You most certainly can be a photographer and not own a 'professional' camera. You most important part of photography is your artistic vision and knowledge of how to apply that vision. Cameras just make that slightly easier
Your phone camera will be just fine until you want to start controlling more aspects of the photo. Even then you can download camera apps that give you full manual exposure control.

If you're referring to the dead bird photo, it's probably because if the 1/15 shutter speed. The effect was not intentional.
