So I'm making a website and for some reason I have a pretty big attachment to these set of images. I would love to include the set on my website but would like to get some opinions about it as a whole as well as the image order (which I think is very important). The basic concept is the passing of summer. The set will be named Dog Days. So yeah, comments/crit encouraged. If you think it sucks tell me why or don't bother commenting. If you think it works please tell me why so I can maybe use some of those reasons while making the other sets for my site. Cheers in advance.

Again, would really appreciate some thoughts on the series in general as well!

What's he holding? Is that a paintball gun or something? Almost looks like a powerdrill or a staplegun.

So, editing / curating your work is something extremely undervalued by most photographers. I put it as one of the top 3 most crucial things to learn from an arts program.

These go together,
>>2727428
>>2727429 horizon is bordering too close to center
>>2727431 same
>>2727442
>>2727446 love it, but feels unrelated to everything else

These go together,
>>2727435 photos of people's backs can be neat, but it's almost always just boring like this one
>>2727436
>>2727437 snooze
>>2727438
>>2727439
>>2727440
>>2727441 better of the two

These two don't work together with anything,
>>2727443 just looks bad
>>2727427 one of my favorites, grass is too dark though and goggles are very distracting

Some I like, most are just "meh" snapshots, they don't really evoke anything out of me and are the slightest bit memorable. All as a series seems too disjointed, really need to zero in on some common, easily identifyable theme for it to be cohesive, and ultimately work as a set. It's hard to do, but try to isolate your own attachement to these pictures. Consider yourself as an editor in charge of a story, and look at these photos again as though they came fresh from your photographer in the field. Does these photos tell a cohesive story, what is it? If these were submitted to you by your photographer, which would you use and which would pass on? If you need more material, what would tell the photographer get, where should they focus, what are they missing?

Use a better scan method.

These particular photos remind me a lot of a summer i spend in the pan handle of texas.

Some of the images do feel apart from the others. I personally like all of them but like Anon said . . learning to edit what you put out is a valuable skill you have to learn.

Wow, thanks for the critique anon! I totally agree that editing your work is extremely important. That's why I posted here to get other's opinions.

Your idea of pretending to be a photo editor that received this set as a submission is a great exercise. It is difficult to completely separate yourself from your own work but I think using your approach would be very beneficial for combating personal biases. I also think the image order can make a picture that in one instance feel out of place suddenly become an integral part of the series. The photo of my friend with the gun followed by the photo of the ghosted deer for instance.

These were scanned a long time ago om am 8400F and unfortunately the negatives are about 5000 miles away and will be for a long time. Next time I have a chance I plan on rescanning most of my negatives (holy fuck that will be a long process).

>>2727463
That's awesome to hear that they have a summer vibe to them. Thanks for the critique on which ones work for you!

>>2727448
It's just a piece of wood lol.

I have another set that I think is much stronger that I may post in this thread as well in a bit.

Although I prefer >>2727443 , I think >>2727446 follows on better from >>2727442 (moody grey clouds evolving into an electrical storm).

>>2727429 and >>2727427 are the only typically 'summer' shots (clear blue sky, swimming pool). The rest of them are cloudy or dark. Just something to keep in mind.
Also I'd swap those images over. The road would be a stronger opening image since it coordinates well with the 2 final images.

Are you the guy who took pic related? I feel like I've seen some of these pictures before

Thanks for the comments! Yeah I suppose this series more of a somber look at summer with a sunny start to a mostly gloomy middle and finale. I really appreciate your comments on image order and I had the same thought about opening with the road photo too!

And yeah I shot that photo. 95% of my stuff is 6x6. The photos of this set are from a period of time where I was really enjoying the simplicity of my Stylus Epic.
