I'm driving a 2.5 TDi V6 Audi A4. The last garage I took it to was talking about who ever changed the timing belt last did a shitty job as it's meant to be set up though VAGCOM, and theres a bunch of tipex on the tensioners and belt, implying he didn't set it up by computer and just did it by eye.

The car drives exactly the same as before I had the belt changed. Should I be worried or is the other garage just talking shit?

Are there any decent diesel engines that can be swapped into Foxbody Mustang? By decent I mean reliable with good fuel economy like the WG 1.9TDI. Are engine swaps even worth the trouble in Europe? Are they even legal on cars that didn't have them before?

I just did the rear brake pads and rotors on my girlfriends jeep liberty and I think I fucked up somewhere.

I got on the highway to go home and after driving 65mph for about a minute it started to vibrate badly. Badly enough that I had to slow down and as soon as I tapped the brakes the vibration went away instantly. I promptly got off the highway and drive home through town. When I got home I made sure all the lug nuts were tight with a torque wrench to make sure it wasn't a loose wheel.

They also seemed really hot when I got home. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. They weren't smoking or anything.

So I wanna buy a C4 Vette since they're at their cheapest now and I want something that'll be fun without too much work to be put into it. Unfortunately, my area is filled with jews and boomers, so picking are slim unless I wanna pay out the ass. Most of the cheap and decent ones are automagics, and so far I've found only one manual.

The problems are basically:
A: I've never driven and manual and don't know if I want to kill this one's tranny learning
B: Most of my driving's gonna be stop and go traffic since I'm gonna daily this thing

I'm aiming specifically for 85-89 because of the interior, even is the engine isn't as nice as the later models. As a result, if I get the only manual, not only will I pay 9 grand instead of 5-6, it'll also be the 4 speed instead of a 6. Is it really worth the extra cash to shell out for the manual, especially given my usual driving route?
>>
>>14919335
Alot of people say you should go for manual no matter what, but I don't think thats reasonable. I bought my 78 C3 in 3 speed auto, sure it leaves something to be desired but it doesn't mean I don't love my car. I use it as my daily driver as long as it isn't raining and I love it. Learning manual isn't that hard, and I doubt you do any damage while learning, and start and stop traffic isn't that bad in a manual unless its in the city. I don't think it should be that much of a price difference for a manual, but keep in mind there should be other things to look for that are more important than manual vs auto when looking at your first vette.

Is the "ground" connection on a car the same all over?

In other words, if I "ground" some wire on the metal from my trunk, is it the same ground as grounding something to the engine block?

How does Ruf get away with a manufacturers designation when they just put bodykits on Porsches?

Bomex can't put some horseshit front lip on an 88 CRX and it's magically registered as a 2016 "Bomex Fagbutt Attack Series Gold R GT-R Type R Turbo R Spec R model "

I'm hammered but explain this faggotry and don't give me that "they change a certain percentage of the car and German manufacturing standards allows a new manufacturing title".

Because they don't.

>I'm hammered

Oh. Fuck off, then.
>>
>>14921933
RUF is a registered manufacturer. Their cars are sold as RUFs not Porsches.

RWB is just a glorified nippon stancefag
>>
>>14921951
>Their cars are sold as RUFs not Porsches.

To a maximum of 500km on the odo. As in, if you bought a new Porsche, but want it converted to a...say Turbo R, it'll be a Ruf, as long as it's below 500km. Above that, it'll be a Ruf tuned Porsche.

Just to be anal.
>>
>>14921951
Yes I know that. I was implying that what that person thinks RUF does is actually what RWB does.
>>
>>14921976
Ahh didn't know that, I thought RUF bought new Porsches and remanufactured before ownership. Didn't know you could give them your used car.

How do they stack up against the other tuners like gemballa, 9ff and others?

They're my favorite just because of yellowbird.

>>14921980
Gotcha, very true
>>
>>14922000
>I thought RUF bought new Porsches and remanufactured before ownership.

They receive a shell and an engine block from Porsche. That's a "genuine" Ruf, if you will. But you do have the option to get your shiny new Porsche converted into a Ruf.

They really do everything, though.
Hell, you can give them a 964, have it restored to mint by them, then converted into a BTR. With the difference that it'll be designated a tuned Porsche 964, not a Ruf BTR.

Awesome company.

What's the cheapest Automatic Transmission Fluid I can get for my 2008 Honda Accord? Everyone says get OEM fluid, but it's a little pricey, since I need to get quite a few quarts of the thing. It's almost the same price as if I let a shop do it that I know uses OEM ATF.
>>
>>14922011
>>14922000
>How do they stack up against the other tuners like gemballa, 9ff and others?

They don't just give the cars all the power a turbo can squeeze out of a 3.8. They make the cars powerful, but insanely reliable.

9ff, especially with the bigger tunes, are just a nightmare. Many owners say they have the cars in the garage more than at home. But that's what you get, when you want 1200hp.
Techart is supposed to be a pretty good Porsche tuner, too.
Gemballa is just fuck.

say i tune my car, lets just say it is a ferd shitstang. Say for whatever reason i need to claim warranty, i don't know, my air compressor blew up, the issue is my car is tuned. I hear that reverting it back to stock and driving 50-100 miles will remove traces of the tune to dealer level equipment. How true is this and how much trouble will dealerships on average go through to prove you warranty was voided.

Is it bad to ride the clutch if only to move up a car length in bad traffic?

what's the best way to move up a car length? 100 hp shitbox
>>
using motul 5.1 brake fluid for the clutch line is a bit over kill, is it not?

>>
Steering wheel is jerking/fighting vwhen I turn, though it gets better as the drive goes on.

Belt was a bit loose so I replaced it. But it was still acting up. Mechanic said rack and pinion, so I reluctantly did it. And it worked, briefly. Now it's doing it again and I was told the power steering pump needs to be replaced. So I did it and it did nothing, in fact my check oil light is even on now. Now I'm being told to again replace the rack and pinion.

Google says CV joint, but when I brought it up the mechanic says that has nothing to do with steering. But.. It does, doesn't it?

What should I do? Listen to the mechanic or what? Any idea as to what could be causing this problem?
>>
>>14925077
>Is it bad to ride the clutch if only to move up a car length in bad traffic?
you'll probably stall if you don't, thats what its there for

riding the clutch and ruining the clutch happens at higher speed when the friction is so much greater.

If you are swapping a diesel into a mustang, it would only be worth it if it made it faster and cooler, because it's bound to be a major project. Your best chance of a painless swap would be a Ford powerstroke from a truck, maybe a 6 cyl high displacement Cummins. Don't go with a nutless and gutless 1.9 anything, it's not worth it senpai.

99 Camry, have a humming noise coming from under the hood, mainly when it's above freezing and only when going at a constant speed. Accelerating or letting off stops the noise. Looking around other forums it seems that it's probably caused by the differential, but not clear on if it's the fluid or more of a structural issue. Any input?

What do air intake mods do?
Do you have to buy new springs to lower a car?
>>
>>14932553
Air intake mods theoretically will take in colder air than stock air boxes. And usually yes you need new springs and shocks to lower your car, but people also cut the springs on the stock shocks which is dangerous and will blow the shocks in like 2 minutes.
>>
>>14932553
But air intake mods will usually just increase the induction noise, if you dont have mods that need a cold air intake.

How often do you replace wiper blades?

I've owned my car for a year and four months, and when I got it I also got new blades. Now that the rain is water and not snow they've started smearing. Quick googling says every 6-12 months, but e.g. my parents don't need to change them that often. Did I just get shit blades because they're some no-name/generic brand ones?
>>
Rather than start a new thread I figure I can ask here.

I'm looking to buy a vehicle but I got some specific needs and wants.
>Live in the boonies so I need fuel economy to get back and forth from anywhere
>Need 4wd/awd to get to my house and because of the winter climate
>I'm not looking to spend more than $5k used but I will if I need to.

>I would prefer a bit of storage if possible but I'll mostly be carrying me so prefer it not being bigger than it needs to be.
>I'm gonna be my own mechanic so I would prefer it to be actually 'repairable' or at least not 'Remove driver tire to access battery'-like.
>In addition to previous preference I have had nothing but headaches from any car with computerized anything so those are a negative (though this point is likely to be moot anyway)

I will gladly take input on anything that fits that general idea as none of those are a 'MUST' other than fuel economy and 4wd/awd. So far I've come up with Toyota Rav4, and Honda CRV but they tend to be rather pricey and rather heavily computer oriented. I've also looked into Jeeps (Cherokee) but they seem to have a bad reliability rate. desu I'm a little out of my depth here and have no real reference point for how well these vehicles hold up other than generic ratings on car sites and biased praises from fan sites.

I would appreciate it if anyone could point me in a direction that could give me a grounded reference for making a choice.

I just got an old Holley 2300 out of an IHC pickup for free but it needs some work before I can use it. The base plate has a crack in it so I'll be replacing that but it's a really old style with the idle mixture screws in the base plate rather than in the metering block. Any 2300 base plate will fit this but I'm not sure which metering block I'll have to get. Will any old metering block off a double pumper or 2300 work or does it need to be off another 2300 with the same CFM rating? Other than the base plate crack it's a perfect 2300 with a manual choke.

Very hard. Hinges change the spacing of the door and body, you need hours of readjustment to get both sides of the door to seat properly and the reverse wear on the weatherstripping will probably allow moisture into the frame.

Is it a bad idea to move off with no revs (only using the clutch)?

My car only revs to 5000, makes absolutely zero power below 1800rpm and first gear is extremely short. Because of this I pretty much have the choice of either pulling away extremely slowly by letting the clutch out all the way on its own, then accelerating once it is engaged. The other choice is to pull away with the revs above 2000, which just seems antisocially quick, theres no middle ground it seems as it makes the same power at 1000rpm as it does at 1700rpm for example.

Ruf, like Singer make a TON of custom, home made parts.

They essentially strip the original Porsche down to the bare frame, and work on it from the ground up. That makes it a new car.

Just like Tesla made cars from Lotus frame, and called them their own.

>>
>>14946151
Not particularly but you will burn more fuel.
Going down a hill, most modern cars cut fuel when in gear. Sticking it in neutral, you will make the car idle which will in turn use fuel.

There is also the minor stresses (See: unnesesary use) on the clutch in the case of a manual, and slipping it from N to D in an auto constantly isn't really that good for the transmission

no, your main problem is getting it smogged, since part of the test is a visual inspection of your engine bay and exhaust system. Most smog test workers are dumb as rocks/DGAF tho, so you should be fine as long as it doesn't actually throw your emissions out of the specified range for your vehicle.

>no gas to engine
>engine is now a friction brake

>wear your brakes faster
>implying you should use your brakes while vehicle is in neutral
who says I'm using brakes? The optimum use of this is when you're coming down a big hill and have to go up another one immediately.
ex.
>shift into neutral from top gear on downhill
>speed boost achieved for no extra fuel use
>reach bottom of valley or whatever
>use speed boost to climb, bleed off extra speed
>on uphill climb synchro match into lower gear gear when revs fall to proper level
vs.
>keep it in high gear for downhill
>start giving it gas before bottom of hill reached
>even new vehicles that "don't use gas while coasting" do this automatically
>have to downshift for uphill climb

Is one of the arms bent? If you can't tell, then at least check all the plastic joints for slop - those are like $5 for a box of 10 random/universal bits at any parts place.

There's a guy selling an MR2 near me for $500, but he says it needs a new head gasket. How much does that cost to replace? I've looked on forums, but there's no consensus; its either $1,500 or $100, a wrench and an afternoon.
>>
>>14952937
Head gaskets for my chevy small blocks and big blocks run about 80 bucks for a whole rebuild kit, so expect to pay like 100 for a head gasket for that thing.

I've seen the kits go around for that much, but how much will labor cost?
>>
>>14952964
Not sure, I only buy older chevy and that's all I work on as a hobbyist, I work on Diesel trucks for a living, you should be able to do it all yourself if you have the mindset, if not expect to pay around 300 or so for labor.

Longer than an afternoon. Not really the sort of job for a newb, although you could probably find a tutorial to guide you through it. You need a decent socket set, breaker bar, tension wrench, basically a decent tool set to do the job.
The bigger concern with a car that age is that the alloy head might have gone soft, and then it won't matter how many times you mill the head or replace the gasket, it'll pop again in a few months. Sometimes you can cryogen the head to get it hard again, but usually you'd just source another head... which, because the car is that old, might be just as bad.

If you factor in the price of a changeover head, new timing belt, and VRS (gasket) set (see ebay) then you're getting pretty close to the price, IF you can do the work yourself.

Needless to say that number will be a lot higher than $500

How old does a car have to be considered a shitbox? Would be 99 Corolla be considered a shibox?
>>
>>14953993
1: The condition of the car determines shitbox status
2: see 1
>>
>>14954029
not necessarily. you could have the most immaculate Geo Metro in existence and it would still be a shitbox

What are some general guidelines for getting into local auto groups? I saw a gathering of vehicles today in a local parking lot. It looked like a meetup of some sorts, not a formal car show. It looked like an interesting scene, but how do these people usually act? Almost all of them had sporty looking cars, some riceburners, some muscle, but would I be laughed out of there if all I've got is a metro? They weren't racing or even driving, hell the hoods weren't even open.

Facebook is where I find out about meets.

I might have to add a sub-clause to my rule

I used to work with a guy that concluded "any car I have to work on is a fucking piece of shit"

I liked that rule. Most mechanics do
>>
>>14954427
Find a meet online go to it, talk with the groups find the one you're most chill with.

Where abouts are you at?
>>
>>14954496

North Dakota

I'll probably have to get a facebook account then.

fix your metro, you have the ultimate gokart! rwd the p.o.s. and drop something slightly beefier in.
>>
>>14954453
as a guy who yurns wrenches, i agree. Any time it requires work it is a shitbox.

What do you guys think about this? Has a seemingly bad damage report and the engine was swapped with an LS3 with 40k miles on it.

Body filler
>>
>>14958672
Its gonna be visible, but fuck me if it won't look way better than rust no matter what

Talk me through how you did it, step by step, and what tools/equipment you used

I'm gonna do mine again in a few weeks, this time with the correct color and the goal of making it look OK before selling

Yesterday, I took a grinder and grinded around the well, exposed more rust and some liquid water under the paint. Then sanded around bare metal put some bondo on, sanded that. Put 3 coats of primer on and now im waiting for it to set good then im going to sand it down a tad and then spray paint it. I dont think i taped properly or sanded the body filler enough though seems a bit thick.
>>
>>14958700
Hm... what did you use to grind? As in what type of disc or whatever

Oh wow, that looks rough as fuck

I use flap discs attached to a grinder. First rough, then fine. Leaves the metal very smooth and will remove nearly everything... sadly, my metal was too damaged to get it 100% clean, and as such I've had to do it a couple of times
>>
>>14958612
You need to sand the filler more and taping it like that when you paint is going to make it a pain to wet sand.
>>
do american cars still suck

>>14958748
Ah. Yeah i probably ruined it lol.

Why do gasoline powered cars need a transmission while electric cars just have a linear acceleration?
>>
I have a 1983 BMW 528e, and last week or so the transmission was acting strange. Basically, neutral acted like it was in drive and reverse acted like it was in park. Everything else was normal, later that day, the car seemed to have fixed itself, despite being a bit weak when in first gear.

The next day however, only reverse would work, if I REALLY pounded the gas, the car would move very slightly in all other gears (except park of course)

Any ideas? I've been told it's a selector cable or something, I'd be happy to give more details.
