Also looking for anything related to coffee. I love coffee and a good, flavorful cup is worth any hassle. It's therapeutic just making it.

Here in Sweden we have "kokkaffe", which is just coarse grind coffee that you can brew and let settle in a single pan for outdoors expeditions. It's kind of like Turkish coffee. You can also bring "coffee cheese" for it, which I guess is an old adaptation to when you couldn't carry milk around 'cause it would get spoiled.

Another thing I love to drink while /out/doors in cold weather is "glögg", which I can only describe as something like wine and chai tea mixed together. It's similar to American "hot cider", with alcohol, kind of like what
>>636755
posted. As a bonus, you usually put some raisins and... Activated almonds... in it, which you're likely to carry around as trail mix anyway.
>>
>>634700
I hear you! Boiling while hiking takes too much coordination.
>>
>>637487
Oh I love glögi as it is said in Finland. Here it is sold at christmas cause its More like christmas drink.

>>637547

Any of you drink yaupon tea? It's pretty delicious, and got plenty of caffeine and theobromine. In fact it's one of the few, if not the only (and strongest) caffeinated plant native to North America.
If you're in the southeast of the US it's worth trying, that shit grows like a weed and is damn near indestructible... It's literally everywhere around here, and yet nobody knows about it or drinks it.

>>641271
Nice. Yaupon is Ilex vomitoria and is fairly closely related to Ilex paraguariensis. Similar-ish flavor.

Forgot my pic.
Berries are slightly toxic, but the leaves aren't. The name Ilex vomiter came about due to it's use by indians in a purification ritual in which they drink massive amounts of the tea brewed very strongly and then induce vomitting. The leaves are not emetic though.
>>
>>641560
It's pretty easily available in N America at least. The cafe at my school even has it now along side the coffee and tea. Any grocery store should carry it as well.
>>
>>641560
it's available in supermarkets. you'd need the gourd and straw as well because it's really not the same when prepared as a tea
if you know any argentine/uruguayan/brazilian person ask them to make it for you, it takes a bit of skill to prepare a good mate

This stuff makes amazing tea. Its called Mormon Tea and grows wild in the Mojave. All I do is rip off some stalks and cut them into inch lengths then boil them for about five minutes in water to get a lot of it in the tea. Tastes sweet like you've added a little honey and is natural ephedra so it gives you an energy boost. You don't need to dry it but I am drying a bunch in my garage.
>>
any tea snobs who refuse to use tea bags? how do you steep your loose leaf tea?

I like this thing. It's got strainer, and air/water tight container for holding your loose leaf which doubles as a press to remove water from leaves so you can reuse your tea, if it's a reusable type that is.

I have at least 50 different loose leaf teas and anyone that refuses to use a bag for convenience is an idiot. Lots of brands make circular 'pod' type tea bags that can be brought along, used, and discarded. They are biodegradable because they are essentially paper and tea, I wonder where those things came from.

That said, this travel tea container looks dope. This is what I use right now because it is easy to clean. Just open it, bang it on something, put it away.

>>
>>642770
I'm not a tea snob, but I've been making my own tea so it doesn't have bags.

I grind mine into a powder though so lots of the infusers or like a french press set up wouldn't work so great I guess. I don't really worry about it though, I just dump that shit in the water then let it settle off at the bottom.

Lipton Yellow, which is like standard tea here. Usually with lots of sugar and sometimes some rum. Sometimes I'll make nettle or pine needle tea but it's more to break the monotony, I'm not that fond of it. If I'm in a wet area I'll try to forage for some mint and make mint tea with tons of sugar, this is truly GOAT.

Before I go /out/ where I won't have access to a coffee pot, I take coffee grounds and tie them inside coffee filters cut in half. Instant coffeebags. Hit the coffee threads on /ck/.
But in short entry level recommendations are going to be.
1. Locally roasted beans (medium, never dark roast)
2. Hario Skerton hand burr grinder
3. Either French press, aeropress, or V60 pour over
4. Preferably a kettle that accurately brings water to a specific temperature. (you never want to use boiling water for coffee)
>>

>>
>>634633
gunpowder is my favorite too.
>>
>>653591
>>653802
And get a grinder.
Beans preserve much more flavor than ground coffee.

The psycho amount of cafeïne are released whilst cooking the coffee, so you don't have to use the filters at home. Just put ground coffee in a pot, add water, boil it and let it boil for a while.
Don't add milk in the pot, the grounds will never sink.

I believe russians do this with tea. They let it boil for quite a time, until they get a very concentrated liquid. Then they thin the concentrate with hot water. In prison this concentrate is used as a drug.

What is gun powder tea? Never heard of it.
>>
I usually take a thermos of green tea with jasmin on day hikes with me. Any long term /out/ trips and the thermos isn't really worth it (because it's kind of heavy, and if I'm carrying a stove I can just boil water freshly at start or end of day).

Anyone else drink green tea with jasmin? The best brands I've found are T2 and Dilmah, the latter being easily the best. I find jasmin makes green tea so much nicer. I'm also partial to a marocan mint tea, but that's kind of hard to prepare when /out/.

this isn't strictly /out/ related but on the topic of thermos usage, I often make a coffee before bed and store it next to my bed. When I wake up in the morning it's still steaming hot and I have a nice, fresh warm coffee before I even get out of bed, which is pretty sweet.

It's a type of tea, just like coffee you can get different types of tea, gun powder, oolong tea, Earl Grey and green tea, just to name a few.

The tea we most widely drink in the UK is a blend of many teas rather than just one type.

Jasmine green tea is top tier! My personal choices are plain, jasmine and lemon.

Have you tested your underquilt yet?
>>
>>672000
Yes I have, it is very usefull, but its too cold below -5 celsius and now we have like -20
>>
>>671571
room & weight are only factors. They'll brew fine on fire or damned near any campstove.

And of course how much you want/love espresso.

Holy shit. Great advise sir. Now every1 can avoid autists with this simple test! Who would have known that hot beverage works as an autism detergent.

Mate is literally 10 times better than Tea
>no tanin taste
>no need to eat before drinking
>tastes better

I personally love coffee but having a nice cup of hot chocolate while snowed in is amazing. That's hardly manchild.

Kek'd & checked
>>672669
Why would you need to eat before drinking tea?
>>

I usually buy my Tea raw and use a fuckload of it. You can pave a road with it, it gives you some slight nausea.

I don't like the coffee in them. Too weak.

I'll make boiled coffee, or bring Russian Caravan tea or mate. I gather wild flowers or pine for something non-caffeinated.

So... Normal coffee?
>>
A few years ago I used to be in an airsoft team. We mostly just went innawoods with our rifles and gear, no opponent and all. I was our squad's 'designated britfag' and carried an old, hideous kettle on top of my backpack. I tell you, mates, there is nothing like a cup of earl grey and crumpets in a tree-pit snow shelter after six hours march in a snowstorm... Bloody good times, chaps.

Things to make hot beverages with while /out/?

So far I've got
>nettles
>pine needles
>mint

Anything else /out/ would recommend? It's pretty difficult to come across anything but pine needles during times when I would want a hot beverages.

Iles paraguayensis
or for most Argentinos, 'Mate'
Yerba mate: the herb
Mate, the cup
Matear: to drink some 'Mates'

Its a social infusion, you pour some hot water, you sip, then you pour more water and share with everyone in the camping

Very HTML skill also
>>
>>672669
Brasilian version of Mate (chimarrao) used a powder Yerba Mate, that still taste like a plant
The proper Mate use leaves grinded like tea ones, and curated by a long time...
While camping, if you drink a thermo of mate, you can skip a meal

Darjeeling, I just love it. If I bring a stove, I for sure also bring a little trangia kettle along.

For winter fishing I sometimes bring a thermos full of malty Assam and a flask of Irish whiskey.

Yeah

They're pretty good. I've run two and a half canisters thru it - maybe 70 to 80 uses and it still works - seems like the valve is getting a little loose and the whole stove might not be as "tight" as it was when new. Might just be my imagination though... They're well worth the money, I think I paid like 6 or 7 bucks for it.

As someone who is autistic I never once thought about if I like hot drinks or not. Now I can tell you, I don't like hot drinks, and now I will spend my day in the rainforest checking small holes for an exact species of wolf spider and going over in my head every time I've rejected a hot drink, and if I was extremely autistic about it... Thank you, you ruined my day.

>>
>>634633
OP, your drinks are excitant substances, not prone for a trip in nature.
I advise you opt for natural plants you find along the way and you will feel much more in syntony with your surroundings!
Also to be avoided: prepackaged food, dehydrated crap, chocolate and sugar.

I understand it might be a difficult concept to grasp but you should really try it!
