explain your setup, is it a daypack?
>>
Op, get a metal drinking bottle they work better. Also what is in your first aid kit? I'd suggest expanding it a bit. I went into the woods thinking all would be fine with a basic kit and I broke my leg and I didn't have phone connection. So I had to crawl/walk out (took me what should of been a easy 4 hour hike over 18). Just saying more or less expand your bag a bit more and get some QuikClot that shit has saved my life a couple of times and also as stupid as it may sound bear spray if you dont have a firearm or cant own one (make sure its legal) and also a flare/smoke I wish I had one when I broke my leg because a rescue helicopter was called out for me but I couldn't signal it. ~Have Fun and Best of luck.
>>
>>747636
Yes it is a daypack.
For cutting i use small folding knife. Fiskars saw and sometimes hatchet.
For cooking and water i have usa canteen with cup set as water container and pot, stainless steel cup for brewing, gas burner, nonstick frying pan (under the gas tank in pic).
As usual some cordage, drybag for clothes, some "in case" food, coffe, tea.
I use pot grippers for pan, pot, cup - one of my favourite accesories (mine iss trangia aluminium).
I carry cheap headlight for now because day trips while a lot of work.
In small bags i have some tent pegs, ferro rod, chicken stock, med kit, foldable spade (use a lot for getting fishing bait).
Gloves for general in case.

Im a short distance hiker... More a fisherman than hiker. I tend to walk down like 5-10km down the river then make a camp but i know the local area and there are always shortcuts to civilization. Plus phone connection is everywhere for us... Its 2016!
We have no bears... Few wolves.... The worse it can be is wild boar or angry beaver... One specie of poisonous snakes only too. So that medkit is more than enough for carrying bandages (last time i used bandage was week ago to clean up after i took shit because i forgot any paper... Btw it worked great if you male it like 12 layers or something)
>>
>>747650
Camera? I carry what i need you carry what you need... I need a showel to dig up worms so i wouldnt have to fuck around with a stick for hour or buy them... I carry water yes... Kinda obvious

>Call it a night pack if you like but jjeez stop being like that nigger on alone s2 who left on first day after all his blahblah im a soldier shit

what the fuck are you talking about?

and sorry you're butt hurts when someone points out that you carry too much pointless shit. but it's okay-you get some actual experience /out/ instead of just playing dress up as bear grylls and you'll learn what you need and what you don't.
>>
>>747711
How the hell one who lives on the other side of the world, does totally different things when out, can say that i carry something i dont use?
>>
>>747680
Not OP, but emergency blanket weights nothing and it can save you. I also carry work gloves when I know I'm going to be working with wood and picking hot pots from the stove. I try to cook a proper meal when I'm out even for the day, it's part of the experience imo

>>747678
Have you look into tenkara rods? I'm thinking in getting a cheap chinese one to give it a try. They seem adequate if you are not in a lake.

because i'm not as big a fucking retard/useless newbie as you apparently are and i can look at that stack of absurdity and objectively say it's 95% useless garbage. unless, like i said, you're playing bear grylls or some dumbass youtube self proclaimed bushcraft expert, then it's perfect.
>>
>>747707

It's pretty new, used it 4 times. It's an 8 foot tenkara rod, so far my only complaint is the short reach and wind can be an issue. Otherwise it's nice and simple, great for small streams. Waiting for the snow to melt...
>>
>>747722
No... Never going to!
You can get a good 5# 4 piece rod reel and line and you will have a much better fishing experience for the same weight

My rods have seen some shit. Both are light carbon rods. Fly is 5#-6# and MJ is 1-9 gram. Gonna upgrade to 4 piece fly 2-3wt with tube case this season for my kit.
How is that rod compared to standart 8ft?

Yeah I was thinking in terms of portability. I've seen tenkara rods that pack very small, allmost pocket size, so it might be usefull.
>>
>>747696
Is that glass, the french press? How do you carry it. Im clumsy af, wouldn't dare to
>>
>>747680
I carry a saw mountain biking to clear deadfall on the trail. I can see bringing a stove fishing if you want some hot soup or coffee. I carry water when i go for a walk around town in the summer, never mind when I'll be hiking all day. Cordage is often handy for random things. Big packs are good, they hold more stuff for winter and weekends.

>>
>>747783
If you go out in harsh conditions and tend to leave your gear dirty and do not check on it then better buy cheaper rod... Fly rods are pretty easy to brake because they are so soft.... Even the ones that cost 2k.

This is the main compartment and side and front pouches +my fishing tackle pouch. I need to restock on warming pouches and clean clothes. I add my hatchet, more food and clothes, sleeping bag, rope, funs, and a pretty complete FAK depending on the weekend I have planned. I can post the rest if you all ate interested. It's pretty self explanatory.

Not everything is pictured and I might not bring everything in the picture based on circumstances, but this is my base stuff

Osprey Atmos 65 to carry it all in
Ascent sleeping bag that I badly need to replace
OR bivy. Would like a 2 man tent for more room to do stuff in but it's so small and only 2 lbs
Thermarest sleeping pad
Inflatable pillow
Poncho
Sawyer mini and however many water bags I feel like bringing
Petzl headlamp
Inflatable solar powered lamp thing
MSR stove and fuel can
GSI SS cup (nests over 1L nalgene not pictured)
Esee 6
Glock 19 sometimes
Mountain house meals for breakfasts and dinners
>>
>>748189
I love camping in a bivy, I mostly use the one I was issued for my Army sleep system, is the OR Bivy any good?

>>
>>748135
How you like that Ka bar for an /out/ knife? i think they are sexy as fuck but i hear they are generally pretty poor /out/ knives
>>
>>748241
Yes. It's basically like a teeny tiny one person tent though, rather than a traditional bivy sack. It's got a single pole that keeps the material off your face. The entrance has two zippers, one for the bug net and one to zip up the goretex material for rain. You should leave the entrance open (bug net closed) whenever possible because you will get condensation inside of it. Of course it comes with all the regular limitations of sleeping in a bivy, which is that you can't do anything inside it if you have to stay out of the rain, and you can't bring your gear in to keep it dry unless you're fairly short. Also kind of awkward getting in and out of. Parents call it the bear burrito.

But it's so small and lightweight that you can easily do 2 night solo trips with it out of a daypack.
>>
>>748387
I honestly only use it to clean branches and open coconuts, I carry a small pocket knife and a food prep/fish cleaning knife. It's a fighting knife, hopefully I'll never have to be in a knife fight...
>>
>>748387
If you only carry one knife, the Ka-Bar sucks shit. I carry a razor sharp buck knife for any use that requires some finesse, and keep my Ka-Bar for all sorts of awful tasks that would turn another knife into a useless chunk of steel. Fuckers are indestructible

I do wave them in the air at the end of a trip when my people and myself are most likely intoxicated around a fire playing loud music. They serve the same purpose as the slingshot and my tactical tomahawk, mostly fucking around.
There's this game called glow stick tag we play. Just hide in the dark woods and tag people by throwing and hitting them with the stick. When you are it you have the stick in sight. Simple drunken fun. Also signaling for help but that's secondary.

not sure if this is the right place to ask or discuss, but, I'm throwing together a bag to keep in my car. It's not really a full speed bugout bag(I'd be asking /k/ if it was), but it's a pack for those moments when you need to take off for several days all at once or for emergencies like.
>getting stranded on the road in bumbfuck noplace
>deciding to spontaneously get in the car, pick a direction and drive
>SUDDENLY, CAMPING TRIP!

what I got in it so far
1.) 2 sets of climate appropriate clothes for my region
2.) 1 set of cooler weather clothes
3.) 1 set rain gear(jacket and pants)
4.) 1 cold weather coat
5.) 1 hammock(waterproof material)
6.) 1 short machete/utility knife
7.) 1 compass
8.) 4 large trash bags
9.) ~~140 feet of 550 parachute cord
10.) 1 multi-tool (off brand leatherman)
11.) a re-usable fire-bug, box of strike anywhere matches, bag of lint and a fire-striker in several layers of ziplock bag
12.) 1 roll of duct tape
13.) 1 high efficiency flashlight(mini mag-lite with LED bulb downgrade)
14.) sealed container with $300 cash in $20s inside
15.) several handkercheifs
16.) 1 spare pair of shoes
17.) 1 small first aid kit
18.) basic soap, toothbrush, flavorless toothpaste, couple of razors

no pics right now, but I can post them later.

I was thinking of adding a handgun and a 50 rnd box of ammunition, a small pot, several collapsible water carriers, some long shelf life bug-spray and a filtration pump.
suggestions for additions?

is this the wrong board for this question since this bag is meant for non-outdoors stuff also, if it is, should I go to /k/ or /trv/?

Do americans buy gear just to take photos so they can brag about them but they don't actually use it? Serious question.

I've seen a lot a pics with gear that seems new and the people that posts them explain how they use it and whatever, but the things look as a tmblr edc carry pic errytime, wtf? Is it just me that gets my gear dirty af? I've seen pics of gaiters clean as baby wipes when mine are literally tainted by mud.
>>
>>749151
Are you actually trained to use all that? If so, than good job man...if not, you're a fucking retard.
>>
>>753080
This is just me, but I order new gear in waves. I buy new everything all at once then take a picture.
>>
>>753080
americans like the idea of doing something, buying all the stuff to do it, tell everyone they're gonna do it, take pictures of all the stuff to get kudos for appearing so adventurous, maybe go out once, and then spend the rest of their time online pretending to be experts
>>
>>753080
>Do americans buy gear and not actually use it?
Yes, it's called hoarding and winning the game of "Show me yours and I'll show you mine"
1 out of 20 actually use it and they won't be bothered photographing gear to show it off.
>>
>>749151
Way too much FA crap. Are you going to the front line?
>>
>>753249
I don't believe you. Nobody does that other than the 1st time you decide you're going to be a sc/out/ and have to fully gear up. Every other purchase will be determined by things wearing out, things breaking or not working the way you thought, or specific trip/location needs.
You are the one that photographs and I'm guessing never uses.

This is what I though until I went hiking with the gf in Alaska and her bad knee gave out at the top of a mountain we were climbing. Sucks when you're stuck walking down a mountain in the dark with nothing but a micro light and water.
Pic related is a few hours after a rock rolled down hill and smashed me in the leg while I was trying to help her down a steep part of the trail.

This is my first full packup with my new backpack. I got it specifically with field recording expeditions in mind, because it has support straps to keep things stacked, and lashing straps for my tripods. So much better than my last arrangement!

>not pictured: water bottle
>>
>>753080
Why do you assume the ones in the pictures you're referring to are Americans?

You're judging an entire country off of about 12 pictures you've seen on the internet that you think maybe are from Americans. There are millions of Americans who enjoy kayaking, hiking, camping, fishing, etc, and don't post a single detail of it online. The people who are gear whores are more likely to post about it online which is why you see a higher concentration of them in places like /out/.
Also

>>

the camera is represented by the camera bag on the left but really it's in my hands taking the photo. typically i wear the camera on a sling strap (also pictured to the left) and it doesn't go in my pack. at least for field recording trips. for actual hiking or urbex or whatever i'll sling it when using it and then pack it between

I got a starter kit because it was half off and basically only paid for the pack itself

What am I missing? I'm in the lookout for cookware but I'm not sure which brands are worth which amounts of money. Came with a netted hammock, tarp, and blanket. I've got a regular camping tent, but it's like 20 lbs.

looks like a breddy sweet deal! for cookware i like stanley stuff. it's lightweight stainless steel, and it's not expensive. for hiking/trekking i think stanley stuff is as good an option as anything. if you're rich you can get fantsy pance titanium modular systems and if you're too poor even for stanley grab some coleman/coghlan's steel or aluminum. if you're really dedicated to being an /out/ chef, or just car camping, go for cast iron!

>>

Stove is in that MSR stuff sack next to the fuel bottle.

Those are my trail running shoes. i like to have them for farting around camp, let my boots air out.

Map bag is in the truck, didn't feel like going to get it.

Le Guin Is a great scify author, this is a compilation of her short stories which was breddy gud actually. My favorite book of hers is The Dispossessed .

The folder is always in my pocket, and is good for cutting cordage, tape, twine, and that kind of stuff.

I like having a good sized fixed blade while /out/. It is good for prepping food, and i can hammer on the back of it with a rock if i had to for various purposes like splitting wood to make good kindling when it is wet weather.

I carry around a pair of crocs flip flops that I've had for about 8 years or so. Back when they were totally made from the rubber stuff and didn't have fake leather parts. They're super durable and weigh next to nothing. Clip them on to the outside of the pack and forget about them.

looks like a good design. it's aloominnyum which is fine but it says to only use alcohol fuel and no other kind. i think that' s a bit too limiting imo. stainless steel is a lot more versatile. for the same price i'd go with something stainless like the stanley

i've never heard of that before in my leiffe. i just read the description and out of the mere 5 bullet points they wrote to sell it, they were inclined to disclaim it's for alcohol fuel only. i assume they would have a compelling reason because that's only going to hurt sales.

Green: always carry

I do carry more food, typically about four days worth, Ive stayed innawoods 3 weeks with this kit with 7 days of mountain house.

Blue : Extra water/aid/fire/capacity and or transport

when I need to travel by road short distances(to and from town) or need extra water. Can be strapped to pack together also

Red: hunting/ shtf.

Can easily stay innawoods for months (game dependent) usually gets used on hunting trips 7-10 days. 200 rnds is plenty in case of disaster.

My rain jacket and colt Ar-15 arent pictured (dads on hunting trip) It takes the place of the 22 when needed.

This setup weighs between 15-30 pounds dependent on the firearms/climate/needs, not including worn clothing.

My winter setup is much bigger, weighs about 40 lbs.

I will be replacing some things with lighter alternatives.(sheet,lantern,tent,etc.)
If anybody wants names of certain things just ask. I'm open to suggestions aswell. The backpack is about 30 litres

that there's your Outdoor Productsâ„¢ "Quest" daypack. It's a Walmart brand. I've found it quite exceptional for $25 and it fits my gear and my needs perfectly. In my experience it's a pain in the dick to find though. And yep, the one I got is grey. They have Tacktickle Black, Army Men Green, College Grape, and Mediocre Grey. I had a choice between Army Men Green and Mediocre Grey so obviously I went with the grey. I'm 50% city boy and 50% /out/ so it was the right choice.

I know my scorpion tent takes up a fair amount of room, but I have no idea why my karimore 100ltr cant take more load. My rod and axe are strapped to the side, the rest go inside and, with foof and water, PACK it out. Fortunately summer is on the horizon because I have to make serious sacrifices for winter fleece liners etc.

Why would you carry a tent, a hammock and a tarp? Those two are bigger than your sleeping bag. Now how many people does that tent fit? Only those 4 items together take half of your pack size.

Cool pic, would you consider reuploading it reduced to 200kB or so? Cellphonepleb here.

Consider a DD travel bivi, its a waterproof bottom with netting on top, basically an inner tent. With a tarp its a complete tent. Also, its a hammock.

Could save space and weight.

what do you guys use axes for? i have never felt like i need an axe but it seems so common with people here
>>
>>772058
In the US the penis is cut. An axe, bear grylls gear and a oversized knife is compensation for that.
>>
>>772051
It's just something that is always included in a BG product, I just threw it in there simply because I have it and it's the only use I have for it.
>>772058
I don't always bring it and it's not a "must have" item, but I bring it because it's fun to
>chop firewood
>practice shelter building
>other bushcraft projects

of course you can go out there and be completely fine without an axe, but again, the idea of having a camping axe is not exactly a strange concept, a lot of people use them
>>
>>772058
Axes are only really useful for building stuff. Most people won't need one in their pack.

>>

They take a lot of space. What does a pair weight? I have a pair of classic Tevas, but the seem heavy with 700g the pair.

This inside a Eberlestock GS2 is my current set up. But I have a bunch other bags with other gear that I also use, but this has been my set up for the last few months. More bushcrafting than long hauls.

Oh hey, I have that one in pink. I wouldn't bring it unless you need to hammer tacks into walls wherever you're going.
