I am a gringo, as one would say. No need to fear malaria most of the time the altitude is the perfect cure as there are no mosquitoes in the mountains. I speak somewhere between zero and almost no Spanish, didn't ruin my time at all. People are amazing, the mountains and the coast you can't really go wrong. I was there for three weeks could easily have been there for six weeks!

What do you want to do? The southwest has almost zero tourists, the Caribbean coast is more developed but only in certain areas.

Crime was no issue at all I felt safe all the time, one annoyance was one cab driver who tried to rip me off, he succeeded but in total it was like $4 so I didn't let that spoil my afternoon.
