Southern California has a million interesting places you dummy. San Diego balboa park is always packed with photo noobs. There are also the cliffs, the beach and hiking trails

X-T10 is pretty good for learning.
If you don't already know about exposure then you can take hundreds and thousands of pictures to learn using only the electronic shutter.
