i loaded a standard roll w/ 36 frames into my camera. after it wound the film it indicates 37 remaining exposures. did I improperly load the film? is the whole roll fucked now?

36 is only a conservative estimate. With the right camera and some practice, you can actually get a full 40 frames off one roll. Some cameras have sufficiently sophisticated film advance mechanisms that they can get an extra frame off every roll for you.

ah, alright. didn't know it worked like that. many thanks.

How to do that? The film advance lever can anymore advance past the "E".
My FM2 will shoot 38 with the manual advance, sometimes 37 with the motor drive, but usually 36.

Then your camera can't do it.

Load your film in the dark. The first three frames that you use to ensure that your camera is loaded correctly can be used without problem.
