I need some new line for my bass and inshore rod. I've been using 12# mono but I'm not sure if to spool it with 15# or 20# or just respool it with mono. My only concern is that when the fish swims near bridge pilings braid doesn't have enough abrasion resistance. Has anyone ever been broken off when using braid?

Nth for fuck working I want to go fishing
>>
Went deep sea fishing for the first time this weekend.
Just a half day.
Won some cash for biggest fish on the boat.
Good size sand bass.
Not huge but apparently big enough to be the biggest on that trip.

Now I'm back at home wanting to go get some largemouth.
>>
>>726776
Where at? Was it a charter or something? If so, how much and was it worth it?
>>
>>726784
It was a charter out of San Diego.
I think the tickets were like 70-80 bucks but I didn't pay for mine.
I definitely think it was worth it and would gladly pay it.
But I think I'd rather shell out a little more for a 3/4 day and go for yellowtail.
The charter I was on was nice and the deckhands were really helpful and chill

Not yet personally

>I've only fished 2 times with braid, in open water

You're welcome for the shitty and irrelevant anecdote, anon.
>>
>>726763
Idk, braid seems to be decent in that aspect since it can get torn up a little and still have some strength left. Just gotta keep an eye on it and if it gets frayed, cut that portion off. SpiderWire seems to fray a little easier than PowerPro too.

Also, if you run 30lb braid, it will still be lighter than 12lb mono. And I think that extra strength will make up for any worries about the abraision resistance.
>>
>>726763
Ive been running 20 lb braid for about a year and a half now on one of my rods, after fixing a minor issue with wind knots and sorting out a few tangles everything has been good, I use monofilament leaders, usually 8 lb and have had no issues with braid breaking on me

You can get into the game for pretty cheap nowadays. Cabelas, redington, Allen, okuma (and more) all have decent options for gear. Line is the only one where there aren't any great discount options, but checking classifieds and forums can get you all your shit for cheap. I got a new in box float tube for $40 on a Facebook page this winter; a Spey reel for $50 on a forum page, etc. Second hand shit catches just as well as new for the most part.
And as long as you take care of your gear, it'll last a long ass time. This fish was caught last fall on my first fly reel, a cheap ass cabelas one that is 12+ years old

>it's not thar expensive
Final last words...

Gonna see if I can brave this rain and stop by the lake for a few. Was in Walmart earlier and grabbed 2 of those Booyah Pond Magic spinners in some neat color combos. One is black and red with one black spinner and one red spinner. The other is chartruese, green, and orange and has a chartruese blade and an orange blade. That black and yellow Pond Magic isnone of the few traditional spinners I really have any luck with.

I want those Cabela's lures to come too. Their shipping kinda sucks. $9 shipping for a few lures and they tell me expected delivery is like 8 days. I was gonna do Priority but it was close to $20 and still like 5-6 days. That $9 should be more than enough for 3 day postage in a package like that.
>>
Welp brought out my memecaster today and started throwing lures, I went for heavy as opposed to light and had my 20 lb braid snap on me 2 times (boh lutes were recovered by throwing another line and snagging the broken line
, guess I'm going to throw 55 lb on there, and if that shit breaks I give up on memecaster all together

Though a lure less than one ounce shouldn't be able to snap 20 lb braid, I'm wondering if there's something on the reel or eyelet that its catching on and weakening the line
>>
>>726885
Damn, that's a pretty fish my new namefag friend.

Seems like the rods are always pricey too, but I'm sure you can get a budget setup for <$100 these days. How much does the line and tippets normally run? And with fly setups, so most people just run one "medium" weight combo or do people normallt have a setup for panfish and another for bigger trout and then a heavy one?
>>
>>726892
Really?! There has to be a problem somewhere if you are breaking the line just casting <1oz lures. Is it breaking at the knot?
>>
>>726895
No it seems to be breaking at the reel, both times I got very small backlashes and that caused it ,
My guess is something sharp somewhere
>>
Why are there cricket crankbaits? Crickets don't dive underwater, do they?
>>
>>726892

Are you using a palomar or improved palomar knot? Stuff like clinch/improved clinch knots are notorious for slipping on braid...

For a new line you are looking at anywhere from $35 to $100 dollars, with most falling between $50-$75. It sounds expensive (because it is), but keep in mind that you won't be cutting or
breaking this line like you would mono; you'll instead be replacing the leader/tippet. A new fly line is more of an investment than a spool of trilene because it will last for seasons. As far as tippet and leaders go, you have more options. For my streamers I just use a short (3'-6') section of Maxima ultragreen, because that's all you really need. For dries and more delicate presentations, a tapered leader really does help. You can go to Walmart and get a 3 pack for 5 bucks, or you can go to orvis and spend $20 on one. Both catch fish, but when you're starting out you don't want to spend much on shit you're just going to be putting wind knots into anyway, so go cheap at first.
Here's more fish porn for a good question.
>>
>>726897
Yeah either the line is fucked or something is getting to it.

>>726898
I have a couple of those Rebel crickets and grasshoppers and I thought they were poppers.
>>
>>726900
I've never personally had a problem using improved clinch knots with 20 or 8lb braid.. But I can see how they could slip.

Have you seen some of the ultra expensive split cane rods? Fucking beautiful, pieces of art I recon.
>>
>>726894
Forgot the second half of your question. Some people have 30 setups, I have two. A 5wt for trout and smaller bass/panfish, and an 8wt for super windy days and bigger fish (salmon, steelhead, etc). If I wanted to go for big musky, stripers, Chinook, etc, I'd get a 10wt; if the biggest fish I encountered were little brookies or bluegill, I'd go with a 3wt. Just depends on how varied your fishing is. Most people can get away with one or two.
I also have a Spey rod, but that's a whole different can of worms.
>>
>>726930
Yeah, I'd be afraid to fish one of those. Get a scratch on it or break it and rage harder than you've ever raged before.

I had one largemouth jump off the hook right as I was tryin to land him. Saw that big fuckin snakehead that always chills in this one spot and had that smaller one follow my lure all the way to shore before he saw me and ran. Other than that a few things hangin on fo the tails of the Gulp baits but then I got rained out.

elvers nets, like the one in the picture are to capture baby american eel, that are making their first migration up the rivers to their homes.

american eels spawn in the ocean, most of them in the bahamas area, then head up the coast to live their lives out, returning to spawn in the midwest atlantic.

they are worth so much fucking money. and Maine has probably the best industry of it. You can't get a license now unless your immediate family has one the previous year, and even then you are entered into a lottery.

Last year some dude made 77k in one day. I'm not fucking joking here.

The season ends mid april, so I'll be seeing them a lot for the next few weeks. The nets suck though, they trap sea run brown trout, and the brookies that are moving back up the rivers.

Some fuckers up here will even net whole brooks and creeks so that nothing can pass.

Damn, that sucks. Is it legal for them to net across the whole stream? There has to be a better way go do it.

Also, are most of those eels consumed in the US or is it one of those things that gets shipped to Asia?

>>727009
Those shrimp, are those for squid or something? What's up with those things on the end of them? Only time I have seen something like that is those squid lures.
>>
>>727009
One more thing, what are those spring lookin deals on the bottom? Reminds me of the dough bait hooks for catfish but I don't see a hook. Also they are huge.

I also noticed in the first pic, on the bottom left, you have one of those jigheads with the blades. Those things are great.
>>
>>727018
The two (orange one and blue/white one) in the top photo are squid jigs yeah
>>
>>727022
The spring things are little burley cages I think, like I've said I don't really know what most of this stuff is for

I've never used those hooks, I assume the little guitar pick shaped thing would move around as it's being reeled in and flash, attracting the fish's attention or something like that?
>>
>>726914
Those stripers are pretty. I'm so jealous ha-ha.
>>727018
I think they can net anywhere within their county. Tbh I have no idea about the legalities.

It is shipped to Asia, its fucking tasty.

We eat American Eel up here when they are adults. They also make amazing striper bait. It's my favorite freshwater fish to eat.

They spin and flutter. I use them with those paddle tail minnows or with grubs a lot and they just draw some extra attention. I was using one today with some 2" Gulp curly tail minnows. You can see it in the pic here >>726946 execpt that was after I yanked it off a rock and then had to bend the hook back.
>>
>>727031
gut it, clean it, cut it into a few sections.
cook on bbq, or open flame.

use a little ol' bay on there, and char the skin.

watch it squirm as it cooks.

American Eels are an amazing creature. they can get to be absolutely massive, and their migration pattern is ridiculous. It's also a fish.
>>
>>727037
im waiting for trout season to open so i can fish a section of river a mile from my house, at night for ees and catfish
>>
>>726921
Bass tackle is okay but you might want a rod above 7ft for big rivers/lakes/bay fishing. Also if you're targeting bigger striper, you'll want at least 20lb mono to be safe. I just use 10 lb though.
>>
>>726921
I think you should film this fishing with your racist uncle and join the youtube sensation Mainebub.
>>
Are roostertail spinners ok?
>>
>>727116
Ehh, it's not a Mepps, but they work. A bit cheaper than Mepps or Blue Fox so I'm not so worried about tossing them when there are snags. Plus Bass Pro near me has a huge selection of colors.
>>
So I was fishing with the ultralight today and I hooked 3 fish and lost all of them. I was using a meps Agila. Maybe I need to go up a size? Pls halp.
>>
>>727116
The problem with them ive noticed is that they lack two beads that should be there. Dunno if its to cut cost or what. They work alright tho. The large bead bodys tend to be sorta fragile.

Could be. If you are getting them on for a second and then losing em it could be too small. When there are largemouth bass around, I like to do a #4.

I have good luck with Mepps and other inlines when it comes to that. They always hit the rear right on the hook and I normally don't even have to try and set it much. I lose way more fish on traditional spinnerbaits and soft plastics with a single hook and even sometimes cranks because the hooks can be kinda small in relation to the lure. But if you have 15"+ largemouth hitting a Mepps #1, it's easy just to catch them on the very edge of the lip and lose them sometimes. I have seen 5lb bass caught on 1/8oz inlines though so it is possible if you get the hook on a solid section of their mouth.

Pic related is a bluegill that hit a #3. The hook was definitely bigger than his mouth. No clue how I hooked him.

Adjust drag while landing the fish, tire him instead of reeling asap
>>727132
All the gas stations around Sebago carry these. I've caught a few fish on them. My first really nice land locked salmon was caught on one
>>
>>727132
Other problem without the bead on top is that the line can get caught up a little easier when casting or hitting weeds. I have actually had the tag from the knot get caught in the blade on Rooster Tails. It was less than 1/2" long and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't spinning until I saw that.
>>
>>727137
I think I have a couple #2s I'll try out tomorrow.

I wish it was easier to find larger Rooster Tails. I have a few 1/4oz ones, so like Agila #3 weight. But they have that goofy long weight on them.

Rooster Tail skirts aren't as nice as Mepps either. It makes a difference in how they look underwater. The Mepps skirts kinda pulse and look like they are swimming. That being said, the best Mepps skirts are the natural colored brown and grey ones. The colored skirts are made out of a different material and don't swim quite as well.

I'm excited to get those couple dressed Blue Foxes from Cabela's if they ever get here. I think I got a #2 and #4 both in this gold and orange "Shad" colorway.

In the end though, $2.50 Rooster Tail can do work if you don't want to spend $6.50 on a Mepps.
>>
>>727143
Just be careful with that sometimes. It can go both ways. If you think you got a good set and have the line strength to get him in quick, go for it. If you loosen the drag a lot and let the fish run around, it gives them more time to try to knock the hook loose. Kinda a catch-22. I have tried it both ways and you can get screwed either way.
>>
>>727145
>I wish it was easier to find larger Rooster Tails.
I know where I might be able to find them, a lot of guys troll sebago for togue with the large rooster tails.
>>
>>727149
>>727143
Just want to add whenever I set the drag real loose, it seems like I lose them when I get them close to shore. As soon as I get them on top of the weeds or close enough that they see me, that's when they like to take one last jump and I lose em.

I need to practice tiring them a little bit first when they are still a distance from shore and then landing them quick afterward.

Bass Pro sells a few 1/4oz Rooster Tails which is ok for bass. I could go a size larger. But they don't have nearly as many colors as the 1/8oz ones.

I'm sure I could probably find them online but I would rather just order sone Mepps #4 or #5 instead. I think #4 is my favorite size when 2-3lb largemouth are biting. They seem to hook up real well. I could probably go #5 but at that size the blade can start to scare away some fish that might otherwise have a go at it.

I always gotta ask, what do you carry your tackle in? It's never too late to get a nice Plano bag...
>>
>>727149
I'm saying change it dynamically.

have it tight, set the hook, then loosen it a bit, but not more than the reel can put line back on the spool. I'm constantly changing drag on my spin reels when fighting fish.

get used to using your reel without looking at it, once you master this adjusting your drag on the fly comes naturally.

I need to find a couple more with the chartruese blade and brown skirt, that was a cool combo. Just hate paying $9 shipping on 3 lures off the internet.

As mentioned earlier, can't wait for the dressed Vibrax to come in. Those snakeheads seem to love those things. That extra vibration gets em going.

Yeah I could definitely use a new tackle bag of some sort. Also thinking of a better memecast rod for the Curado I bought a little bit ago.
>>

Can't go wrong with either. I would just hate to buy a rod off the internet though unless you really check it out in-store somewhere first.

What is your current memecast rod? What species/techniques do you intend. That abu veritas casting rod is pretty sweet. Super lightweight.

I was previously thinking of getting a carbonlite for that reason. Now that I have the amazon credit I'm a little hesitant to spend cash though.

>>
>>727187

May also see if I can find some pike at some point, so maybe I would be better off with a medium heavy. I guess I'll always have my spinning gear if I want more fight out of smaller bass.

Go to pawn shops... Remember im the resident jew here. Avoid the pawn shops with durka durkas running them. Holy shit they always want basically what it cost new to buy the items. Junk peddling dicks. Unless your haggling game is strong. Sometimes it helps to go in. Look around maybe take a picture. Then come back 2 weeks later. And be like "brah i know this has been sitting here for 2 weeks. Ill give ya 15 bux for it" good for rods and reels if you're not too picky and don't need the ducati of the meme caster world..

Some of those Veritas rods are still on sale for $80 at Dick's as well. But that doesn't really help with the Amazon gift card. Veracity for $120.

Only thing is if you see stuff on sale or clearance at big retailers like Dick's, you will also get really good deals searching Amazon or eBay.

Dawn fishing is some of the best fishing.
Do it fgt.
>>
>>726894
Don't bother with anything that cheap; it's going to be garbage. For getting started relatively economically I'd recommend a RLS+ combo from Cabela's plus a better fly line (~$200), boots and waders from Frogg Toggs (~$100), a rubber net (~$25), a vest ($20), flies (~$120 for enough to last a good long while) and small bits (leaders/tippet/indicators/etc.; ~$50).

I mean, it's not CHEAP cheap but it's less than the cost of one NIB handgun, most of it will last for years (decades, even, if you treat it right) and if you cared about dropping money on your hobbies then by definition you wouldn't be a fisherman anyway.
>>
>>727277
>and if you cared about dropping money on your hobbies then by definition you wouldn't be a fisherman anyway.

Bullshit. I am the only <30 guy who fishes with a rod n reel around here. A lot of older people fish to survive and they do it with the cheapest gear that works for them. And they sell what they catch to buy food. (Fish is at a price, you can get way more cheaper food for selling some fish)

It was an interesting experience. The drag was essentially turned off and he still didn't fight much.

Love rooster tails.
For years, my go-to pattern was a blue-bodied 1/8oz RT with black hackle and a silver blade. It would work when NOTHING else did.
>>
>>727206
3" paddle tail would work just great, also kastmaster spoons are good. Between those two and whatever other baits you have, should be all you need.
>>
>>727420
Skid always tells me to get some Kastmasters, replace the treble hook with a baitholder hook, and run a paddle tail or grub behind that. You ever try that?

No but it sounds interesting. I'll give it a shot sometime.

I still really dislike ordering from Cabela's. I would never order from them with my own money unless it was a ridiculously discounted item or I absolutely couldn't find the product anywhere else.

>order a couple lures with that gift card a few months ago
>call and email them immediately afterwards just wanting to change the colors of one
>they don't help me one bit

>see this gift card
>order a couple lures at 4am on Monday morning
>$9 shipping on a tiny package
>8 days expected shipping
>finally send me a confusing shipping confirmation on Thursday

Their website is also much more difficult to use than Bass Pro's. Just a bunch of little things that make it more confusing and time consuming.

I definitely will try one day.
But as i said otherwise, there are no fly fishing waters around here that i know of.

>>727009
Everything that is circled, i would cast and test out to see if it will work. This will take loads of time and frustration. I also like experimenting so yeah.

So. The things circled in blue look to me like sea-friendly baits. (The two on the bottom pic i am unsure of) The two guys without hooks, you rig them with the hooks circled in green, but you probably need a larger size. They dont have to be fancy or anything. I just use lead jigheads.

The things marked in red i am not sure about, but i would definitely give them a try. Anything that looks like a slug, sandeel, or sandworm could possibly be killer.
You rig those as well with the jig head hook most commomly (Like the one in top left)
The two in purple we already went over, they are squid/cuttlefish jigs.

There is plenty of videos about squid jigging in Oz waters, so youtube that if yuore interested.

The double and triple curltail things are definitely a freshwater thing. Buw who knows, maybe they catch something in the sea too.

The spring looking things in the bottom pic are carp feeders. Those can be useful for bait fishing (hook and sinker). Im trying to jimmy something together for my own rig to give it a go.
>>
>>727451
I don't own a single one. I used to have a couple back in the day. I just never use spoons though.

Ever since Skid told me about changing the hooks and using a trailer, I have been meaning to grab a couple in different sizes and I always look at them for a minute but end up buying another X-Rap or something.
>>
>>727453
I have a bunch of those littke grubs with two tails. Not sure why. I think one of them I bought thinking they were regular curly tail grubs. They make good trailers on jigs or even just on a Texas rig. Looks like a crawdad or even a little frog.

Paddle tails and curly tail grubs a GOAT though. And in that top pic, those little yellow and white jigheads with the hair on them, I never quite figured out what those are supposed to be for. They always come with little panfish starter kits.
>>
>>727456
Yeah.
Id try anything though.
Also wondering why noone uses spinners for sea fish... kek
>>
>>727461
They use spoons for sea fish, which is kinda like a big spinner.

I bet spinners would work well though. The vibrations and flashes are supposed to imitate a school of baitfish. Seems like that would be good to attract saltwater predators.
>>
>>727456
>those little yellow and white jigheads with the hair on them, I never quite figured out what those are supposed to be for. They always come with little panfish starter kits.

Those are marabou jigs, and they are absolutely deadly for crappie when balanced under a small bobber.

On days with light breezes, the wave action acting on the bobber up on the surface makes the marabou twitch like crazy. Find the correct depth to place the jig and you can catch crappie like mad.
>>
>>727475
>balanced under a small bobber.
You aren't suppose to swim those...?

Welp. I've been doing it wrong lol
>>
Anybody know of any places for bank fishing in Fairfield county CT?
>>

I'm sure you can swim or jig them too. The bobber idea doesn't seem too bad as long as there is wind and waves and you can get some movement.

Where you at in Fairfield County? I'm in Ridgefield. My local spot is Lake Mamanasco, I've heard good things about Squantz Pond for Walleye. Also there's the Norwalk River which is well stocked with trout.
>>
How should I work a small, live bluegill if I'm going for bass?
Should I have the weight below the bait and have the blue gill slightly off the bottom?
Can I just let it sit and have the blue gill do the work or should I twitch/swim him?
>>
Anon with that blue kastking braided line. Just reporting that it seems to work great, and at $35 for 500m this may be my new go to.
>>
>>727534
You hooking it through the mouth or back? I would always just do shiners through the back and hang em off a bobber like a nightcrawler. Unless it's in a river like a walleye rig.
>>
>>727542
Did you get the 4 or 8 carrier stuff? I'm thinking about a 20lb spool.
>>
>>727542
That doesn't seem like a crazy cheap price so I wouldn't expect it to be shitty. Hopefully it will hold up well over a year or two.

I keep seeing so many new brands of braid popping up and they seem ok but I don't think I would ever cheap out on line. And even with the cost of PowerPro, it should last for years and when you compare it to the price of other lines and the frustration that can be prevented, it is totally worth it.

I gotta get out to the lake in a few minutes. Hopefully they are biting. I wish that Cabela's shit shipped faster so I would have a chance to play with it while I'm still on vacation.
>>
>>727555

I could never be one of those UL campers. I really want to get some use out of that bigger President combo with 30lb braid on it. The rod is kinda heavy so I think it would be good for jigging. And that 5' Sienna and Ugly Stik combo I still haven't used since I strung it with 6lb.

2 holes it might rotate, 4 holes its fixed.
4 holes on top 4 on bottom. Tie with zipties or some sort of thin rope.
Slight caveat tho: need to modify backpack with possibility of damage if its shit tier.

>>
>>727600

>>
>>726903
I've got a 7wt combo that the clicker and drag is about to go out (I opened the reel and its literally a spring and a toggle with the tip wearing off rivited in place so once Its dead it's dead) that I found in the shed and a 5wt that survived in the shed since I lost interest at 12 so yeah.
My goals are to get hella into it and have 4 set ups
A 3wt with floating line
A 6wt with two spools- sink tip and gull float
An 8 or 9 wt for bigger fish and wind (basically just a better reel on what I've got)
And then either a spey for the steelhead or maybe something like a 14 wt for salt that's still up in the air as to If it will happen or not
>>
>>727601
That, or a small wooden or plastic plate on the inside of the backpack could also work.
I'd actually reccomend this.
>>
>>727421
Personally I prefer something like a split tail fluke of the appropriate size, the spoon gives it hella action

They also work with Swedish pimples if the kastmaster is making too much action.
And as for tipping the j hook the spoon should be about half the oal of the presentation.
On the little ones I'd use a 1 inch or smaller something (the one has a cut off nailtail, those kill, look around for them)
The next one I'd put on the butt end of a fluke about 2 inches long, and 2.5-3 inches on the bigger one
The whole point is that it's swaying out in the middle and looks like a swimming fish. Same concept as a jointed rapala

Damn this lake is annoying today. I know there are some sneks, Mayans, and probably largemouth in an hour or two. And this whole side of the lake has a pretty dense weed bed starting like 10' out and going to 25' out. Plus some lillies.

Problem is I want to run a Mepps or Blue Fox and I can normally kinda see the weeds and just run it really fast over the top of them. But between the rain the past couple days and the sun setting across the lake, I can't see shit. So I'm trying one of those 1/8oz jigheads with a spinner and PowerBait curly tail grub.

Saw a couple gar too but they rarely bite lures.

If so, you ever have work with topwater stuff? Spinners seem to be the only thing I ever catch them on, but it's not gonna happen with this cover. I have been tossing a weedless rigged 4" curly tail worm and no luck. A weedless frog would be the easiest thing to get through that cover, maybe a popper if I stay away from lillies. But I have never had a snakehead hit anything topwater.

Fishing Forecast: March 31, 2016
Bunker and small baitfish have been stacking up along the back bays and inland waters, keeping holdover striped bass at the center of attention. Anglers from Rhode Island to New Jersey are dusting off their saltwater gear and hoping for a few warm days to fire up the spring fishing.

Spring trout stocking is off to a terrific start, with trout season opening up in just about every state in the Northeast over the next two weeks. Largemouth bass continue to bite well as they fatten up for the spawn.

And I think I actually had one of those Excursion reels on an ultralight I gave to my brother. They have the little wood handles, right? But there are a handful of decent reels for right around $30. I'm just saying the Uglt Stik combos are normally $50. For $60 or $70, you can get a combo from Bass Pro or wherever with a $40-$50 reel and it will probably be on a rod of comprable quality/price to an Ugly Stik. I have been seeing some nice Pflueger/Fenwick combos in all different price ranges, lots of them are <$100.

I'll take pics in a minute. It's not anything nice. I remember it being some combo I bought fron Dick's or whatever years ago to have something I could run 12lb mono on and go for big carp. It has the rear drag and is probably a 3500-4000 size.
>>
>>727751
In a civilised society there must be a distinction.
A pole is a long bamboo or composite tapered blank where the line is affixed to the tip
A rod has guides and a spool fixed to the blank holding the line
>>
>>727771
What's the line capacity

On the Quantum? No clue. I guess it's supposed to be a "30" but it is definitely a little larger than most 3000 size reels. It would be a good 10-14lb reel. I bought it specifically to run 12lb mono.

Low ish ? I don't know baitcasters , it really is nice for the age and seems very well kept
>>727769
Il take it appart right now, though may or may not send it to you, it's an alright reel and I would like to get it working again
>>
>>727767
Sexy as fuck. Lmk if you're ever selling it.
>>
>>727781
>>727776
Actually, looking at it a lil more, it looks like the rear drag makes it seem a little larger. But probably something around 10/160.
>>
>>727785
Make an offer, I probably won't ever use it , it's clean as fuck too
>>
>>727781
Spool it with 30 pound braid and make a salt combo.
>>
>>727784
That's cool. I was wondering if it was a round reel like current Ambassadeurs but looks more like an early baitcaster like we use now. Does the thing work well? That would be cool to use just for nostalgia.

different assembly it seems. It's virtually the same reel though which is weird. oh well, thanks for popping that open and sending the pics. the hunt continues.
>>
>>727789
I'm straight. I already have one of those Ugly Stik combos, the heavier one, and that has 40lb braid on it to use as at the pier. And this President I'm about to add line to would probably be ok for salt as well. 6'6" Med-Heavy rod with 30lb braid. If I ever start fishing salt more and want another heavier one, I'm going to grab one of those Penn combos they always have a million of at Bass Pro for $100-$200.
>>
>>727790
Works quite well, spool spins flawlessly line winder works pretty perfectly , spool tensioner works, haven't been able to figure out how the braking system works
It actually feels really nice in my hand
Flipping switch switch works well
>>727793
All good I'm trying to figure out why the fuck the drag system isn't working , it tightens and loosens but no clicking and it loosens much faster now
>>

Did you ever email Okuma or anything? Did you find the schematics? If you could find a part number, it probably wouldn't be too hard finding the part somewhere.

yeah emailed them twice. no response what-so-ever. their website is absolute shit.

yeah the schematics don't exist online. I've even contacted a few specialty reel shops, all responding that they were unable to locate a schematic for the reel. I love the reel and I want to use it again.

How much was that reel? The handle and a couple things look exactly like my Stratus. If it is the same, maybe you can find one of those for cheap and use it for parts. They only cost $40 new and go on sale a bit for $30.

I'm down wit Abu. But I don't really have a preference. I want another Shimano in the future. Like half of the major companies are all Pure Fishing and they have all been good to me. I just like that Abu has been around forever and I know if I ever need a part or service, they will always be there. I wouldn't be opposed to another Pflueger either.

Recommend me a spinning saltwater setup for striper?
>>
>>727604
Fuckin get it, gurl. My only saltwater fly fishing was for sea run cutthroat and some salmon; a 14wt would open up a lot of interesting shit. The Spey rod for steelhead is fun, but the learning curve is steep as hell. I might hold off on that until you have regular fly casting down pat.
>>
>>727858
I don't know about striper but you can't go wrong with a penn spinfisher V.
>>
>>727858
What he said >>727861

Those things look nice. Otherwise the Penn Fierce and Battle combos are supposed to be nice as well but are a bit more affordable.

Mainebub still around? You want me to open up that Okuma?
>>
>>727626
Zebco 33 combo
New spool of 10lb test line
A bunch of smallish bobbers, sinkers and hooks
A bunch of worms, crickets, or cut up
baitfish like Shad
A small 1 or 2 tray tackle box to put your line and stuff in
A pair of needle nose pliers
All of that stuff should run you $60 or so, less if you already have some stuff like the pliers around. The Zebco combo runs about $35 and it's great to get you fishing no matter what the snobs think.

Learn to put bait on a hook, how many sinkers it takes to balance your preferred size of bobber, and then go out to a pond and fish.

It doesn't need to be either complicated or expensive.
Just go do it, and remember that despite all the talk about lures here, nothing is more effective than real live bait.
There were many times when I went fishing with my little brother and he outcaught me because he was using live bait and I wasn't because I thought I was too "sophisticated" for that kind of kid stuff.
Don't be too sophisticated. If it's dumb but it works, it's not dumb at all.
>>
>>727823
small piece of plastic that compresses the spring for the bail. I can take a photo and draw the missing piece out when I'm home.

>>727858
good entry level is the Baitrunner 6000 OC for 150$ or less it's a great all around striper reel, good for surf casting plugs, or chunking bait, or live lining bait fish.

Otherwise Spinfisher, Stradic, Zeebass, vanStaal, I don't know what to recommend for Okuma, or Diawa but I do know they make really nice reels. Diawa makes a really nice 6k series but I can't recall what it's called.

When you just want a single pole, A small tackle box and a small assortment of tackle and lures to do pond fishing, you bet $300 is a lot.
It's when you start becoming an enthusiast and wanting to do surf fishing, then fly fishing, memecasting, crankbaits, inline spinners, soft plastics, and all the rest that $300 turns into "not that much money". But for doing just one thing in one or two specific places it doesn't have to cost much at all.
>>
>>727877

Pepsi you ever take the rotor off that thing? I cannot seem to get that friggen rotor nut off for the life of me.
>>
>>727879
Heh, I guess. But idk, a halfway decent rod and reel plus line is getting close to $100. Tackle bag is another $30-$50 unless you go full blown $100 bag. Terminal tackle will end up at $50 soon enough once you start getting baitholder hooks and bullet weights. So that last $100-$150 can go real fast in lures.

I mean it all depends how quick you get into it. You could honestly start with $100 and get all the bobbers and weights you need for fishing with worms. But if you start messing with lures, that $300 will be gone really quick.

I fucking hate the knife threads. That's why I had to yell at Yuro for making a new fishing thread before the bump limit. Any other board and everybody would talk shit. Thread #16 is on Page 2 with 240 replies and they make a new one. And it is the same OP.

The Okuma? I think I had it off the other day to oil it.

Just remember some reels, that rotor nut is reverse-threaded. Can't remember which way the Okuma goes.

The plastic bit sits directly below the bail pivot screw, sitting on the bail spring. It then moves with the bail to compress the spring.
>>

I gotta make a decision soon, should I upgrade to the Pro MTB this month?

I also have to remember to cancel the subscription. It's cool, but I don't think I want to keep it. And they will automatically bill me another $45 if I don't cancel it. I need to see when I have to do that by. I'm sure they will bill me again as soon as they ship the April box.
>>
>>727842
>>727906
What does it even mean "Conventional"? Like the big, round casting reels?
>>
>>727874
>>727876
Because it doesn't matter to the fish as long as you can get the bait to their mouths. And beginners can do that with a spincaster.
There are many worse things in the world than a thing that is easy as fuck to learn on and gets you out doing shit for not a lot of cash.
If you have never been fishing before and need something dead simple, don't discount it. It gets you fishing that day, and that's a wonderful thing.

>>727917
I guess. But I don't think a spinning reel is a huge learning curve at all. I have taught a bunch of people how to fish on spinning reels and they have never had an issue. Plus I can't take somebody with a spincast reel seriously. And why even waste the money on a spincast? If they stick with it, they will be buying a spinning combo within weeks. And you can't even use the spincast rod for a spinning reel.
>>
>>727900
No his has 2 bars, one that applies tention to the bar to snap it shut, and the other one that starts that when you turn the crank, it looks to me like you need something that feeds from the spring to the notch in the part of the bail

Yours has the one thay starts the process when the crank is turned but it appears to be missing something yo help the bail snap shut , be it a piece of plastic or a little metal bar

look in the 35 at the top of the spring there is a small metal bar that connects the spring to the bai, on yours it may have been a piece of plastic but im sure you could replace it with a small piece of stiff metal wire see pic related, they are pretty much the same

>>727946
