700 grey market and it blows the 17-70 out of the water and its what i use now. if you think you'll miss the 50mm range then just get a nifty fifty. and for 70mm youshould have a 70-200 in your bag at some point down the line anyway.
>>
>>2873333
I already have a 35mm prime, I need a decent zoom. Haven't felt the need to go as long as 200mm yet but I want to do that down the line and shoot more wildlife and stuff.
>>
>>2873338
anything in the 17 to 70 range is more of a standard zoom range as opposed to a real "tele" range. if you intend to use the 17-70 for something like outdoors/nature stuff you'll be disappointed; just take it from me its not a very good lens.

if youre still set on it consider the 17-50 for the consistent aperture. you will thank yourself down the line. having used the 18-35, 17-50, and 17-70 id rank the 18-35 far above and beyond the other two options. the lack of focal range is far surpassed by its sharpness, AF accuracy, build quality and potential at 1.8.

if you want to do wildlife photography id just keep your 35 for general walkaround purposes, and save a little more for the tamron 70-200. very versatile lens you can use for some wildlife, as well as portraits and sports. depending on what you mean by wildlife you may want something even longer.

Hi, came from /tv/

I'm looking forward for a Camera to record live music street performance, with emphasis on sound quality.

So far I got in mind:

Zoom q4 or Sony HDR-MV1 (budget 300$)

Opinions?
What are your film making projects?

I hope I can attract some interesting women with my videos.

I'm 32 and wanna settle down.

go Canon 6D with a rode shotgun.

you could get a 50 F1.4 or a 35 F2.8 for a good price and would be able to profit if so
>>
>>2873378
This but with an 80D or 70D instead
>>
>>2873382
70D no, It has an issue with recording that can melt its sensor.
>>
>>2873264
It should say "Sq-a" in the description
>>
>>2873378
>6D
You just went full retard, anon. the 6D is the WORST choice for videos.

Very new to photography. Have a Nikon D3300. Is there a good combo wide angle/zoom lens that anybody would recommend? I got my camera with a deal. It came with the DX VR 18-55mm 1:3.5 - 5.6 GII ED and the DX VR 55-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 GII lenses.

I would love to be able to combine the wide angle of the first with the zoom of the second. Does such a lens exist? Any advice is appreciated.
>>
>>2873398
your next lens should either be a 50mm or 35mm prime. I'd go 35mm. Google local photography shots near you and pick up a used under 200
>>
>>2873398
plenty of those lenses exist, they're called superzooms. Tamron makes a 16-300 one.

They're not recommended because you have to give up optical quality to get increased zoom ratios. There's a reason why the expensive $2000 pro-level zooms rarely have more than a 3x zoom ratio.
>>
>>2873398
I just want to point out that "zoom" isn't the opposite of wide angle.
The opposite of wide angle is "telephoto" or "long".

"zoom" is the opposite of "prime".
>>
How come my canon 620 jams up when I try to shoot with my yongnuo 35mm? Is it possable the mirror hits the glass?
>>
>>2873394

explain me why?
>>
is pentax kx a good dslr for a beginner?
(yes i'm a poorfag)
>>
I know its the most basic of basic shit, but im looking into finally picking up a DSLR for the umpteenth time.

I know Rebel t5 is as basic as one can get but it tens to be where i keep landing.
1. is this a terrible idea?
2. most of my photos are Toys/closeup shit,
maybe not quite what you might consider macro though. Would the default lens be ok for this kind of thing? or do i NEED a macro lens?
>>
>>2873406
It's good, but you can probably find something newer (like a K-30 or K-50, which are the same camera with different styling, essentially) for not much more money.
>>
>>2873422
I realized that's a bit ambiguous. The K-30 and K-50 are essentially the same, and both are newer and better than the K-x.
>>
>>2873425
Thanks, which lens do you suggest? (I like street and landscape)
>>
>>2873429
The kit lens should be fine, maybe the DA 35/2.4 prime
>>
>>2873430
Thank you very much anon!

Been getting into photography and taking pics on borrowed gear.

I recently found out that my great-grandeparents took a lot of pics. Went digging and found a Nikon FE with 67mm Vivitar lens attached as well as a larger lens that I can't identify.

The Nikon has a little bit of corrosion in the battery that I think I can clean out.

My questions are:
How good is the FE? Is Vivitar alright for now or should I invest in a better lens?
>>
>>2873447
What does it say along the barrle of the lenses?
