1997 automatic Miata went up today in my area for 3500 bucks...its automatic and has a hard top. I figure I'll go look at it because at least I could sell the hard top on Craigslist and then resell the car. I've never driven an auto and want to see if they are really shit.

It was at a shitty little dealer in a bad part of town. Had dents all over it. The hardtop was actually some sort of fiberglass bondo shit sprayed over a softtop with a glass cracked rear window and then SCREWED into the back of the car. Engine bay was super clean but it's not like the guy couldn't pressure wash it easy.

Put my hand on the underside of the oil pan and my entire hand was covered in wet oil. Knew I didn't want it but took it out anyway. Sitting at a stop, the whole front end shook. There was carpet over the dashboard and Elks Lodge stickers all over the windshield. Brakes were garbage. Was probably as gutless as a Geo Metro. Had winter tires on the back and summers on the front. The casette player had the little door ripped off and the power windows made a terrible sound. The whole car lurched going from second to third gear.

Flipup headlights worked great though.

Told the guy I didn't want it.

"WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET YOU TO BUY THIS CAR? THE NADA VALUE ON THIS IS 6 GRAND I KNOW WHAT I GOT IF I FIX ANYTHING THE PRICE IS ONLY GOING TO GO UP"

The oil is leaking.

IT MIGHT NOT BE THE OIL FOR ALL YOU KNOW THAT COULD BE THE TRANSMISSION LEAKING ONTO THE OILPAN

"How about you put 3 grand worth of work into this thing and then sell it to me for 1 grand"

HOW ABOUT YOU GET OUT OF MY SHOP

Are the 1997 automatics really all that bad or was that just a piece of shit?

But you won't believe me, and you have no reason to. But I'm going to pass a judgement call anyway: don't get a miata. Not an NA, not an NB. Miata's are some of the easiest cars to research BUT you have to put some thought into it (as with anything) and if you're showing that you're not ready to put the bare bones 10% effort. I like hard dog, they're the cheapest, have a shit ton of options, and have been proven time and time again by thousands of miatas. They'll fit softtops, hardtops no problem.

Blackbird is the new hotness and while they are "the best" they are also the most expensive by far and to do it right you need to travel to his shop for the install.

If money and time is no issue, and you have to have a perfect fit with your head/helmet, blackbird it is.

Gonna be selling my red one soon, want to move up to a WRX or a Corvette C5 but the market sucks for both right now - If I was into C4s, I'd be having a much easier time with this.

I hate to leave the Miata game. Maybe I'll get an NC, but I've had it with the scene. It's been loads of fun, and I've taken it on 20k miles worth of road trips in the 1.5 years I've owned it. I just need something more substantial and useful.

It's complicated - I'm in Utah AND Texas equally often. I usually buy my cars in TX since no rust and better prices.

Depending on the C4, I might consider it, but I feel that they look too shitboxy. A C5 is timeless while a C4 is not.

The WRX scene isn't much better, as anything less than $10k is ragged out, salvage title, or worse.

I have actually, I've created a list of what things I want to do to my own car, and I'll probably create a build thread when I do.

I've only had it for a bit over two months now, so I'm mostly bringing it back up to spec, replacing all the worn or damaged bits before I start doing stuff to it, want to make sure it's working right first.

Then it's just a matter of getting the money together to do the things I want.

this guy here
i figured out what i like about this particular NB, its's the smoked headlights on a dark color, for some reason the stock NB headlights just contrast and clash with the front end too much, but darkening them on a darker color helps immensely, especially on BRG and the dark grey color and black

it seems like dark headlight housings help as well, as well as dark wheels and a black top

Why would you do that if you can do something like pic related instead?

Honestly, all you need from the NB is the engine for that few more HP.
>>

I completely agree, but overwhelmingly owners of both would generally agree that NB's are "slightly" objectively better in pretty much every way, instead of objectively better in every way "by a decent margin" or instead of objectively better in every way "by a huge margin."

I have such a fucking long list of shit to do this spring. 1996 NA with 89K miles.

-Get rusty rockers repaired
-Do timing belt
-Do sensors or whatever's causing my pinging on hot days
-Do plugs and wires
-Fix that one tire with a slow leak I can't find
-Find out why my transmission magically lost its synchros
-Compound and wax everything
-Sell it and buy a Corvette

your ignition timing might have been fiddled with (advanced too far)
try running higher octane and see if the pinging stops

>>14652344
pic related is a jetstream lip, I also like the garage vary lip and the stock sport package lip too on the nb1
>>
>>14652476
I know it has a timing advance, but I was OK running 89 until last summer. Now I'm running 93 and it's starting to ping again.

If I'm lucking maybe the timing's slipped and it's too far advanced now. It's on my checklist.

We postan to-do lists?

-Install hood lifters
-Install motor mounts
-Master/slave cylinder install
-wire fog lights
-swap steering wheel
-fix random squeeks
>>
>>14652492
could be. the pinging could also be caused by carbon deposits in the cylinders. the carbon build up can get red hot and act as an ignition source. metal burrs can cause predetonation for the same reason.

>>14652505
>fix random squeaks

this... I think either my hood hinge or my wiper mechanism is squeaking. if I press on the corner of the hood where it squeaks it goes away. I swear there is a new squeak on this car every day lol.
>>
>>14652558

I mostly fixed my hood squeak by liberally dousing the hood latch with white lithium spray. The spring esp but I went overkill with every facet of each part. 85% gone. On huge bumps it'll make noise but regular driving it's mostly gone.

If you look it up on the forums it's a very common fix for it but as always with these miatas it could be something else. Still, a very cheap thing that may fix your issue.

As much as you people always talk about Miatas nobody here ever said anything about a Miata being in Initial D. Theres a red NA with a hardtop and a yellow NB.

I never realized that first and second gen Miatas are eurobeat anime meme cars. Too bad the NA got wrecked and was driven by a scrub with a scrub team with a super shitty logo that is too ugly to put on my car.

Now I know why you people hold Miatas to the same godliness as AE86

Mazda published a technical service bulletin for this issue, Mazda's solution was to test for excessive axial runout of the wheel/tire assemblies and correct it by dismounting the tire and correcting the runout by rotating the tire on the wheel.

I disliked the NC for the longest time until I saw a lowered NC3 on the road yesterday and now I want one to daily until the ND hits the used market.

I've owned a '91 and currently drive a '99. My best friend owns a '94 and '02.

'02 is overall nicer, feels comparable to the '99 in overall speed, but the '99 is a little more 'light on its feet' and 'quicker'. Truly a toss up, get whichever you can afford.

The NAs are in a different, lower class. The 1.8 is quick, but blown out the water by the '99. The 1.6 is just plain slow, but it does feel a 'little' lighter than the others (especially the NB2).

They're all good folks, you can't go wrong.

Miata engines are pretty robust, it all depends on if you can trust the service history and track owners. I'd take a one owner 130,000 km miata with service history over a 95,000 km one with 3 mystery owners and no service history. You don't need an ironclad encyclopedia but some receipts, notes, anything. Look up the VIN number, that should be step 1 and can tell you some things about the car.

>>
>>14664208

The first thing you have to know is that there is a ridiculous amount of information and support for the miata. Between the NA/NB/NC and now the ND, there are half a dozen huge forums dedicated to everything. So search, read, research, and pour over everything when you need help. When you do ask a questions, most everyone will be friendly and helpful. In fact the miata community is pretty nice compared to other car communities. The only exception is Miataturbo.net, which mainly deals with turbo and forced induction miatas, they can be douches but only if you haven't done your research, and you should do your research if you're thinking about turbo-ing your miata.

Good news:

-shit ton of resources
-they're friendly
-lots of reading and researching material to dive into

Cons
-if you're a dumb redneck, you have to read

The differences in performance is close, but what sold me was that the NB is better at being baby FD RX7. Cause same body designer.

>>

I'd say it's more than "slightly" better but yes, you're not going have 5 second 0-60 time differences. The NB has a way better interior, handles better (replaced the wet noodle chassis, around the same weight for most years), looks better in my opinion, faster in a straight line and so on.

I'm not saying the NA is a bad car but the NB is an option then go with that, if not the NA is fine.

I just got wrecked by a miata in the Walmart parking lot.

>driving down lane, see open spot right at the front
>get close and a cheeky little NA is grinning at me from the space
>god dammit

I couldn't help but laugh, it was just like that picture I'm sure most of you have seen.

Before I used to park in the back of lots due to cunts flinging doors open I'd get this all of the time while sitting in my car parked, you could see people get visibly upset.
>>
>>14668983
I usually try to not pull in so far so people can see my cars ass. I can just imagine some retard smashing into my parked car because he assumed the spot was empty, or someone keying my car because they get butthurt.

Glad you bros like my ride. Ive got a few pics ITT. Its a 99 but damn near every part has been upgraded since i bought it in '09. It runs a 12.8 in the quarter mile and makes 300whp. Built engine and turbo. These little bastards become rediculously fast once you go FI as long as you know what you're doing.

Where are you located? It's also supposed to snow here this weekend. Asking because I need a lot of paint correction, too.
