Some of you actually go outside. Let's talk about the stuff you wear to keep cool, keep from dying of exposure, not look like a peeping Tom, or whatever.

After loving arc'tyrex (sp?), baffin, and Carhartt for my cold weather stuff, Sitka is really growing on me. UA's new ir line of thermals kickoffs ass too.

>>2708315
One thing I've had issue worry is finding good enough gloves where I can feel the buttons/controls while still not getting frostbite. Any recommendations there?
>>
>>2708315
I just dress like a normal person. If I'm shooting street then I try to dress sharp. If you dress well people are usually less perturbed and more receptive.

If I'm out in the country or just shooting architecture then usually sweatpants and a gilet.

Ellesse make some damn comfy sweatpants.
>>
Fair weather:

Jeans, hoodie, hiking boots. Always keep a few large garbage bags in my pack in case it rains. (I just throw one over myself and one over the lens and wait it out).

Wet weather:

Same, but raincoat.

Cold weather: Same, but winter hoodie and gloves.

I keep it simple.
>>
>>2708322
I gear up because I'm primarily shooting in the mountains and this is one place where you don't cheap out. Negative temperatures and negative double digit wind chill is no joke.

Out and about in the real world, I'm generally in t-shirt or hoodie and Carhartts (I'm out of a more rural area so that's the defacto normal guy dress).

Tried that...not warm enough. Right now, the best solution I've found is hunters mittens (pic related), but I kinda hate them...just don't like mittens.

I'm often in -20F weather, so yeah...

/out/ here

I recently purchased Hanes polyester fleece thermals and some proper wool socks. Cotton is the worst fabric to wear, not only for cold weather but for activewear in general (especially friction areas gloves and socks!).

You gotta go synthetic for its heat-retaining water-wicking properties, but don't go crazy expensive. I wore my wool socks and thermals /out/ camping last night and it got to freezing and rained raw in the morning and i was toasty as tits all night, even my toes. For a coat I have a Walls work jacket (it's a generic Carhartt but I love it). Over my underroos I just wore jeans on the outside. Make sure at least your base layer is synthetic and you're good to go. If you're really going to get wet you want to go full synthetic and get Frogg Toggs™ rain gear. Shit's amazing - totally waterproof but it breathes!

pic is my new shit when I got home from Sears and posted it on /out/

Yeah, that's the real killer to them. I'm lucky enough to have a hookup in the company so I have access to their factory rejects/employee discount which isn't as great as it sounds, but getting 25-30% off makes it far more affordable.

Meh, it doesn't get cold enough in Australia to warrant more than jeans and a basic jacket. It's summer, now - so it's all about wearing as little as possible whilst also avoiding sunburn and bareskin snake bites.

Merino all day erryday, hot or cold.

I buy a lot of my tops and base layers from I/O Merino. Just as good as Icebreaker but cheaper. Then a Merino or 100% wool jumper from any high street store and a windproof softshell over the top and you're good to go.

Legs I tend to just wear jeans, it doesn't matter if yer pipes are cold as long as your feet are warm. So, get in some merino socks and good boots.

If it's warm/hot, I just wear a super lightweight merino long sleeve top. You get 30spf sun protection and it wicks sweat away. Linen works well too.

You pretty much can't go wrong with any 100% natural material. Linen for hot and wool for cold. Cotton is heavy an soaks up water like a sponge. Cotton is pure evil.

Still not really impressed. Those were fairly shit reviews. With cold gear, you have to know exposure time and activity levelas well as temperature.
Like with UA IR glove liners plus a cheap set of mittens like above, sitting flat of my ass, I'm good at -20F windchill for about 4 hours before I have to use warmers. Note this isn't comfort, but functionality/frostbite prevention. I need at least double that (I spent 16 hours in -30F/-70 windchill last winter...and in it the entire time too, not out a bit, then back in). For that shoot, I ended up having to make a heater for a wireless remote and not pull my hands out unless I absolutely had to.

Likely what I want can't exist.

I usually have one of these with me if im doing long exposures at night. Keeps liquids hot for 6+ hours, and cant spill. You can even shake it to mix drinks in it.
>>
I wear mostly wool layers in the winter here. It usually doesn't get too cold, with the coldest being a little below 0F during the day for a week or two, so I'm pretty toasty.

In the summer I just wear linen.
>>

I'm currently using some musto sailing gloves.
they are thin, form hugging neoprene with polartec fleece inside. I got them from TK maxx, but can't seem to google the exact model I have at all.

According to my flatmate that goes sailing, ones like mine are pretty common. As an added bonus mine also have silvered fingertips for touchscreen use, i scotchguarded the gloves (apart from the silver bits) to waterproof them.
>>
>>2708416

Tell me which part of your photo isn't low class?
>>
>>2708792

The laptop.
>>
If you are engaging in a long trip and need something to stay absolutely hot or cold, then a thermos container will absolutely not fail you. I had this in the winter and summer, and it has served me well. This is only if you are going outside for a long time though. It will keep your drink warm or cold for more than 12 hours. That's the maximum I've left this closed so that is what I can testify too, but it might sustain it for longer.

If you guys can't find normal cold weather gear that will keep you warm, consider looking into some motorcycle or snowmobile cold weather gear with built in heating circuits. Carry a 5 lb battery with you, and it will last most of the day, and use a 50 amp 12v charger to recharge it.

My gear has kept me warm riding 2-3 hours at 70+ mph through sleet on a 30-something degree day.
>>
>>2708726
Sure the reviews aren't good enough to know how exactly these will perform, but they're clearly not as bad as >>2708691 might suggest.

Dunno if they're good enough for your needs, but you should be safe enough with them against frostbite.

"layers" isn't heppful without consideration to materials. this isn't 1825, and we're not talking sheer survival, we're talking 2015 and comfort and effectiveness in cold weather.

layers of typical cotton clothes is bad in the cold. you'll sweat while active and then freeze while station'ry. as a minimum, underlayers should be synthetic. in addition, it helps to have outer layers that insulate and breathe, such as Frogg Toggs Classic DriPore™ or Gore-Tex® or similar
>>
>>2709674
Picking the right materials goes without saying.
But it's not exactly hard, and you don't need special brands or specific items.

Like you said this isn't 1825.

Umm, you can freeze to death in 2015. Maybe even in 2016 as well. Especially in temps like some of these people are talking about.
>>
>>2709717
you missed my point entirely friendo. if *all* you're trying to do is survive in an emergency situation (car off the road, plane crash, etc) then anything will help - including random layers of whatever the fuck you can find.

however, if you're talking about non-survival situations where you have a choice about this and that, you can, in this day and age, make informed decisions about the most comfortable and effective clothing for your activity.
>>
>>2709707

Yeah, but you'll only need to buy one. Ever.

I used a Hasselblad 501C almost exclusively and a Nikon F100 for moving subjects.

I've seen your trip around, it got me curious.

How much does film cost you?

Do you like Australia?
>>
>>2709772
>How much does film cost you?
It costs me $36 to shoot a roll of Portra 400 (120) and have it developed and scanned. $3 per shot, with my Hasselblad. I could bring that price down a lot, but my lab offers me personal service. They remember my name and give me bottles of wine at Christmas, and shit.
>Do you like Australia?
I absolutely love it here.
>>
>>2709773

There seem to be a lot of your citizens that want "refugee" immigration.

>You wouldn't love it if you found out that we don't have to pay $36 for film and processing in America or Europe.
I don't overpay for film (I buy it from B&H in bulk, group orders) and I COULD get rolls developed for $3 each and scan it myself - but I don't want to. I like my lab.
>>2709775
>Do you ever deal with large format?
I've dabbled. I like being slowed down by film, but not that much.
>The politics seem to be moving too far left for my taste.
I don't necessarily love the politics or the people. Everything else is mint. Nothing makes me feel more alive than traversing the Australian outback in extreme heat avoiding being killed by the wildlife.
>>
>>2709783

Yeah, Australia does seem like a fun place besides the people and politics.

What kind of temperatures do you reach there?
What do you wear?
>>
>>2709787
>What kind of temperatures do you reach there?
It's 43C, today (109.4F). There's bushfires today, too. Towns are being evacuated. The hottest it has been in the last 12 months is about 115F.
>What do you wear?
If I'm in an isolated area I just wear shorts and shoes with lots of sunscreen. I add a t-shirt if there's people around.
>>
>>2709794

Not as hot as I thought.

I hate being out in the hot sun without a shirt.
The sweat just makes me slimy.

It might be better there since it's dry.
How does that offer you enough protection form the things that want to kill you?
>>
>>2709750

Jealous. Filson makes everything you've ever owned feel cheap and disposable.
>>
>>2709798
>Not as hot as I thought.
It's a different heat. So dry.
>How does that offer you enough protection form the things that want to kill you?
I see numerous eastern brown snakes every day during summer (extremely deadly). As with all of the wildlife here - if you show them respect and don't fuck with them, they won't fuck with you.
>>
>>2709801
>It's a different heat. So dry.

It sounds better than a Florida summer.
