because serrations have a very narrow application, while a plain edge is better for general use. Also - combo blades tend to have the serrations right where the most useful part of the blade is. Unless you have a very specific reason that requires serrations, you should have a plain edge.

And no, serrations are not something you get "because they don't bother you and might come in handy" - you either specifically need them, or you don't want them.

for bushcraft the most used part of the blade is the first 2-3cms.
serrations cut certain stuff better but those stuff that are not found in nature.

so they suck as bushcraft knives but work better as rescue knives altho rescue knives usually don't have a point safer that way.

Get a coarse and super fine EzeLap oval diamond steel (google it) and get a regular honing steel as well.

1K/6K (or similar) waterstone to get them sharp, a good honing rod to keep them sharp.

Its good because chipoltle and a large coke is more expensive than a Mora, so you dont feel as burned if you dont like it or it breaks. other than that, its one of the few outdoor related companies that offer a decent product a literally a fair price.

That's why I can't justify buying a Benchmade. I'm sure they're nice and all, but I feel like you are paying 80% of that $200 retail price for the name. I'm sure some people will disagree, but seems like ~$50 should be a good price for a high quality folding knife. Providing you aren't getting totally raped by retailers and middlemen.

I'm stoked on that $17 Kershaw Antelope Hunter and $25 CRKT CK Dragon or whatever. Clearance and discontinued models are GOAT. I want a decent tool, not a fashion statement.

The ~$40 for that little CRKT SPEW seemed tall for that little knife, but I really like the thing after carrying it around a bit. The size of it and the compact sheath makes it a great replacement for a folder.

Really dissapointed in this Svord, havent bought one in 10 years and this has an uneven flat ground and isnt even sharp. Ill sharpen and see if it holds an edge or its going back to Brian Baker for an explanation.

Serrations only make sense on short blades.
Long straight edges can cut textiles and rope without and effort.
I can't think of one reason I would carry a serrated edge innawoods. Serrations are of great use for tactical situations though.

They vary. Stay away from carbide ones, they fugg your edge up. Ceramic ones are breddy good, as long as they're the right angle. Just make sure to clean it now and again.

I was playing with that sharpener on this old Frost knife that had like zero edge left. It got the thing pretty sharp even though I barely know what I am doing.

The instructions for the sharpener also said it takes a bit of use before the cutting surface is broken in and really starts to remove material well. But it still put a decent edge on an incredibly dull blade fairly quick.

What is the verdict on wet vs dry sharpening? Instructions said I could go dry, with water, or oil. I just did it dry. Is there a huge advantage to the oil? If I don't do the oil, will there be a big improvement with water?

Both the Ontario RAT and ESEE 3 are brilliant knives. I think the ESEE is worth the extra cash, too. If you want a 4" knife why not just get the ESEE 4 if you're going down the RAT route? I prefer scandi knives for bushcraft and camping for its proficiency in woodcutting. I own lots of scandi knives, many of them just Finnish Puukos but I have a couple of full tang ones too which are the Casström No.10 in O2 and the TBS boar in K720. Both are amazing and some of my favourites.

I have the Ontario 3, and its a very comfortable knife to carry and use. Some people don't think the handle is thick enough, but i don't have anything against it.

I'd probably suggest the ESEE just for the warranty, but you can't go wrong with either.

Durability a little... Though there are pleanty of strong enough stick and partial tang knives out there. Often stick tang knives break where the blade thins down to the stick part. Useable if a handle slab comes off also. Then there's the comfort of just knowing its' as strong as a knife of it's shape and type can possibly be - that's pretty nice.

I like those little Spyderco fixed blades. Their folders have thay goofy shape on the spine of the blade though. I'm thinking about getting a decent folder one of these days. Saw some CRKT on sale at Dick's today that looked cool and almost grabbed it but I'm gonna sit on that idea for awhile and maybe try one of those RATs or something.

I think the CRKT was the Carson M-16 SS. It was kinda slim which was cool looking. Partially serrated blade tho and you guys would make fun of me.

They're fine, but spydercos branded spyderco are better and tend to have better steels. The steel handled byrds sometimes have rust on them and I don't like how heavy they are.

With CRKT, their Taiwan made knives tend to be better than their China made knives. The aluminum handled M16s like M16-03S are really nice and come from their Taiwan manufacturing.

Spydercos aren't about looks, they are about functionality and comfort. Excellent slicing with that full-flat grind, and excellent control because the handles are usually more ergonomic.

Once you've used one, you'll probably be a convert. I used to think they looked dumb too.

But after buying my first Spyderco, I sold my Kershaws and Benchmades.

I'd say that's bad heat treatment where they quench the whole blade at once. Edge should be hard while the back and tang is softer/tougher.

Here's one that's up for much debate and personal preference plays a big role. Water/oil on the stone keep the bits of metal and stone that have been removed suspended above the stone, but sometimes they get to the blade edge and make tiny nicks. Some people go with wet sharpening because the stones are less trouble to maintain that way, some people go with dry stones because the produced edge is finer and more regular. I go with oil on my coarser stones (220 grit and soft Arkansas), dry on my finer stones (hard and black hard Arkansas). Hit your stones with soap and water and a toothbrush every so often and buildup isn't a big deal either way.

File blades tend to be too brittle after you harden them again. For the first few, just use a $10 prepared blank like those from northcoastknives.com. Blade steel is available lots of places. Find something you can harden properly at home. 1095 is good, but picky about heat treatment. Same with all three common 440 steels. Try something like 1075 or tool steel.

Pic related, one of my early efforts on a $10 blade blank. Handle is cedar from my own tree branch that was broken in an ice storm. I've been pleasantly surprised with how well it's held an edge.

This is my knoif. There are many like it but this one is mine.
Bang for buck I just absolutely love this knife. It's done a stupid quantity of work over the couple of years I've had it and I absolutely love it. The edge retention isn't bad at all but it's still easy to get shaving sharp. Never takes more than a minute or two to do so.
I've beat the fuck out of it with sticks when chopping through heavier stuff and I've whittled a fuck tonne of stuff with it. The very very tip broke off once when I threw it and it struck a steel beam but it's just fine. As I said. Bang for buck the Clipper has always been the tits for me.

but i think their machetes are the ones that really do break regularly in the handle (especially the parang) at the screw. but plenty off them broke at the blade too.

basically gerber cut down the blade width to one fifth at a certain point just about guaranteeing that it will break there. they also made some of their machetes a not even quarter tang more like a short double rat tang really. if they did this before the hardening the blade will be extremely fragile at that point with less material and lots of surface it would have a faster cool-down than the blade while you usually want the handle part to be softer so it is more shock resistant.

No idea on that. I've only really used it for cutting fishing line and chopping up some carrots and bananas for my bunny. I've only had it for a couple of weeks.

It's only like 6" long total. And they have that little cord thing on the end so you only really grab the handle with 2-3 fingers, and your pinkie wraps around the cord. Interesting design.

Like I said, I see it more as a good replacement for a ~3" folder. That is the first fixed blade I have ever really carried around, and it feels so much more sturdy than a folder and is definitely lighter as well.

I love the grippy for its ergonomics, I can literally flip it out thanks to the axis lock, that makes it a really handy one hand knives. And yes, they take their time to get sharp, the hollow grind was a bad idea, they should have used flat grind spidy style.
The other thing I like about it is that I got it for years with constant use, and it still works..

It's good if your edges are already roughly aligned with the angles it can offer. Both the rough and the fine stones are comparatively fine really. The rough stone on the Sharpmaker is comparable to a 600 grit stone and the fine a 1200 grit. People are often frustrated by the Sharpmaker because such fine stones take a very long time to remove a lot of metal, they're more meant for polishing. Using the edge and the flat of the triangular prism shaped rods that come with the Sharpmaker speed this up a little and you can indeed cheat and wrap different grits of emery cloth around your rods but it's not ideal.

If you want to reprofile quickly you want something more like 120 grit which is extremely rough. I would follow those up with a 220 and a 400 before I sharpened on a 600 like the one that comes with the Sharpmaker.

Overall I would rate it highly if you're looking to maintain folders and knives used for fairly light duty. If you run into any serious damage you need to fix, if something new shows up with a shitty grind or you just want to reprofile for different performance then you're going to have a difficult time.

That's a decent price. I think I paid $30 or $35 at Bass Pro. Other big retailers were wanting $40-$45 for them when I looked online afterwards.

I'm sure I could've found a better price on eBay or something, but that knife was kinda an impulse buy. I was just looking around at Bass Pro and grabbing some fishing stuff and really liked it.

And the steel is whatever. It's a $30 knife. It's not the worst, but it's no ultra-premium $150 blade.

Alan Folts is a good designer.If you can't afford the 160+ dollar price tag on one of his knives, the crkt is a decent proxy. You won't get amazing results or edge retention, but it's super easy to get them hair-popping sharp - they just won't stay that way for very long, and the finish is kinda "meh", but for 30 sheckels they're not a bad deal.
