>>
i dont.

By country. In that folder I have all the jpegs, a folder called RAW that contains all the raws, another folder called edits where the good raws are moved to and postprocessed, and lastly a folder called VIDEO for any recordings I've done which are few since I Dont care about video.

My USA folder is organized by State and then date of pics taken. I Dont leave NY/nj, but it helps keep organization

By date in my Lightroom catalog, but I'm going to change that to project name in 2016.

Chronologically, tags built into directory name.
/camera1 /camera2 etc are drives mounted via fstab, all read only except most recent one.
Symlinks (on left pane) for convenience only and point into most recent or most relevant drive.
/pub is for release
/del - technically flawed - severe misfocus, blinking, etc - eventually delete
/meh - keep, but not selected to publish
/not - sometimes replaces /meh and /del when photos are all failry flawed but i'm ok with that - parties and low light with drunkenness involved.
All /camera drives duplicated on identical drive and kept separately.
Backup with simple rsync script.

Why u no RAID5/6 or LVM? Linux is glorious at this, you don't need to manage all drives individually.

RAID is for no downtime - Not backup - RAID failures are a pain in the ass. Plus the backup drives that I only ever power up to *make* backups should theoretically greatly outlast the active ones in terms of mechanical failure. Making them more useful as backups.
Platform and software independence is my ideal situation. I don't want anything 'managing' my data. I do that.
Having everything minimalistically organised and backed up only when I feel it's appropriate keeps things as simple as possible.
Applications that catalogue everything, and generate their own database and subset of thumbnails are the Cancer, and I like to be able to switch OS, editor or whatever, without the filesystem being a mitigating factor.
Theres a lot of reasons. Mostly simplicity and total control.

>you don't need to manage all drives individually.
Oh, and I kind of do want to.
Drives that contain photos from years ago don't need to be loading the system, power bills, or wearing themselves out simply by being awake. Note the red X in camera1 and camera2 on the left of the screenie: I have several external USB3 4-bay enclosures. One is active and on all the time, I only turn the other one on to do backups or pull files from older drives.. or just manage juggling things between drives.

How do *you* manage, oh clearly superior human?
No really, answer OPs question. I'm curious how you think a chronological heirarchy is autistic or unusual.
>>2710851
It's just another abstraction layer I don't actually need and adds more complexity.
I probably could use it, but at this point I cbf undergoing to process of migration only to find out something i've forgotten about, something that put me off using it in the first place, is still an issue.
And again: LVM is mostly about a RAID mindset - no downtime and a resizeable virtual dataspace. Whereas I'm more interested in eggs and baskets.
That said i'll read up on it again as i get around to it. But for now the system I use is fairly ideal for my needs.

Folder by month, subfolder by day. Used to do group of days grouped by theme, which was good for my short travels, now I just leave them independently.
Keepers on the monthly root.
