Labor has no majority in the Senate, it'll never go through. They've only proposed this law because they're losing waves and waves of votes, they've got less than 5% support left. They've proposed this law to get some Green voters on their side - but it backfired massively because nobody wants all electric cars because they're too expensive. Everybody had a good laugh, Labor lost some more votes, everything's back to normal.

But there won't be any greater risk associated with driving when there are more autonomous cars. And the risks are what determine insurance prices, not the perception of risk by the general population. The insurance companies will still be making money.

>>
>>15020180

How about this...

Computers make less mistakes than the average person behind the wheel
>>
>>15020170
The risk of them causing an accident is no greater than it is today. Not everyone who drives will cause accidents. And because the robots are doing such a good job, the risk of anyone being in an accident will decrease.

Well in that sense you're right. Computers will never create a mistake but they will execute the shit out of a mistake they were ordered to do. Also it doesn't even have to be a mistake coded it, it could be multiple instructions coalescing at once into something that causes the computer to miscalculate etc etc this is why computers crash. Also hardware failures are a complete different beast than software failures.

This entire argument is baseless, people enjoy having personal freedom to travel when and where they please. Electric cars? Sure. Automated cars? At least in the United States, a car is seen as a step toward personal independence. We will not see a majority of automated cars in our lifetime, not least because the technology is still zygotic. People like being in control of their possessions.
>>
>>15020227
My (quite progressive) parents are saying cars won't be possessions in the future, you'll just lease them, pay a company to use their transport services.
>>
>>15020227
>People like being in control of their possessions.
Of course! This is why people would rather have automatic cars, and electronic to replace them, and cruise control in their cars, and GPS and shit, and other shit!
>>
>>15020210
Very true, I doubt the code will be thoroughly checked and will have horrid bugs that will cause the car to do all sorts of unexpected behavior.
>>
>>15020196
That could be remedied by proper training and certification instead of a system that lets you get licensed in your mom's auto camry and then go out hooning in a manual WRX (and then stall in an active intersection trying to do a burnout because you don't know how to car and saw tokyo drift once)

but muh freedom
>>
>>15020239
Why would anyone choose the less convenient option? Having personal transport is extremely convenient. It's what the infrastructure of the USA has been built around. If we are talking from a public safety standpoint, leasing a car from a company is just as dangerous as owning one, so that's not really solving anything.
Cab services and Uber and shit exist already, as do ZipCar and other quick rental services. They aren't threatening the existence of the car as a personal possession.

It's a dream scenario because good luck getting funding for such an overhaul, let alone the upkeep. I don't think you understand how massive of an operation that would be. And when a pod breaks down in the middle of North Dakota hundreds of miles from the nearest anything? What about people intentionally disrupting the service? Who would pay for electrified pod service to every single address when a cheap ass strip of tarmac does the same job, and shifts the cost of transportation to the person who wishes to be transported?
It's the solar roadways thing again - a nice idea but when you examine it, it has insurmountable obstacles. Not only is the technology not there, but even the desire to fund such a thing based on marginal possible improvements to...what? Safety? And don't say environment because setting up that system alone would take so much more material and fossil fuel to make than it could ever possibly save.

TL;DR - It's not feasible.

You're moving to extremes. Knowing where you're going is not an integral part of DRIVING A CAR. Being able to shift gears is not an integral part of DRIVING A CAR.

Here's a classic argument. Modern passenger jet planes are able to take off, fly to the destination, and land all on auto-pilot. Would you get on a plane with no pilot? Would you get into a taxi that showed up with no driver?
Would you trust the system so much that you'd let it drive you down a highway at 75mph, merging lanes, avoiding traffic or other obstacles in the road, stopping at intersections, handling a roundabout properly, yielding and pulling into traffic at the right pace?
Driving is incredibly complex, and technology will have to move a lot further before I would be comfortable allowing a computer to decide for me when the best time to pull a left turn on a busy street would be.

Let's flip it around. Say you know where you want to go, how to get there, how to start the car, how to shift gears, and how to use the pedals. If you cannot steer, you aren't going fucking anywhere. Does that make sense?
>>
>>15020408
Yes. So what. Remove all control of a car from the driver except steering the wheel? That sounds like too much automatization for me.

Also:
>"Would you get into a taxi that showed up with no driver?"

There are already working prototypes of that
>>
>>15020425
>Yes. So what. Remove all control of a car from the driver except steering the wheel? That sounds like too much automatization for me.

Sounds like exactly what an automatic car with electric ignition and a gps system is right now. Do you call that driving?
>>
>>15020440
Also lets keep in mind cruise control is for keeping a constant speed and doesn't work in any other condition so that's a moot point.
>>
>>15020440
you still have to push the pedals
>>
>>15020446
ok great - pedal pushing and steering are what you consider driving. Let's come back to the original argument, which is most people would prefer to be in control of steering their two ton metal box that is flying down the highway at high speed with them, their significant other, children, dragon dildos, etc etc in the back. You're proving my original point anon.

Except it is. Electric vehicles are super simple, even when you consider all the other parts. The only thing complicated would be the code but why the fuck would you poke in there for? And if you do want to get into that, wait for aftermarket controllers.
>>15020596
Even considering all the other parts, the elimination of two complicated, failure prone parts (engine and transmission) would vastly improve reliability.
>>
>>15020609
Manufacturers are closing off their systems more and more, until no user-serviceable part remains.
>>
>>15020609
I can get behind electric cars. I cannot get behind mandatory electric cars. They won't because then they can't shame people and companies and tax them for breathing.
>>
>>15021233
It's not getting naturally warmer though, it's getting artificially warmer because of our industrial emissions (and the emissions from cows surprisingly). It's just going to keep getting warmer.

It would have a big reducing effect on greenhouse gas emissions if other developed nations followed the Dutch. I don't even know why you chose to write that in ebonics, black people don't drive electric cars.

I'm Dutch, and fuck my fucking country.

I wish I could move to the US, where I don't have to pay 140 euros a month in taxes and insurance for a fucking 2000 316i, and 1,50eur for a litre of petrol

It's a great time to be an enthusiast if you like old cars and live in a place that isn't ninny-nanny batshit insane.
>>
>>15021520
it isnt
name one thing guns are useful other than harming living things
>>
>>15021520
Are you stupid? Guns were invented for killing and most are designed with killing in mind with the exception of uncommon niche application guns like my .22lr target pistol. That's why the right to bear arms is a great thing, an armed citizenry capable of defending itself is less likely to be taken advantage of or having its rights removed/suppressed.

This is not /o/ related though...

Practice shooting. Competition. Engineering development

Now tell me a single thing related to cars that in no way can be dangerous for humans in its execution.

>>15021711
Guns were in fact invented for killing. But that doesn't mean that the ONLY thing they do is killing.

what

of course they are dangerous, but thats not the point a car's objective is not to kill
>>
>>15023632
>practicing to be better at killing
Now That's implication without basis and strawman.

>seeing who is better at killing
See above

>kill things more effectively
See above

>of course they are dangerous, but thats not the point a car's objective is not to kill

Doesn't matter. Cars kill. There is no need for anyone to have a car that is even capable of exceeding the speed limit and there are more people who die while driving drunk than from gun accidents. We should ban fast cars instead since they are death machines and there would be less deaths.

Car competitions are only for dumb temporary entretainment anyways. The competitions are harmful for the enviroment, drain money that can be used for more important things, and is a risk to the security of everyone involved.

Meanwhile, trucks are cheap as fuck. Keep in mind, all of these are fully loaded, already grey imported for you, and include an LPG (propane) installation that practically doubles your gas mileage. It's this or a base-spec 3 series.

Isn't that just for "work" vehicles, which for some reason can dodge the majority of taxes?

And a fuckhueg truck wouldn't work in the city anyway, there's just not enough room. I'd rather something a bit more sporty and a bit smaller.
>>
>not long ago I considered emmigrating to the Netherlands

Glad I fucking didn't now

The Netherlands is fucking tiny, and it is only one country. You can walk across the whole country in a day. Why the fuck do you need cars? Move to the USA or something if it's that important to you.
>>
>>15023667
>gunfag this mad
Its pretty funny how hard you are grasping at straws and doing false equivalences
Guns were designed to kill, cars didnt, they are nothing alike

Dutch tax lawyer here, It doesn't work like this sunnyboy.

Pay used car import tax based on CO2 emissions and a % off depending how many months have passed.

If you import a used and damaged vehicle into Holland there are more deduction methods, deduction for repair costs and general depreciation.

Upkeep on electric trains is far lower than on diesel/dieselelectric trains. Average time in service before replacing the motors is around 20 years and they run around a million miles a year. Diesels travel much less, much slower. Oldest locomotive type in service in Switzerland is from the 60s and mostly run on well-maintained but original motors. They still serve some half million miles a year each.

That being said, such a ban is retarded in case an alternative fuel is found that can be used in combustion engine cars. The Audi e-diesel for example, made 100% from renewable energy, water and CO2. Theoretically it could be just as efficient as charging an electric car, but it works with current generation cars too. It's simply diesel, synthesized through electrochemical processes.

The vote at this stage has only passed through the lower house of parliament in the Netherlands. It also needs to be approved by the Dutch senate to become legally binding,

Engine and transmission are not the most failure prone parts. Go look at your local scrap yard, 90% of the cars in there probably drove in under their own power, or could have if they wernt crashed.
