This book called Born to Run came out that touted the benefits of running barefoot. Not that there isn't some merit to it but it led to people spending way too much money on these things.

>>
>>629847 >>629839

I can agree here. It's much easier to walk silently that with shoes or boots on.

I live in a semi-tropical area and work on boats a lot, so I don't wear shoes half the time.

unless you're some indian tracker trying to feel the vibrations of the buffalo herd, barefoot innawoods is retarded.

I'm a big fan of sandals and flip flops. I'm not into having sweaty feet.
>>
>>629822
Ever went up some mountains or rocky hills? Ever jumped down onto hard or jagged surfaces? Ever had to carry a heavy load? Ever crawled or climbed? Ever did all of those things in a single day? Then you might need boots.

If you are just going to take a short relaxing walk in the field, then barefoot is fine, but any serious innawoods trips where you might encounter adverse conditions and carrying loads requires boots.

No gimmicks and no shit

I started ditching shoes about 14 years ago as a student- I was doing an industry placement at the time, and got to spend 9 months sailing deep sea on a chemical tanker. After spending all day clomping around the engine room in a pair of steel toecapped boots at 50 degrees it kinda became my 'thing' to be able to walk around with 'free' feet. I graduated, and became a marine engineer, the pattern repeated. As I was spending 6 months of the year a time on ship, it translated over to being at home too. Over the course of a couple of years my feet became marvellously tough and resilient, I could ( and still can) walk pretty much anything bar broken glass. The same goes in that I wear shorts all year round too, no matter the weather. You just sort of 'get used to it' I'm perfectly comfortable walking around Llanberis in a pair of sandals, shorts and a long sleeve tee, whilst my wife is shivering in a pair of boots, long trousers, and a jacket

Now things are slightly different, I'll wear shoes if I really have to, but for the most part it's sandals as the UK climate is so shitty and wet- and therein lies the secret. Keep the soles of your feet warm and dry- and the rest is toasty warm and fine. From late spring to early autumn it's not unusual to have seen me barefoot everywhere from home to the beach, even the top of Tryfan in years gone by (sandals to get up there mind) I'll take some form of footwear to get where I'm going a lot of the time, but as soon as I'm there it comes off and I'm barefoot until it's time to pack up and trek back.

Don't expect to be full on beast mode overnight, but it is perfectly possible overtime.
>>
>>629922
That really only happens in 3rd world countries, humid tropical countries or extremely dirty places, like possibly going barefoot in the NYC subway. You don't have to worry about that much.

I'm all for anything that feral humans would normally do, barefooting included. Do you have any idea how many extra bacterias and yeasts grow out of control on our feet, just because of the unnaturally hot and humid environment that we subject our feet to inside shoes?

On the other hand, people are assholes and there's broken glass every fucking place. Sandals are probably a decent compromise.
>>
>>629962
i used to run around bare foot a lot back when i didn't know shit about hookworms and such.
i didn't had any medical problems that i know of.

>irish nobility
oxymoron. Ireland is, like, all grass and stone with no snakes. There are a few places in the world where, when the climate is right, would be great and refreshing to walk about barefoot. But, for the most part, thorns, stones, mud, noxious creatures or some other shit is going to make it very uncomfortable for your hippie nonsense.

>>
>>629822
It feels good, the earth beneath your feet. I've never found a pair of shoes as comfortable as bare feet, very people on this board - although they like to think they do - actually do anything where the conditions are extreme enough to warrant footwear. Stop buying into the hype. Going barefoot teaches you to be mindful where you place your feet

Moccasins are really good though. And they will improve your posture and general skeletal well being.
>>
Ignorant people go die.

Walking barefoot is a slippery slope, once you start it is near impossible to quit (if you aren't a pussy faggot mommy bitch).

Anyone with half a brain has heard of grounding and running barefoot. You strengthen your feet, increase circulation, correct posture, reduce inflammation, improve circadian rhythm, etc. All these things are accomplished while barefoot and more.

Going back to wearing a cast on your foot is stupid. I only do it when absolutely necessary which really isn't that often cause I'm not a little bitch.

Stupid story: Was wearing vibram five fingers and had a bad machete swing. It bit through the leather and my toenail stopped the machete edge with minimal cuts to the tip of my big toe, but still bled profusely and separated the toenail. Now I know why people used to wear leather armor: it works. I then went barefoot and walked it off, no big deal. So you might want to consider wearing shoes when wielding sharp implements but then again that isn't necessary if you are elven nobility status.
>>
>>630264
my everyday shoes are leather sperry boat shoes. pretty much moccasins. i do still use boots for long hikes though, and ascics gel nimbus for running. and dress shoes to look good.
>>
I met an old timer in Kakadu who never wore shoes. He said he simply got used to it when he was young.

Though I didn't ask what he did in summer. Sometimes the ground in the sun could easily be 60 degrees C.
>>
>>630279
actually leather armor is better at stopping stabs than cuts, but i guess in your case it was more of a chop which is half way in between.
leather armor also started at 4mm thick and good ones were bull-hide 6-8mm thick heavy and cumbersome as fuark compared to metal of same level of protection no wonder they went out of fashion fast.
also i'm gonna call bullshit on the circadian rhythm thing.
i wouldn't go barefoot anywhere where i can't exactly see the ground because lot of debris and leaves and whatnot. last time i went hiking i noticed how perfect my shoes were for that shit. i can't drive shit in them they are much like casts but on the trail they were just perfect. i could feel rocks and twigs under them but it was not uncomfortable.

>>
>>630472
they exist all around the south. mainly on the coastal plain but i have run into them in the texas hill country.

they really don't hurt that bad they are just annoying. if stickerburs (thats what we call them where i grew up) are the worst you can think of then you have never been in an 'oh shit' situation.

i don't hike barefoot because i don't want to cut my foot on broken glass 8 miles from a road. i would eat raw stickerburs and poop them out over hiking 8 miles with a severely torn up foot

I love walking barefeet, I even took shoes off in classic athletic runner disciplines in school but in a forest? You have to be crazy. There is always something lying undr the leafy cover. A little twig might not bother you with any shoeware but barfeet you risk riping your soles apart and maybe get an infection too.
I guess it is ok for very walked paths.
>>
>>631246
>I guess it is ok for very walked paths.

That's probably even worse. People are pigs and throw all sorts of shit away. Think broken glass bottles and rusty metal. Possibly used needles.
>>
Why not both?

I enjoy barefooting it time from time but I don't believe there's really a 'right' way.
Just know what you're getting into. I always bring an old pair of trail running shoes if I'm barefooting any decent distance just in case.

>>

>>
>>631429
no

on those only the tongue is fur, the rest is the suede side of soft buckskin, and theyre extremely comfortable for the fall

the all fur ones do tend to induce some sweating, i'll feel that out this winter, but as long as its appropriately frigid outside I think they will be perfect

the sheepskin ones or synthetic fur ones I see in stores and stuff make me sweat like crazy but I don't like them anyway

Probably, but whats your point, this isn't a thread about walking barefoot 200 years ago. I've never had a serious medical incident from walking barefoot around my farm accept one time when I accidentally shoved a half inch quarter inch diamiter rod both my heels by pulling a gate over them, but even then a tetanus shot and a few weeks of limping and I was good as new.

>>631677

Could be, or for those who really don't care. I like to wear boots cause its a pain to have to wash my feet all the time, but if I plan on staying outside there is no point. All this hate for the shoe-less just doesn't make sense to me, why does it matter if its not dangerous? I don't like those jackasses with the two week beards and flannels and those Texas rope necklace things, but I don't make threads about who should wear flannels and when.

I go barefoot in the summer. It is much easier to hunt if you're barefoot, you feel the earth better, etc. I like it.

In colder months, and when I have to walk through thick nettles and bushes I will wear anglo saxon turnshoes. You can still feel the earth but you won't get stung and won't get frostbite.

Don't go hiking a steep rocky mountain barefoot; You have to ready yourself for being barefoot. I am looking for a pair of boots that are light (I despise heavy boots and shoe) so i won't look like a reenactor walking around town in turnshoes or barefoot.

no, being barefoot makes you walk slower (to avoid being hurt by sharp objects) so you walk slower when hunting animals. You can also feel if the leaves below you are dry, wet, etc so you know if they will make noise, you will know if a stick will crack, etc

couldn't you just wear shoes and walk slower

and i don't need bare feet to know if leaves are wet or dry anon

the stick cracking thing is valid, but it also works with moccasins which i suggested earlier, or soft soled hunting boots like the maine hunting shoe, which I also have a pair of.

and both of those then let you chase the deer after you shoot it without cutting your feet open or keep your toes from freezing off

It was 20 years before it happened and it can't happen anymore because I ground off the spikes. Why live your life in fear that you may pull a gate with spikes on it over your bare feet, there are hundreds of thousands of things more likely to happen to you than that.

and because they were working rented land they had no control over what they planted. The crop and even cultivar were dictated by the wealthy land owners and the lumper was the highest return per acre which is why it was the only variety grown

anyway no other staple storage crop is suitable for ireland. If they'd re planted every acre of potato with wheat half the country would still have starved

and the vast majority of potato crops in the us (and globally) are still highly sussceptible to blight, thats why we loose a little over six billion USD a year in crop loss and disease control

dont talk blight with me boy, this shit is my life

I walk barefoot whenever I get the chance, I just like it better than stuffing my feet in socks and shoes. Your feet will get cold even in mild temperatures though, especially at night. Easy to lose heat to the ground with nothing to insulate the direct contact. My feet just never feel quite right in shoes, even when they fit as perfectly as possible I still feel the tightness and weight of having a slab of rubber strapped to my foot. Also my feet always feel a little sweaty, but mesh shoes like roshe's help with that.

I usually take my shoes off when i arrive at camp to let my feet and shoes dry out. then i dust my feet off before getting into tent. Or sometimes after river crossing take shoes off and walk barefoot until feet dry enough to put back in shoes. It does feel nice once in a while
>>
>>632253
>couldn't you just wear shoes and walk slower

going barefoot helps you to walk slower though.

>and i don't need bare feet to know if leaves are wet or dry anon

depends, in my area there are some leaves that my look wet but crackle a lot when stepped on. When barefoot i like to know if they're wet on top and dry underneath by putting my foot there.

>the stick cracking thing is valid, but it also works with moccasins which i suggested earlier, or soft soled hunting boots like the maine hunting shoe, which I also have a pair of.

>and both of those then let you chase the deer after you shoot it without cutting your feet open or keep your toes from freezing off
I wear medieval reenactment turnshoes if I'm hunting in the winter. They keep my feet warm and I can feel the ground. If it's winter I'm obviously not going to go barefoot; that would be stupid. And when you shoot deer you generally don't chase after them, I wait for 20 minutes for them to bleed out then track them.
>>
>>632718
This. fitizen here. Any vans or wide bottomed/flat shoe with some active inserts (like Dr scholls) with plastic to support your arch is invaluable for carrying shoulder loads long distance. It's like your gripping the earth rather than just walking on it. Boots are a little too unnatural imo to find your balances quickly

I.e. a running shaped shoe is bad for balance, esp innawoodlin. Unless you just wanna squat some cairns or something.

>>630013

LOL I hate to break it to you but it still does happen all the time, even in industrialized nations. Worms are literally everywhere in the soil, and are pretty likely to be the most numerous animals on the entire planet. Some only infect specific species, some are opportunistic, and some infect a wide variety of species. You roll the dice every time you expose your skin to it, and your feet are no different.
Just because you haven't realized you have a parasite yet doesn't mean you don't and that other people shouldn't worry about it. They are very real and cause lots of medical problems. Sometimes they can take decades to grow out one stage of their life cycle and cause a noticeable infection.
>>630016

As somebody who has taken multimile hikes barefoot, going /out/ barefoot is stupid as fuck unless you know the terrain like the back of your hand. And that is assuming you don't run into broken glass some ignorant twat has left all over the campsite. The only reason I do it at all is to toughen up my feet.
>>
You need to toughen up your underfoot with soft different safe surfaces before handling wilderness. One year of casual daily barefoot walks will get your feet ready for an expedition. Walking on concrete and rocky surfaces is good for it. It's all about going slow at it. But you must understand that you cannot avoid bruising your feet in the process of making toughening the underfoot. If you can bare the pain, you can walk the bear.
Enjoy !

Shoes alter your gait, posture, basically the way that you would walk naturally without them. If you have tough skin and good agility you can hike many places barefoot. Injun tribepeople do it all the time in all the places.
>>
>>629844
It isn't cultural. I am from a southern European country and my grand father didn't wear shoes till he entered in the army at 18yo because he was poor. Only due to that.
Only rich people at the time could get shoes so it was a privilege. Don't bring me the cultural thing, at least in Europe. Maybe some tribes in the world do it, don't know.

I had minor persistent infections on both of my big toes for years. Not bad enough to spread and consume my body but enough to swell the skin along the edge of the nail and cause the nail to become brittle and disintegrate on the same side.

Going without closed shoes has allowed it to heal. I'm fucked when I have to wear them again though I guess.

This person is wrong, leather armor is shit for stabs or cuts, it was just cheap and mostly homemade. What they used to do was put on layer and layers, to stop cuts. If you've ever tried to rip layers of leather then you'd know how hard it was. It works this way because cuts displace more of the armor in question, so the leather (being flexible) offers more resistance. tl;dr leather armor is shit and for poor people.
