Nope and nope. This lens is sharp enough for landscapes, but you need to go wider (or to stitch). For portrait, it COULD be used, but it's not your best option.I wish to get a revised 50 and 85mm in the same league.

Not the best shot to exhibit this lens, but I like the 40mm f2.8 a lot. Makes wandering around with a DSLR bearable. A little tight on crop though, I would've gotten the 24mm if it were out at the time.

I love that lens. It's terrible but tiny, light, and not tiresome to have on the camera. It's small enough that it doesn't make carrying around my DSLR on casual outings vexing. People go on about how sharp it is but honestly it's unimpressive. That said for the price you can't really argue against it.

Maybe I'm just spoiled, the DA 35 still has some of the characteristics, a few grains of pixie dust left over from the limiteds.
Why bother with a 40 when you can go nifty-fifty? 50mm on FF is pretty much spot on for portraits, whereas 40mm is not wide enough to be practical for landscapes and too wide to be practical for taking portraits. It's basically in the middle of the most useful focal lengths.

On screen and scaled down perhaps, but not in print or 100%. I have the same problem on some of my lenses. I have one that is only good if I fill the frame and scale down to 1000px long side. It's not the aesthetic kind of softness.
