It's a very nice lens and it's certainly fast enough. It might be longer than you want, though, especially if you're using a crop sensor, which you most likely are.

I got some pretty ok shots on a kit Canon 550D 18-55mm lens at F3.5
Lack of tripod messed it up, but the steady ones showed some good star exposure... you should be ok I think

It'll be fine, perhaps a bit narrow but 90% of the time you can step backwards so that's whatever. I figure just about every photographer should own a 50mm anyway
