So someone is willing to give me a 24mm pancake lens which will translate to 38.4mm lens on my 70D. I'm gonna try it out first, but what are your guys thoughts on it? I've only used a big telephoto lens up to now but I want to try out a smaller prime lens, and I'm interested in shooting more street-focused photography. My main concern is that 38mm is more wide-angle and will distort people's faces if I get too close (although I might try to go for that effect). But yeah, what are your thoughts/experience with this or similar lenses?
(Pic related - found it on a forum, they took it with the same lens)

If it's the Canon 24mm EF-S, it's a very solid and very sharp lens.
My most used lens is the voigtlander 25mm f4 on a Fuji XE1, which is equivalent.
Like anything near to true-normal, its a very versatile lens.
38mm is not wide enough that you should be deeply concerned about facial distortion.

Sometimes I forget I swapped cameras, oops :^)
>>2727688
Yep, it's the Canon EF-S 24mm
>>2727709
Pancake? I want to buy this one - as far as my research had gone, everyone praised it. I tried taking 24mm shots on my shitty kit lens and i think this angle is just perfect for wider, more 'general' street photos.
I can't say anything for sure since i haven't used this one yet, but it's next purchase on my 'satisfy-my-inner-consumer' list. Everyone praises it in every aspect except heavy vignetting on largest apertures.
>>2727712
Ha-ha, yeah, my 62 year old father, who's been a photographer all his life, calls it a "pancake lens." I think he got the first Pentax 40mm "pancake" lens a long time ago.
>>2727783
Dare, did Canon beat you up and take your lunch money?
>>2727787
*daww
>>2727783
Those are two different people my man
I'm OP, first one you quoted, I guess it sounds like I'm advertising it haha. But to be fair I didn't put it in the OP
I'm happy with it as a walkaround lens on my extra body when im out with the family. Shit for video because of focus by wire
>>2727684
Just bought this lens too. Should be delivered next week
>>2727684
I think every lens should be treated equally. If you think one is better than another, you are abelist and probably a bad photographer

i think you should get a lump of coal
>>2727698
>rubbed off the name
>>2728331
What name? Neither the X-Pro1 or Voigtlander 25mm f4 have text on their face. The Voigtlander 25mm f4 has its information written around the outside of its included hood, which I don't use (I like my big petals)
>>2728334
er, venteds, not petals. hurr. We're both retards. :^)

Holy hell, looks like you cut and pasted the guy into the photo.
my favorite.
even mr kockwell gave it his blessing

>>2727779
My similar aged father gave me his <3 It's a nice walkaround focal length & makes for a teeny setup.

I didn't mean it to seem like I'm complaining. It's just that my dad is very attached to the lens and I wouldn't want to take it if I wasn't going to use it much
>>2727698
Why did you change to from xe1 to xpro?
>>2727684
I shoot almost exclusively on 35mm equiv these days. It's really not going to give you that crazy wide-angle perspective you think it will unless you get right fucking up there in the person's face with it. I was used to shooting on a 50m equiv for a long time but once you get used to the wider field of view (takes a month of two) it starts working pretty well.
See example attached.

Better back screen, ovf compliments the focus method of the snapshot skopar nicely (it has a clicked focus ring)
Also I just like the way they look.
>>2728439
>Better back screen
I noticed this too when I switched to an X100S. The XPro's back screen was very noticeably better. It's actually the nicest I've used so far. It's a shame the EVF isn't up to par with the newer stuff.
>>2728439
Hi, I'm fairly new to this website and I'm just wondering. Why do you think you're so good. I mean I've seen your photos, they are fucking terrible, plus you're not great to look at. What's your deal? Who do you think you are?
>>2728449
Simply. Epic.
>>2728437
i love when people use the phrase "shoot exclusively X" as if they're a professional photographer.
>>2728471
How does that make someone sound professional?
>>2728442
Yeah, I didn't really *hate* the XE1s back screen, but after using the xpro the difference was noticeable enough that I never really used the XE1 anymore, and sold it off to a friend.
The minor EVF downgrade isn't too meaningful to me, as I use the OVF more than the EVF, and the backscreen more than both if you include tripod usage.
>>2728449
Bye, Felicia.
>>2728489
I don't know what Felica is, but with each passing moment my opinion on you only strengthens. I think you have some form of anti social personality disorder
>>2728489
>The minor EVF downgrade isn't too meaningful to me, as I use the OVF more than the EVF, and the backscreen more than both if you include tripod usage.
I had the opposite experience. I used the OVF on the XPro all the time with my 50/1.4f and loved it. Once moving to the newer EVF on the X100S I almost always use it now. I find myself shooting manual and using the EVF to judge exposure. It works really well for me. I'm excited to see what the XPro-2 offers.
To each their own.

I brought the Canon 24mm EF-S the other day, well worth the price.
>pic related, obviously
Very good pancake, decent and quite AF, lightweight and small.
Comfortable on my 550D

You can't filter somebody who samefags as anonymous and derails so many threads for their attention whore needs that even with the tripped posts filtered the whole topic is unreadable.
I ordered the 24 mm pancake lenses and it should be here by Wednesday. Can't wait to finally have a small light lens I can take travelling with
