this worth it? Would fix the turn signals, windshield, fuel tank, and mirrors as long as the frame/forks are in good shape and the engine is good. fairings and scuffs I don't really care about.

Yeah its a good deal, idk why people think bikes are completely totaled once they have been dropped once, put a new side cover on it, fix the other little things and its instantly worth more than twice what you paid for it. just say its never been dropped for the whole time you owned it.

>TL;DR help me find a beginner bike that won't depreciate like crap and will fit a big guy

>long version

I'm in a strange situation, and I want y'alls advice (I'd make my own thread but you guys will see it easier here)

I'm 20, and working full time making a decent living. I'm looking to build credit so I can look to buy a house in 5-6 years, and one of the best ways to do so is a vehicle loan, and paying off credit cards on time.

That said, I own two cars outright, and I am not looking to buy another. However, I love bikes and miss the old XR75 my grandparents let me use on their property back when I was a kid.

That got me thinking of getting a motorcycle to quench that proverbial thirst and paying it off to build credit, then riding it for awhile longer and eventually selling.

But I'm just not sure if that's exactly a financially smart decision, since I don't know the market for beginner bikes, or what their depreciation is.

Regardless, I was looking at getting a YZF-R3 since I'm a larger bloke (6'2" and 200lbs) and they seem to have the best response with my fat ass.

Is buying a bike a good way to build credit and learn, and which sub $6,000 beginner bike would you choose if that was your goal?

>TL;DR help me find a beginner bike that won't depreciate like crap and will fit a big guy

I've considered it, but I'd wonder how I'd get a loan for it. I will only purchase a vehicle or large ticket item if I already have the cash, but this is for the purpose of building credit. So, more research in the loan department me thinks.

they can all be restricted then de restricted when you are confident in your ability rather than having to buy a new bike, a restricted ninja 650 makes 45 horsepower for an example.
being not a manlet the bike will be more comfortable for you too, 650's all have less aggressive ergonomics.

honestly 650 is a good beginner bike, anything more is too much power for a learner, but a 650 is perfect. Still gives you power and speed, and depending on the weight of the frame good stability.

250's are dumb to learn on, as once you have had enough you go right to the 1000cc and the power difference is too much, especially on rural roads

The only 250 I would ever recommend is a VTR250, because they are fucking dope to commute on

If you have to question whether you can handle a 650 or not, you may want to stay away from streetbikes in general

Most of the 650cc/lowend middleweight bikes are renown for their smooth power delivery and beginner/commuter friendly suspensions/brakes/ergonomics. What you really need to keep in mind is the engine layout and the type of bike it's on rather than displacement. An fz07 has more displacement than an r6(600cc), but the r6 is the faster bike. They're also completely different with how they deliver power. The fz07 will be smooth through the rev range as they make their torque fairly early on, whereas an r6 or other sportbike makes all their torque and power near the end of the rev range like a car with a fatass turbo

Also keep in mind that a bike will only go as fast as you twist your wrist and make it. Don't be a dumbass and you won't have any problems

>>
I just noticed this,

a 300 is more forgiving when you are learning throttle control if that is what you are trying to ask, cutting some throttle half way through a corner on a 300 isnt really ever going to cause you a huge problem, doing that on a 650 could cause you to highside though.

In saying that a restricted 650 is less exciting power wise than an r3 is simply because of how much more they weigh.
>>
>>15398690
a 500 is essentially just a nutted 650, may as well get a 650 and restrict it, cb500 for an example.
better off getting a cb650 and putting a restrictor on it and having the option to make the thing more powerful.

Anon a year or two on 650, and you will feel as though you're bike is a 125 with a blown rear tire. Gradual build up is fine, but if you want to ride 3-4 bikes before you hit the 1000cc you're going to be spending an absolute bucket load

Bikes are expensive to maintain and the gear is pricey as well, which you'll be constantly upgrading. Combined with tools and stands etc

a 650 holds it value very well, as opposed to a 250 or 300 and so the ability to upgrade when you are comfortable is easy and cheaper

Honestly though go out and get your license first, then start testing. Spend a few months going around to bike yards and throw you're leg over. Ask to ride it around the lot, and ask if they have tester insurance then take it for a quick burn

You'll soon see if 650 is right for you. Trust me when I say you are going to get bored of a 250, if you do anything other than commute

Please don't listen to the guy saying "get a street triple" because it's a retuned Daytona 675 supersport without the plastics and you'll smear yourself. An R3 will do you fine. Enough power to satisfy (I can break every speed limit in my state in third gear) but not enough that it'll fuck you over if you hamfist the throttle or whatever. Light, too.

yes, I am hesitant. I want a fairly sporty, inexpensive commuter bike I can sell in two years and not completely lose my ass on, hence, R3.

Bikes aren't my hobby. Cars are. That said, I want to learn to ride well and get my M1, since it seems like every other week a buddy or coworker is trying to offload an old dirt bike or street bike at shit cheap prices, and I'd like to tool around with them, but I also need to build my credit: R3.

Dont! Go with your plan and get a 300 or r3. are you going to take advice from people on here who dont own motorcycles?

I'm basically on the same boat as you, I will be getting an R3 despite some coworkers telling me a GSXR 750 is a good bike to start.

Honestly, I want something light and fun to ride, not some fucking beast that sucks insurance money like crazy and more than likely get me in trouble cause of my inexperience.

Fuck it, watch some YouTube vids on the R3 and get it. That's what I'm gonna do as soon as I find one affordable one.

Yeah I'd say you're doing the right thing, a GSXR750 would be a bit much for a first bike. At least with the R3 being a twin, it's easy to get the grips of, so you can focus more on riding.

I don't even understand people getting mad at tailgaters.
>>
>>15398841

I get mad at tailgaters as being rear ended is probably one of the most common accidents for motorcyclists.

That being said, if anybody is riding my ass whilst I ride my bike, I just drop a gear and disappear.
>>
>>15398841
Not wanting to get rear ended, idk why its hard for people to understand the 3 second rule
>>
>>15398841
can't say it really happens much to me, I would say 95% of the time I travel faster than any other traffic on the road and filtering is legal here.

The only time I really get CLOSE is sort of gridlock moving at a speed too fast to be splitting but a bit too slow to be nice and open road to lane weave, even then it's usually easy enough a situation to get out of with no road rage.

I ride a street triple and while it is easy to ride once you have some experience I wouldn't want to learn the basics on one, especially the R model which is the one to buy.
The throttle response is aggressive, the brakes are strong and the usually mounted tires require temps to feel good that a beginner will not reach.
And 106hp on a bike that light is fairly rapid, whack the throttle in a turn and you will go down.

Had a great time riding today. Mechanic diagnosed a faulty front blinker, perhaps saving me trouble in the future. Bought one of those alarm lock thingies because 2001-era bike. Also did some errands and thus forgot to ask about side bags. I'll hopefully get my paycheck on Friday and then I'll get some.

Generally improved my understanding of the machine a little more, stalled twice but both times half-expected it, tested out the limits of the clutch starting on slopes. Almost filtered once, but got scared because of desolate eastern-bloc roads.
