I'm looking to buy my first flash. I shoot using an entry level Nikon DSLR, and want to use the flash to fuck around with some low light situations (parties/concerts) as well as maybe some portraiture or studio-ish stuff. Also I'm a poor student. So basically looking for something that:

- Costs less than 100 euros (I don't mind buying used)
- Can be used off-camera (wireless or wired doesn't matter)
- Is intuitive to use for a beginner
- Will work well with my D5100
- BONUS: Has a rechargeable battery so I don't burn my money on buying batteries.

What does /p/ recommend? Used nikon SB-xxx or something cheap and chinese? I'm really lost here so any info is appreciated!

Alright, I do have a question:

I'm looking for a radio controlled flash kit - that is, a flash + a radio transmitter that connects to the PC socket on my lens.
I have no use for any sort of automatic TTL metering, because I'm gonna be using it on a manual film camera with an external flash meter, but the ability to control flash power from the transmitter module would be nice.
So far I've only found expensive TTL metered system flashes for Canon or Nikon. I'm looking for something simple and cheap - I'm perfectly ok with any noname chinese flash.
>>
>>2791207
You don't have to, but having no monopod or tripod with gimbal will get tiring quite quickly if your huge prime lens weighs a few kg on top of what your camera already weighs.

And on the longer tele range, you might just enjoy the stability, even vs what IS gives you.
>>
>>2791271
> to the PC socket on my lens
Can't you just use the ISO hotshoe instead? In which case, YN560 TX / III / IV.

I think there is a PC hotshoe trigger->ISO socket adapter thingie if you need it, too.

I really enjoy using mine.

It's big and clunky and kind of fugly but it's easy to use, no reliance on batteries and if you can get used to the fixed lens then it's a great medium format tool.

I've not yet devved my first rolls though, so no IQ pixel peeping soz.

Is it harder, easier, or the same to aim a camera on a tripod for birds
>>
>>2791326
what does 1/1 flash mean
>>
>>2791401
Depends on your setup.

A gimbal head can make a big and heavy telezoom lens with lens collar almost effortless to hold and aim - that wouldn't be the case with handheld shots, obviously.

A decent or better ball head also can make a long telezoom easier to aim at a distant landed bird.

On the other hand, some shitty $30 low-end pan-tilt head garbage bin tripod will basically only get in the way.
>>
>>2791402
It's the full power setting for the unit in question.
>>
>>2791404
... why the fuck don't you just call it 100% then like a normal person

why 1/1
>>
>>2791407
Because that's how it's labelled on that unit. Have you never used a flash that measured its power output in 1/2^x?
>>
>>2791407
Fractional notation is typical for photography.

Probably mostly a relic of the analog age, but it's not like anyone is in a hurry to change that, in most cases there's just no immediate need to.

It's also not like f-stops generally are more practical than AV, but we're still working with f-stops...

I am having fun with my new D750 and have purchased a 50mm f/1.8 to suppliment the 24-120 f/4 that came with it.

For my next lens I am trying to decide between a tele zoom or a wide angle. Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 and the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 to be precise.

With the tele I would pursue wildlife or sports photography, but honestly I think the wide angle would be much more fun and versatile.

What do?

Also, are there any third part lenses worth considering that would achieve these objectives for less money?

Would also consider a wide angle fast prime for $1,700 or less.

Thanks!
>>
>>2791321
Well for the price i paid i'm not complaining, it was like 150$ total.
>>2791330
Yes, i think it's a Type A or K. Seller actually let me chose DP-1 or DP-2 so i opted for 2.
>>
>>2791475
20/2.8 + 70-200, 80-20, 80-400, 200-500

2 primes and a telezoom is my setup.
>>
>>2791230

The D4, 1Dx, D750 of 5D Mk3 if you can afford it.

If your budget is lower I suggest a D7000. Or maybe even a Fuji.

>>2791242
Try looking at Yongnuo. For that price you could get the 530-TX and two 530-III. Really bright at full power and full radio control (and wireless powerlevel and zoom adjustment). Really decent for the money.

>>2791475
Depends what you are shooting. If you are making money off your gear then the 200-500 might be able to pull of some decent portraits.

If you are merely a hobbyist I think you will have MUCH more fun with the 14-24. Wide angle lenses are some of the most fun to use creatively in my opinion.
>>
>>2791475
here

>>2791516
If I get a wide I want it to be much lower than the 24 I already have with my 24-120. I don't really want to consider anything below 18.

>>2791517
I am hobbyist, there are so many shots where I wish I had a wider view. The tele would be nice, but with the wide angle I could just throw it on and go out and get weird.

Now, is there any benefit to just going with a fixed prime close to 14 or 18? The 2.8 on the 14-35 would probably suit my needs just fine.

If I got the wide, I would probably wait at least 6 months or a year before my next major lense upgrade, which would likely be a very fast telephoto and I wouldn't be as budget constrained (could shop for models in the 2000-6000 price range).

Thanks for the tips, both of you!

Im a fella who likes it around 35mm lens view

Ive ben using fudgy x100t since its release, and really happy with it, except the lack of weathersealing, and muh need for a little bit higher mpix. And yeah sometimes it feels too small to my hand, but generally I do like OvF.

I also have a nikon d800 which I despise ergonomics and dont use out of studio, and not heavyly invested in glass, so I was thinking of upgrading to xpro2, maybe with a 27mm pancake lens until a 23mm small lens is released (thats my jam).

Im wondering one thing though, anyone knows if fudgy implemented the half press shutter to lock focus, and snap away multiple times? or does the camera still tries to refocus after every half press?
>inb4 AE-L button focus
Im used to half press but oh well.

what do senpai? stay or go for it?

Also, Id love to hear about 27mm, does it feel too much tight or cramped for street photog?

You can lock the focus on burst mode without AE-L. You just have to not be using AF-C

You may prefer the 27mm compact, I like it more than the 23mm 1.4. I'd rather Fuji released a 27mm f2 compact instead of a 23 desu. As for street photog? It works fine for it. When you put the HVF to your eye, the 40mm will see roughly what you see, no need to walk backwards or forwards to frame up.

I hope you missed a zero. Otherwise, that budget is really destitute and your current smartphone is one of the best options.

Probably no, but it depends on what exactly you want to record.

>I have a roughly $250 budget
try to hunt down a 550D or an EOS M, plus get some vintage glass. Those cams will be good for both, install Magic Lantern and you're good to go. Not the lightest learning curve but by _far_ the most you can get for your money.

Or perhaps the next Sony or a price cut on the A7R II or whatever drops it. But sure, the 5D III will eventually become cheaper.

Depends on a lot of factors & nobody knows.

Get the camera you need now, and get an IV later if you need it then.
