Knife General 16 thread seems to have stalled. Figured I'd take the liberty of making a new one.
Anybody know where to buy a good Kukri w/ the Chukmuk and Karda included? I'm looking for a tool that could live as a general camp knife for 10 or so years or work as a survival knife.
Pic related is the knife I'm ordering after this summer season
Will pay about 13£ more for the "hand forged blade" custom option
>>724465
That is a very pretty knife; brand/model?
>>724477
It's a KP-Tommi Puukko, here's the site:
http://www.kainuunpuukko.com/
You can read all about the make there
>>724477
Model is the Teho Tommi, or "Power" Tommi
>>724447
Which way are you supposed to swing a kukri?
>>724523
I don't think it's like that for regular models, but look under "Traditional Tommi" and you'll see Double and Triple Tommi models, ie multiple different sized puukkos in one sheath with several pockets
>>724523
if i'm looking at the same thing as you then that's just the wood insert that puukko's tend to have
>>724531
Sharp end out?
Thinking of getting a custom Benchmade Griptillian. What blade shape and steel would be best for /out/ uses if I wound up stuck /out/ with no other knife? I have the option of Drop-point, Sheepsfoot, Tanto blades using 154CM, D2, N680, or S30V steels.Ideally I'd like Stainless but I'm not opposed to other steels if you can justify why it would be better.
>>724738
What is the price difference between a custom from them versus one off the shelf? Assuming you use similar metals and features just in a combo you prefer. Also what is the wait time?
>>724465
I like those. Kinda reminds me of those Opinels. Would be a nice classy looking fishin knife or even EDC as long as it isn't too large and the sheath is comfy.
>>724738
i have a sheepsfoot(mini grip) in 154 cm, i personaly am a fan of 154 cm , its easy enough to resharpen, and takes a nice edge,v
>>724738
What do you want to cut? Of you cut a lot of abrasive stuff I would get d2 or s30v
Intended use will also dictate which blade shape is better
>>724745
Off the top of my head I believe the wait-time was two weeks but I'm not sure and having trouble finding the portion of the website where I believe I read that. I believe the different in price depended on the knife but for the Barrage I see a difference of $55.00 with pic related. Price does not increase when I add or subtract a pocket clip (it does come with the pocket clip but I removed it to see what the knife would look like without).
>>724795
I'm thinking of an EDC blade that would be able to do a large sum of /out/ tasks if I wound up stranded in a forest somewhere. Minimal bushcraft tasks, something I could get lash the end of the stick to act as a spear for hunting and then use for skinning game. I know a fixed blade is better but given I often am around my young nephew and other family I don't think I should.
I like my Cold Steel Kukri. Best $0.49 I ever spent.
>>724812
So you want to throw away money on a knife that primarily is used for edc but should be optimized as a makeshift spear and bushcraft/hunting knife, just in case you randomly wound up stuck out innawoods?
Looking to get my first bushcraft knife.
Any good value knives so I don't have to worry too much about fucking up the knife?
>>724812
if you are getting a knife you may have to abuse i would go with the barrage, while i havent personally tested the axis lock on my 2 benchmades i always feel like a hard smack on the back of the blade could make the lock fail, the barrage ( spring assisted version) happens to have a secondary lock that prevents the axis lock from being moves, locking the locking mechanisim closed i think of it as a second saftey mechanisim
>>724837
Mora
>>724837
Start out with a Morakniv or an Opinel; Moraknivs will be my recommendation because you can easily buy them in bulk ( sets of 15 if memory serves me right ) that you won't need to feel bad about breaking. Breaking a knife is something that is more possible than you might think so I wouldn't spend a lot of money on your first knife(s). If you find you like the products Morakniv makes then feel free to pick up one of their higher-priced knives ( like the soon-to-be-released Garberg ) but I'd continue trying out other low-cost products from other companies just to get a feel of what you like/dislike in knives. Once you do that I'd go and buy a more expensive, better quality product from a company like Benchmade, Buck, First Edge ( which seems to have outstanding fixed-blades but sketchy folders ) along with the earlier-mentioned KP-Tommi Puukko blades ( >>724486 ) and other names you will eventually come across here on /out/ and /k/.
Also, I had just gone to Buck's website to get pic related for another thread and they mentioned that registering with them would get you 20% off on your first order. On top of that Buck knives are some of the best "bang for your buck" high quality knives you'll can currently buy so if, for some reason, you have your heart set on a mid-priced ( $80-$250 ) high-quality blade you may want to give them a looksie.
>>724447
Himalayan Imports or Tora Blades. Tora are pretty sweet, but they generally don't include a chakmak/karda, and their waiting times are long.
I have a HI myself.
>>724837
>>724859
I forgot to mention something: Do not buy the Hoodlum from Buck. While it is a decent knife it DOES NOT hold up to abuse; it has a notch in the back of the blade for taking hot pots off a fire/marrow getting but that notch also weakens the blade at that point. The blades have been known to break at that notch which means it is not a good knife for a beginner or anybody who is rough on their knives. Pic related

>>724861
Is Khukuri House reputable? My dad has mentioned he wants a khukuri so I was thinking of picking one of their "unfinished" ones up and doing some sort of name engraving or etching on the blade as a present.

4.25" blade
9" total
Nice looking blade and decently priced
Anyone ever hear of triple x knives?
Also what is L6 steel? Looked it up and seems to be a very good steel. Might have found my next knife
>>724447
I have this same exact knife. Same one. with case and those little blade sharpeners. Was my Grandfathers. Got it when he was in the military. Where from I don't know, but he was in the Korean War.
>>725353
L6 is what Svord use almost exclusively from memory, pretty tough steel, probably superior to 5160 and 1075. Was originally used for power hacksaws but they're almost extinct now.
>>725359
Well they were used in both world wars by multiple nations, are still used by some army(ies) and are commonly used as a farming or ritual tool. The blade isn't uncommon.

>>724738
How much value do you place on corrosion resistance, toughness and ease of sharpening vs wear resistance?
Any good sharpening tutorials?
Everybody seems to have a different idea.
>>725388
Huh okay. I was looking at a few of their knives and they all use uncommon weird steels based on their properties. I was gonna get a benchmade bushcrafter but I can't justify the price right now so I'm exploring other less known brands. Not sure where else to look though
I'm just terrified of getting something that I will misuse but I don't want another cheap Gerber. Wasn't fun when the blade snapped and I had to field dress myself cause no one else knew first aid haha
It's pretty cool seeing all the different smelting properties of the different steels
>>724738
I'd suggest getting a standard griptillian and getting custom scales. Lots of people make them and I think they feel way better than the factory plastic ones. As for the rest it all depends on what you plan on doing with it like others said
>>725600
Are you wanting to learn how to freehand? What kind of stones?
>>725155
Sure are a lot of fish in your backyard.
>>725670
I have one from them and it's nicely made. They make nice custom knives too for reasonable cost (versus higher priced Canadian knife makers like Diving Sparrow), they might be willing to customize the knife more than what they have for sale on their site if you inquire about it. They will do spine filework, for example.
I think they're also a bargain right now on their site if you can wait 2-3 weeks for them to make the knife.
I've never really sharpened my knives before but i'm starting to think I should. Should I just get a whetstone? Something else?
>>725789
What is your budget, what kinds of steels will you be sharpening, and would you rather spend a bunch of time at the beginning to learn, but be able to sharpen very fast once you do learn, or not waste time learning up front but take longer to sharpen each knife?
>>725740
I'm actually canadian which is why it's still a great value to me. There is only one local knife dealer that sells a wide array and it's pretty pricey. I like supporting canadian companies so I'm gonna contact them about custom a custom knife. How do you like yours? Any pictures? What size and steel and all did you get?
>>725809
It is M2 steel with a Granadillo wood handle (I love granadillo when it has a dark/light contrast like pic related.) Blade length is around 4 inches, droppoint FFG. Not really any additional bells and whistles.
I don't have a picture on hand. I like it! I would only recommend M2 to others along with the warning that it should be protected against rust... it's a good blade steel but it's nowhere near stainless.
>good looking knife
>has a bunch of holes and bits of steel drilled out of it
for what fucknig purpose
you safe a negligible amount of weight and the knife's durability and strength is demolished
>>726168
Spyderco? That's the exact same issue I have with them. Otherwise I think they are the perfect EDC knife. Not too expensive, good handles/scales, not BenchMeme pricing, etc.
>>726189

>>726195
There are a lot of neckbeard knife collectors around here though. And that's fine, to each his own. But don't claim you are a survivalist because you own 12 Benchmades and your main hobby is sharpening and oiling carbon blades.
Sometimes it's a good thing though because when somebody actually needs a quality tool that will last, they have these people to ask. They may not have any experience, but goddamn to they no the pros and cons of VAG36 Carbon Steel.
>>726206
oh yeah I get that, people like that should just be honest that their hobby is knife collecting, not survivalist stuff. no shame in it, just don't misrepresent yourself and things will work out
like, if I were a knife collector, I wouldn't go on a camping trip with someone and not mention that I only collect knives and don't have any experience, just like I wouldn't get in bed with a guy without telling him I have a penis first
>>726210
Well you're more polite than most of us. I'm waiting until he's inside of me to let him know I have a penis. They're more likely just to keep going with it at that point.
But yeah, some of these people need to admit they have never attemped to cut anything harder than a banana with all 17 of their Spydercos.
I can safely admit that my $25 CRKT will indeed cut through a banana. I have yet to baton a banana with it though, so I'm not going to say "Full tang! Baton away!".
My Ka-Bar heavy bowie has been serving me well for years. I use it as a general camp knife when I'm backpacking and it's great. Tough enough to take one hell of a beating (some people cut logs with it?) and I think it feels really comfortable in my large hands.
While it's design is pretty minimal I think it's pretty cool looking. I'm not a fan of the funky blade shapes or patterns, though damascus steel is pretty cool.
>>726224
I just meant in general since a lot of blades these day have really bizarre shapes and bits cut out, but yeah that fits the "funky blade shape" category.
>>726206
>And that's fine, to each his own. But don't claim you are a survivalist because you own 12 Benchmades and your main hobby is sharpening and oiling carbon blades.
Who is doing this? I've got some very nice knives in my opinion, but don't consider myself better than the guy with 1 second hand mora and nothing else. People who feel superior that way actually really irritate me, actually.
I'd suggest at least as far as my own posts are concerned- they're never from a position of superiority at all. Just adding my two cents since I might happen to have that knife/brand and people are asking for comments about them.
>If you're not a consumer whore, then just buy whatever $1 knife from a flea market, borrow your moms kitchen knife, or scavenge a sharp piece of metal from a scrapyard. THEYRE ALL THE SAME
Not even close. You might be surprised at how shit bargain basement knives can be.
Also, some of us are into sharpening and knives as hobbies, so we buy, sharpen and carry lots of knives. I use every single pocket knife I own for EDC and keep them very, very sharp.
Granted some collect knives in the sense of being knife shaped baseball cards, but I doubt many of THEM are posting in /out/.
I also don't pretend to know anything about /out/ subjects whatsoever. I just like the more practical knife discussions on here compared to /k/.
>>726233
It's not even about "superiority" or anything like that. It's about that collector guy with the $400 custom blade telling the camper that his $50 stainless steel Kershaw is shitty and says he should get a $150+ carbon steel instead because he can sharpen it to a point far beyond the actual camper would ever need.
Not always that exact situation, but lots of advice in these threads seems to be like that.
>>725800
I dont really know what my budget is because I dont even have an idea of what things cost. I would rather spend time learning at the beginning though.
>>726244
>It's not even about "superiority" or anything like that. It's about that collector guy with the $400 custom blade telling the camper that his $50 stainless steel Kershaw is shitty and says he should get a $150+ carbon steel instead because he can sharpen it to a point far beyond the actual camper would ever need.
>Not always that exact situation, but lots of advice in these threads seems to be like that.
I never do that. I entirely agree it's shitty to do. I'll say negative stuff (buck folding knives are often off center compared to other brands I handle, condor occasionally has issues with how well they grind the pins on their handles), but giving a guy a hard time for owning a $20 kershaw is shitty as hell.
>>726173
What are you doing with a folder where you apply enough side load to break a blade?
>>726259
I know I'm not as worried as him about breaking it. But I still think it looks odd which drives me away from them. Everything besides the giant hole in the blade looks like it makes a perfect EDC which it the biggest reason it bugs me. I wish that wasn't their signature thing and they made normal blades.
>>725857
That's a beautiful pattern right there!
I've never owned a carbon blade before. Are they difficult to maintain? Been reading up on it and I'm confused to shit at this point trying to make heads or tails
>>724837
Although it's become a meme you should get a Mora, despite the hate they get because of their ubiquity they are a very good knife and relatively cheap.
My first outdoor knife was a chefs knife from a yard sale, I paid a whole dollar for it and used it for five years before getting another more conventional bushcraft knife, the chef's knife worked great and the high carbon steel held a very sharp edge for a long time, it's only downside was you had to keep an eye on it or rust would grow on it in no time.
Pic very related, it's almost exactly what I carried for five years.
>>726246
For the record, I have never given someone advice about knife choices or sharpening equipment without asking their budget first.
I know a bit about steels, metallurgy, knives and sharpening and try to help out where I can from what I know, and try to keep my mouth shut about the things I don't.
>>726248
If you are willing to invest the time up front, then I recommend learning to freehand sharpen on full sized benchstones. It will take some time to learn (I recommend practicing on cheap knives), but once you get the hang of it you can sharpen knives very quickly.
When it comes to benchstones, you could literally spend less than $50 or more than $500 depending on what you get.
The cheapest and easiest place to start if you aren't sharpening very high carbide steels is to get a Norton combination India stone (green/orange) and use it with mineral oil.
You won't have to worry about keeping the stone flat, and they are pretty cheap.
There are also waterstones and diamond plates, but those are more expensive options.
>>724837
Opinel every time.
>>726309
No.You can get a mora for the same price which is much sturdier and has a better grind for /out/ related tasks.
>>726309
I also vote no to Opinel as a first bushcraft knife, while you can use a folding knife in a pinch for bushcraft, you are way better off in every way using a fixed blade.
Himalayan imports. They have a forum on bladeforums where they post blemishes or blades that fall outside their normal inventory for a discount. You have to be really fast though. I got a really heavy chopper with a full handle instead of tang. I beat the shit out of it for the last 6 years and it's still great.
>>726264
You used one? I don't like the way they look either but I much prefer thumbholes to use over a stud and if/when I buy a mini grip it'll be the thumbhole version.
>>726376
Someone was asking about a cheap bush craft knife...
didn't even mention using it to process fire. For all we know, the person asking about the knife may have an ax already.
Why go toxic so fast?
>>726378
Yeah I know. Clicked send before editing it. Let my shitty side take control of that post.
Although I still recommend opinel an over a mora. Erry time.
I have a $100 giftcard to Walmart. Anything from there or their website worth buying?
>>726674
What are you into? Just looking for knives? They probably have some decent sharpening systems and I know they carry Kershaws, CRKTs, and Bucks in store so I'm sure there is even more on their website.
The website is a clusterfuck to browse though since they carry so much damn stuff.
>>726674
Wow, they actually carry Ka-Bars and Spydercos too. Their pricing on everything looks decent too. You won't have a hard time finding something.
>>726677
I'm just getting into survival/preparedness and will be looking for a full-tang blade in stainless. I already plan on buying some cheap Morakniv to practice bushcraft with but I'd like to have a great knife ready to go when I have to go.
I'm thinking a medium-sized blade ( 5-8 inches ) that'll be able to do a bit of everything from skinning game/cleaning hides to making tent steaks, spoons, etc.
>>726681
Neat sharpener. I'm going to assume you like Spyderco products; may I ask about some of your favorites?
>>726685
I actually hate the big goofy hole in the blade with Spydercos. But they are regarded as a really good company.
Sounds like you might want to look for some Ka-Bar fixed blades like the Beckers. I'm not really a knoife fag though, I just parrot what I hear around here.
Pic not related. Just didn't expect the Walmart website to have Benchmades.
>>726685
Damn, they have Ontarios too. These knives are a standby for what you are looking to get into. There is the RAT 3, 5, and 7. Just different blade lengths.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ontario-Knife-Company-RAT-5-1095-Knife/22339728
>>726692
It's a hole for your thumb to open it as opposed to a traditional stud. And I think it said the RAT was 1095 Carbon Steel.
>>726695
Ah, thanks.
That Spyderco sharpener is pretty nifty and strikes me as something compact enough to toss into a bug-out bag. I might have to take a look at their knives. May I ask what your favorite knives are, why they are and what you think of Walmart's prices on them if they sell them?
>>726692
http://www.walmart.com/ip/BOKER-ARBOLITO-02BA314G-BOKER-ARBOLITO-BUFFALO-SOUL-I/35488390
I think Boker and Condor are supposed to be decent brands too. They seem to have lots of those. If I had that $100 gift card I would probably do the RAT 5 or 7 if you want to go big and then spend the rest on some sharpening stones or whatever.
Some of the stuff on their site is sold by different vendors so hopefully the gift card works for that. But the knives I linked have all been Walmart itself.
>>726699
All of the knives I own are either stuff that somehow ends up in my car because somebody dropped it or I found them on clearance, so disregard any of that. Walmarts prices actually look really good on most of the stuff I was looking at. Those Ontarios are priced really well.
Only thing I really paid full price for was my Leatherman because fishing.
/out/ is slow. Check back later tonight and I'm sure there will be more reccommendations from people who own some of those knives. I just know tons of people here own those RATs for outdoor stuff and I have never heard a complaint. They don't cost so much either where you are afraid to really use them.
>>726708
I'll be sure to check back tonight, thanks. I also asked /k/ what they thought and will let you guys know if they bring up anything interesting.
>>726213
is the CRKT actually worth it? i'm looking to get a decent neck knife or a cheap knife to strap to the side of my pack that i can use for food prep
>>726283
not really my puukko which is carbon has never rusted even in snow, just wipe it on something dry (like your pants) before storing it in the sheath
>>726822
The one in that pic is the C/K Dragon so it is a bit bigger. But those are an old model so they are all over eBay on clearance for like $25. Can't really go wrong at that price.
But I have the SPEW that is kinda my EDC and those run $30-$40. I like it a lot. The shape of the blade makes it quite compact in the sheath so I wear it on my belt all day and don't even notice the thing is there.
I got this knife from my grandfather this weekend. I think it was made in poland many years ago. It seems to be stainless steal. I hope it will serve me well.
>>726842
I really like the handle, can't say anything about the blade as I don't know the steel. Still looks like that would serve you many years as most knives would do anon
>>726685
>I'm thinking a medium-sized blade ( 5-8 inches ) that'll be able to do a bit of everything from skinning game/cleaning hides to making tent steaks, spoons, etc.
5" is really on the top end of medium knives, 8" is big and for the tasks you've listed would be very unwieldly. I'd be looking for a 3-4" knife for those jobs.
decided to upgrade from a pocket knife and hacksaw to something a little nicer, d-did I do good?
Ordered a Mora Classic I just recently, should be here tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone knows what was does to the handle of the knives/carving instruments pictured? I really really hate the red handle.
>>727069
Just sandpaper the paint off
>>727068
yes, that's what is often recommended around here
Hi guys; what do you think of D2 Steel on your /out/ tools? At first glance it seems like a great compromise because you have a lot more corrosion resistance than you do with carbon steels but you get "strength above stainless steels" too.
This might sound pretty bad but I have to ask: does Spyderco have any decent bushcraft knives or outdoor tools; and I mean truly decent?
Ever since Pepsi posted that sharpmaker tool Spyderco went from "meme tier" in my mind to being respectable and I'm now seriously considering purchasing some of their knives for the first time. I'd prob get an Assist in orange for EDC but what about /out/ing? I did see they have a bushcrafter blade but I also notice it lacked jimping for your thumb. what else do they have?
>>727390
Do they make a lot of fixed blades? All I ever see people post is the folders. But I haven't looked on their website much or anything.
>>727419
I've seen a few; the two I like most are either discontinued or soon will be ( Rock Salt/Schemmp Rock ( which is basically a re-design of the Rock Salt ) but they do have a bushcrafting fixed blade, some other fixed blades that look a lot like their folders and even an tactical axe made of D2 steel. They also seem to be involved with the Randall Made knives.
>>727074
I can't tell if they lightly stained it for not
>>727386
It's great for cutting duties, game prep, food prep, rope etc but don't buy it for a knife you're going to shock load or twist, especially if it's been heat treated to take advantage of it's potential edge holding.
Okay team; I'm buying my first high-quality bushcraft/survival knife. I know popular /out/ knife brands are Benchmade, Ontario and Spyderco and, if possible, I'd rather it be made of stainless.
Suggestions?

Oh good, that way it can chip to hell on every single accidental bone contact ams be impossible to field sharpen.
Great idea :^)

>>728274
Not Calvin (these names are actually useful :p) But, as a diver you really want the serrated edge to cut lines more easily. Also, if diving in cold water you will be wearing thick gloves, so must be a thick handle for good grip.
>>728589
>I've always wanted an /out/ bf
>also I have a penis
Don't beat yourself up over it. I have a penis too. Lots of people have them and live moderately happy lives.

Hey guys, I have some questions about some knives I was going to look at and I'll keep the questions about each blade with the pic of each one and I'm just hoping you can help me out. Pic related to second knife; this one is just coated black.
>>729185
So the first knife I want to ask about is the
SPYDERCO BILL MORAN UPSWEPT TRAILING POINT BLADE ~ FB01.
>What do you feel a flat-grind "upswept trailing point blade" is good for in terms of bushcraft, camping and survival?
>Do you think it is easy to sharpen this style of blade?
>It says it is made with VG10 steel; how do you feel that is for bushcraft?
>>729185
>>729192
The second knife seems to be the same knife as my first image, just without the black coating and it comes with a sheath.
>What do you feel a flat-grind "drop-point blade" is good for in terms of bushcraft, camping and survival?
>Do you think it is easy to sharpen this style of blade?
>It says it is made with VG10 steel; how do you feel that is for bushcraft?

>What do you feel the scandi-grind "clip point blade" is good for in terms of bushcraft, camping and survival?
>Is it easy to sharpen this style of blade?
>It says it is made with O-1 Steel; how do you feel that is for bushcraft?
>>729195
I'll make this really easy for you: If you cannot answer the question "what males this functionally better than a carbon steel Mora for bushcraft" without outside assistance, you should be buying a Mora instead.

Forgive me; I forgot to mention a few things. I'm really comparing these blades to one-another and their intended use will be in a bug-out bag/get-home bag. You can also find each of these knives at...

No, that neither makes things easier nor helps. I'm already getting a few Morakniv for practicing but in terms of something for camping/survival I don't believe a Morakniv is something I could trust.

another "guys, don't buy good knives, to make me feel better over being unable to afford one" autist.
>>728318
ok so seriously is there a way for me to make the handle smaller on this, or am I just stuck with it?
>>729171
>nice kitchen knife
funny thing is BÖKER stole the design from an premium knife maker. like always.
Sure.. You can file it down some. It wont be pretty any more tho. Alternative is return it and buy a mora blank and attach your own handle. Or just a diffrent kniof all together.
>>729231
>stolen knife design.
Sorry theres no such fucking thing. A shape of a blade doesnt count as the design... Now if a company engraved their knives with fancy pattern work. And another company was copying them. Then thats stolen design. You can't steal the fundamental aspect of a tool such as a knife... "Oh friskers stole the GB axe design." Because it looks like an axe....
>>729229
I'm not sure what the interior of the handle looks like. Maybe have a backup plan of making a new handle if things go terribly wrong.
I found a picture that makes it look like you may be able to just remove some plastic, carefully. Assuming that's the same model and they still make the handles that way.
Also be my gf.
>>729264
eh I might just wear gloves when I use it, that's a lot less risky than messing with the handel
>>729199
Okay, how about this:
Why do you want relatively short VG-10 Spyderco fixed blades for this application instead of a larger knife in an easier to field-sharpen and tougher steel?
What do you anticipate doing with these knives that wouldn't be better served with a more established bushcraft or survival choice?
>>729221
Yes, because one needs to spend $200+ USD to get a production scandi ground knife in O1 instead of literally getting a custom O1 fixed blade for cheaper instead :^)
>>729264
>Also be my gf
>>729270
>eh I might

how is that a knife's fault, surely you were using a screwdriver to unscrew something? I mean, you wouldn't be stupid enough to use a knife to unscrew things, r-right?

>using the blade to make a spark
HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Oh well, if he treats his tools like that, I won't have to kill him, nature will eventually take care of that.
I think it's sharp goys
I pried some shit with my knoife and had a lil chip in it. Had to hit it with the coarse diamond deal and it's a pain to get a razor edge after doing that. Not horrible but not nearly as easy as just touching it up. I did coarse diamond block, fine diamond block, and then coffee mug and it seems to work bretty gud.
>>729423
It's OK. You could just be my gf and I won't need to use my sweet sharkfist blade if you don't want it.
Hey /out/, can I ask you a question about a little more than just knives here?
I recently stumbled upon a YouTube video giving some pretty high praise to Schrade's tactical pen and it made me curious about the company. I hadn't bothered with them since they had gone out of business and then were later revived by Taylor Brands ( who now own Schrade, Uncle Henry, Old Timer, Imperial and Smith & Wesson knives/tools/etc ). I was actually pretty impress with what I saw and intend to look at some YT reviews on more of their products tomorrow but seeing items like pic related, the pen ( see below ) and their folding saws/axes made me wonder if their products were decent. What does /out/ think of the current products being put out by them?

bear grylls
>>729424
Did this thread get made? I can't find it.
>>729656
Pls don't make it.
The bump limit is 310/150. There is no reason to make another thread before then, especially on a board as slow as /out/. And there are always 10 other knife threads at any given time if one isn't enough for you.
>>728938
no. this one is about 3mm at the thickest. and it has a distilled taper. i really like the thickness on this one, works well for most tasks.

I didn't hate on anyone, I was just pointing out when you're filthy rich people being jimmy rustled by you isn't exactly a big deal.
>>728172
No
It's shit.
Fällkniven is very overhyped, more so at the current prices.
Dont fall for the meme like I did. Their edges won't hold for shit and will break readily.
For 250 you can get a small INFI Busse.
>>728247
Mission if you have the money.
Katz makes a sweet dagger
Otherwise Spydercos with H1 steel.
>>729853
Do you order them or what, the sites permanently sold out I swear.
This does everything I need a knife to do innawoods.
>>729855
Second hand is best hand.
Either retailers and small shops or ebay or the forums.
Bladeforums has the best Busse prices.
Besides, the most interesting models are all discontinued models.
>>729863
Ahh, fair enough, if I'm buying off BF then there's probably 100 or so knives I'd buy first though.
>>729861
SS or Carbon Marttini?
>>729878
Stainless, works for me since I suck taking care of the thing anyhow. Can't remember the last time I sharpened that POS (years ago or never). Got two of em, other one is a little worn out at the blade but nothing a little sharpening wont buff off.
>>729881
Is it the Inox version or the Carbinox, I'm asking because I've been looking at some Marttinis, theres a shop local to me that sell them alongside Moras for the same $
>>727386
It's not very good for a zero-ground scandi because it will chip because it's so hard.
>>727867
It's 1095 carbon with a zinc phosphate coating.
>>728367

So Hi KG17, Have any of you ordered a knife from Lester River Bushcraft? If so how was it? I'm thinking of giving them an order.

Eating wood all day.
>>724837
I don't think anybody has mentioned it yet but you could do a lot worse than getting a Buck 119, I bought mine 12 years ago and it is still going strong, I've used it to dress game, gut fish, cut bait, whittle, build traps, build shelters and just about anything else you might use a knife outdoors for, it may not be the sexiest knife out there but it is a great workhorse if you look after it.
>>730015
Looks chintz af
>>730390
Not surprising because Buck makes some of the best knives in the world. What is surprising is how they never seem to be in the conversation.
>>730463
Not tacticool or expensive enough
>>730478
Suddenly the reason why makes sense. How could I have missed that?
>>728318
I LIKE YOUR NAILS.
No but I literally just got my mora today too. Same exact one. The handle is AMAZING. Fuck you tahm bout?
Pic related has served me well
>>730495
That is too sad, I've been very lucky with my knives, my 119 is 12 years old and my liner lock knife is almost 20 years old, it's a Harley Davidson knife I bought in a bar at Daytona Beach, it looks rough now but is strong and as sharp as ever.
Because knives tend to last with me I rarely look at others so I've no idea what the state of the market is these days.
Can anybody tell me how the current Schrade knives are?
>>730793
i have the 2000 too but i got it second hand and it had a chip in the transition part between the scandi and flat grind but it was never an issue so i don't intend on removing it
So I just found pic related for $37-$38.00 and it comes with the sheath and sharpening stone. I know Ontario Knife is supposed to make some good knives but is this one of them? I've heard it isn't full-tang and the blade rusts pretty easily which concerns me if I'm going to be out for more than a month and lack access to oils and the like.
By the way, the saw on the blade seems really impractical and I'm wondering if you know what it is supposed to be used for.
>>731007
Ka-bar design is a meme and belongs over at >>/k/
Get a Mora for less than half the price, the Companion is a solid piece for anyone that knows how to use a knife. The handle on that Ontario will murder your hands on anything but short, easy tasks.
