If I am to comment more generally on all of your pics, I think you do the same "mistake" as most people who go to Japan on photo trips, namely that you aim to be too "etnographic". This is not necessarily a bad thing, but there are literally a few themes that are re-used by ever fucking photographer, namely:
>abundant focus on "traditional" architecture, despite it being pretty marginal in urban areas
>"old meets new"/"east meets west", illustrated either by traditional clothes combined with modern "western" architecture, or with modern "western" clothing combined with traditional architecture
>an underlying fascination for non-western people with a surprisingly "western" lifestyle
>always someone in kimono(you didn't do this one, though, and I give you credit for that)
Personally, I'm a bit tired of this exotist portrayal of different countries by many photographers, which is probably best illustrated by photos from Japan.

These all look really flat and unpolished. Almost like you shot raw, saw the super low contrast low saturation and just hit export. I saw you mention that you like the low contrast look, but as a viewer, they're really just coming across like you don't know how to finish your work. It's your work, obviously, so if this is your intent, I wouldn't venture to say you're wrong, but as the viewer, it's not coming across as "I like it this way". Visually, it's coming across as "I don't know what to do with my hands"
Your framing also seems pretty inconsistent and strange for a lot of them. Your "half rooftops half blank empty sky" and the random car in the middle of the road, for instance.

I'm not sure why it is but I think everything looks too "normal" when I edit it in a "correct" way, when I desaturate the colours I feel like it gives a more brittle sharp look to things, or perhaps it's just a style I'm trying to work out/through.
The random car I actually really like, namely for the snow and how atmospheric it feels to me, I understand if that's not your thing but I'm really aiming to catch atmosphere in a lot of my work.

To be completely candid this was my first holiday with a DSLR, and I'm 100% certain I made amateur mistakes but I'm also pretty happy with some of the shots I got. There were also a lot of stereotypical shots I did try to stay away from but sometimes you end up taking that shot anyway and it looks good and you can't help yourself.

I started shooting again in feb 2015 after a 5 year break. I used an EOS M which was "basic" too.
Never use the excuse of "i've been shooting for x time" and "my gear is y". Learn to use your gear.

This is a really odd shot. Shooting at ISO 400, f1.8 and 1/400. I don't know if you were trying to only get the foreground in focus, but with the man in the shot it really suffers from being shot so wide open. It could have been so much better if you'd stopped down. That's just my opinion tho.

Just a shot in the dark here, OP, but what's your monitor brightness set to?
A lot of these look like interesting photos to me, but I can barely see them. (>>2783851 and >>2783984 in particular, also >>2783879.)
Also, I'm down with unsaturated colors, but some of them could do with more contrast. I tried tweaking >>2783049, I think it works better this way but I guess that's in the eye of the beholder.

my monitor is usually on full brightness when I edit, I like things to be a little darker but I guess sometimes they're just too dark.
I actually like your edit a lot more, it has a lot more depth to it and seems to come out of the screen more.
Do you have any lightroom tips or youtube videos? I take some nice shots in my opinion but I really need to improve my post skills.
