My Honda cm450e won't start after running fine for months. Petcock is set to on, killswitch is on, plenty of gas in the tank, pulled the choke all the way out. The big bitch won't start no matter what I do. I checked the plugs and they seem fine, cleaned them up a little bit and slapped them back in there. Battery seems fine since all of my lights are working perfectly. Sounds exactly like it does when I try to start it with the killswitch set to off.

Anyone have any advice? I really don't want to have to take it to a mechanic.

Pulled out just the right plug and tested it and got no spark whatsoever. I also got a stupid amount of probably toxic fumes in my face. What does this mean?

it means your ignition is faulty. so either your switch is on, or your CDI box is faulty.

also those fumes are gas so you know your fueling is ok.

see how black the top of the plugs are? that's all carbon. that's why you were only getting spark from the middle of the plug.

>>

So should I just use less choke? I usually pull it about 3/4 of the way out when I start up the bike otherwise it kind of fizzles out. Then I'll close it entirely about a minute into my ride.

Or just thread them in a couple threads
>>
>>15008726
you should close them up, but you can just stuff some paper towel in the hole.
>>
>>15008726
plugs are fine, stuff the holes with a paper towel just in case. you might want to jump the bike next time you start up, since you may have drained the battery doing the dead cranks. even though your lights are on, the battery can be too low to charge the solenoid, run the starter, and spark.

It's fucking EZ m8. To lean them out all you'll need is a drill, a wood screw, and some pliers.

There should be a little round circle of metal with a hole in the middle where this screw is on your carbs. Just drill into it a bit, screw the screw into it, then use the pliers to pull it out and turn the flathead screw in between 1/2 and 1 turn. Do the same for the other one and bam, carbs leaned out.

>>
>>15008713
as for leaning the carbs, this usually entails going to a smaller jet and making the needle thinner i think. your carbs just dont go rich over time. if the problem is persistent, it might help to run a hotter grade plug instead in the meantime, since that's a cheap option.
>>
>>15008773
you're talking about bypassing the EPA plug and setting the idle mix. like, yeah, it'll help at idle, but not at all during midrange and wide open throttle.
>>
>>15008759
whens the last time you cleaned your airfilter and verified the choke turns on and off correctly?
both can cause a bike to richen up and foul plugs if left unchecked.
>>
>>15008793
Unless his carbs somehow rejetted themselves to go way more rich than they should it's probably just a thrown out idle A/F mixture. A lot of 80s bikes had really fucking idle mixtures anyway.

Fuck, my GS300 needed about 4 full turns out on the idle A/F screw to avoid flooding out on days colder than 80 degrees.

Yeah gonna be a trackday-only-bro. Might get a DRZ for fuckin around downtown. But a dedicated off road only baiku would be fun, I love the idea of backpacking out in the middle of nowhere for a few days

why is the rear tyre 150/70-17?
front is 110/70-17?
fuck thats tall for such thin tyres.
>>

My guess is they were aiming for a Ninja 300/CBR300/R3 type bike.

Ninja 300's have a 140 section rear tyre iirc.

Personally id say dedicated off road is the only way to go, riding off road is more fun and if you get a drz for both you will just end up regretting not getting a lighter/more powerful dirt bike in a few months.

In saying that, its a drz, you wouldnt lose any money on it if you decided you want something else in a few months time.

Idk.
recommending dirt bikes is honestly tarded, only you know what you want.

Serious question.
Are Harleys for some reason unable to maintain idle? Is the average Harley rider unaware of the existence of an idle screw? Is there some excuse for Harley riders to act like cunts at red lights?

They bought a bike that's more than twice as expensive as a Honda/Suzuki/Kawasaki/Yamaha cruiser with similar performance and features, and have a third of the reliability.

What do you think?

Some Harley riders are just assholes who like to rev their loud bikes at stoplights so everyone looks at them, it probably gives them some sort of self-importance in their otherwise miserable and meaningless lives.

>DRZ maintenance schedule

>between 400cc and 660cc
>Capable of highway riding and commuting
>about AUS$5,000
DRZs have a maintenance schedule I can afford but can't do the sort of dirt riding I want to do very well.
WR450s and whatnot can do the tight single track stuff I want to do but have stupid maintenance schedules that I can't afford.
Currently riding a DR650 and it's fucking shit for dirt riding. However I need the maintenance schedule to be maintained.

they're quite rare.

I can find FXDs everywhere but i dont like chrome
SBs are out of budget and quite impractical for what they are
FXDWG is shit, because i dont like the rake on it
FXRs are too old
Oh, also it needs to have a 1450 engine, because i can't get insured on anything above.

XL883 and XL1200 are too small a tank and just generally too small.

So FXDX or FXDXT are the only options really.
