I'm really tempted to buy a shitbike off of craigslist and replace the steel frame with a titanium one fabbed in my garage. Ti 3-2.5 tube is fairly cheap now.
I've seen some custom Ducati frames people have made that turned out pretty well. Anyone here ever try it?
>>
>>13959249
why would you do that? honestly.
>>
>>13959249
Just cuz it look gud, dont mean it ride gud.

You can build your own frame but are you going to spend the time to figure out how bike dynamics work then design and test different geometries to find an optimized design?
>>
>>13959253
Mostly for practice, partly to satiate curiosity.
I'll be building my own cargo racks out of the stuff either way, and probably a bike frame.

A 28lb~ steel Ducati frame can be replaced with one around 13lbs, and thats nothing to scoff at considering its just the frame itself. Every pound off gets you a little faster, and a little more fuel efficient. For a shitbike hauling around forest roads and trail it could end up worth while.
>>
>>13959249
i've done more fab work and TIG welding than i've seen anyone else do on /o/ in years, and i cant even make a butt joint on titanium that isnt brittle. cant imagine finishing multiple tube junctions and tight crevices. plus you have to know what you're doing with the design or you'll add flex due to the lower young's modulus.

I don't know man, you probably could, but that seems like a dickload of work.
>>
>>13959291
The specific alloy has been really popular with people making bicycle frames for the last decade, so theres a lot of established methodology for working with the material. Lots of argon, watch color and don't let it go anywhere past straw/tan. Though enough argon is supposed to virtually eliminate discoloration all together unless you go out of your way to fuck something up.
Some ti alloys and grades of alloy are easier to weld with than others, 3-2.5 is rated for being relatively easy to work with.

bikes aren't made out of titanium for a reason.

You see when a motorcycle is canted over sideways the suspension is now travelling perpendicular to the road and is nowhere near as effective, this is where chassis flex comes in, it effectively operates as the suspension of the motorcycle when fully leaned over.

Part of the reason why ducati continued to use steel trellis for years after the japs had all moved to aluminium twin spar was because it's incredibly easy to dial in the right amount of flex and steel has lovely flexible, it's also part of the reason why KTM exclusively use steel frames instead of aluminium, they think it makes the suspension work less hard because the less stiff, bouncier steel frames absorb a lot of the impact themselves.

Pic related is a fun quote from colin edwards about the impact REDUCING the stiffness of the frame on the RC51 by 50% made to the bike.
>>
>>13959346
that's pretty fucking fascinating. actually.
>>
>>13959346
I've actually read that before.
My counter points are:
1.) the majority of the flex and how it translates through the bike is due to the geometry of the frame's design itself. Of course the material plays into this though its not the only factor.
2.) I'm not riding a super bike in excess of 100mph, or even 200mph as those riders can reach.
3.) Higher fatigue cycles and greater strength per weight mean I could eliminate any areas on the frame prone to stress failures over time.

I've done a bit of research. Just a bit.

Or build a sport bike from the ground up.

Or smash a sport bike and adventure bike together
>>
>>13958876
I know I'm a faggot but I'd like to get into adventure riding

Here's me
>6 foot 4 inches, 220 pounds
>tons of camping, outdoors, hiking, experience
>Budget of 8k for a used bike
>will be adventure riding in south US + Mexico and more if I can, budget travel, camping
>Will also be riding winding roads in the Texas hill country + offroad practice on friends land

Which bike should I get? I was looking at the 650s and I think they're right for me but I was wondering how easy they are to repair, how much work they'd need if I got say a 2012 model at stock

I would like:
>easy to repair
>parts are easy to find in shops
>easy riding for a tall guy
>not need too many upgrades if I'm buying stock
>>
>>13959389
Looks aren't a factor, It'll get sprayed with some unused Cerakote I have laying around. I've had an itch to try working with the stuff for a long time but never really got around to it. I knew it could be, and has been used in bike frames and some custom motorcycle frames, so I was always curious to attempt it myself. Trying something new and getting practice with an exotic material(exotic for my pleb self anyway) seems fun.

I've got some seamless tube coming in to a friend's shop later in the week that I'll be using to throw together a cargo rack with, and if all goes well a bicycle frame. I've got an old mountain bike from Target with a Chinese mystery steel frame and the thing weighs 40 fucking pounds. Cutting that weight in half would be cool.
Stepping up to copying a motorcycle frame using the material seems like a natural progression. Plus its winter in the great white north and I can't ride anymore so I need to do something motorcycle related or I'll go nuts til spring.

XR650L, DR650, maybe a 650 Dakar/Sertao but the dealer network isn't as large down south. No matter what you buy you will have to spend some money making it comfy for you, especially at your size. I would say don't bother with most of the "adventure" bikes as you will get to see more on a streetable dirt bike than on an adventure bike. Or you could be like this guy and get a Super Sherpa.

V-Strom 650. Cheap, plentiful, cheerful, honest, huge aftermarket. "Must do" mod, if not already done, is a skidplate. Toss a cheap top box and panniers (if it doesn't have 'em already), and you're pretty well set.

Does anyone know a good resource about turbocharging a 90s carbureted sportbike? I'm not looking for five hundred horses. Just to take a 400cc-600cc bike and up the power to weight ratio on a light frame. I would probably stick with a small turbo to get it to spool in the lower rev range.

I've got this nice little scenic loop to cruise around in the summer. Only one section has a fun side to side turn, but I get to stair at bikini bitches and yacht milfs while they mire my revs and braps. $200 boots are the difference between sprained ankles and no sprained ankles in my experience, heck tech 3's are still nothing compared to tech 7's or tech 10's, interestingly enough they make the better boots despite the cheap ones being really good, i wonder why?

I'm saying babby's first boots don't need to be that expensive. If you feel that way why not recommend the Tech 10s from the start? Or even better Sidi Crossfires? The O'neils have enough support to keep you from serious injury. They are clunky but they work.

Because tech 3's are enough for a beginner, i was just thinking about his ankles man, i can tell you right now that if you land a jump to flat ground with those o'neils you will have 2nd and maybe 3rd degree sprains on both your ankles.
at the worst it will be a slight sprain in the tech 3's and in the tech 7 or 10's you would have nearly no chance of a sprain at all.

A ninja 650 is a brisk commuter with 70 horsepower, reasonable suspension and upright ergonomics

They're not similar at all

I've ridden nearly every LAMS bike and I can let you know what is good on your specific budget

Whats up with that engine configuration?
Looks similar to Honda's parallel twin.
>>
>>13959945
CBR400's aren't LAMS approved.

The only 400 class sportbike on the LAMS list is the RVF400 and they're expensive and rare so probably not the best idea for a new rider.
>>
>>13959952
it's a 90 degree v-twin or "l-twin" if you're a pretentious ducati owner.

Cbr400? Never heard of them. The pic looks like a cbr500 which is heavy af
>>
>>13959952
that appears to be the new sv650 which is a V-twin
you can see there's only one exhaust in the front, meaning there's only one cylinder there, the other is concealed in the frame
>>13959949
dbt usually suggest to buy used for your first bike since it's way cheaper and you won't take a considerable depreciation hit as soon as you roll out the dealer with your brand new bike.

Why would the cbr400 not be lams approved when the ktm 390 rc is lams approved?
What about the ktm any opinions on them?
I have assumed unreliable ktm meme with them.

I plan on buying second hand, most bikes worth buying second hand are at least 7 grand though.
>>
>>13959974
the only knowledge i have on those is the rims breaking. but its an indian bike and all the picture were from indian. lets be honest that place doesn't have good roads in any sense of the word and those people are abusive as fuck to their vehicles. so not a really solid basis to judge on.

List me the mainstream 600 class sports, am I missing anything?

CBR600
Ninja 600
gixxer 600
>>
>>13959966
Google them, they're in the same vein (light weight, high revs) as the CBR250RR except bigger.

They exist because at the time there were 250cc, 400cc and unlimited class licenses in Japan so all the Japanese marques made baby supersports to fit these licenses.

The pic the anon posted is of a sleeved down CBR500 so you're kinda right.
>>
>>13959974
The CBR400 isn't LAMS approved because it's probably too powerful/power to weight ratio above 150kw/tonne.

To be honest the CBR400R is a hunk of shit.
I was looking at them before i got my cb400sf and they are nearly the same weight as my cb, less powerful and only have 1 front disc.
Fuck those bikes lol.
>>
>>13960008
The original or the sleeved down 500?

The 90's one is pretty much a bigger CBR250RR, whereas the "new" one is a slower CBR500.

Wakes you up like coffee but it's a Honda so I picked it up and went to school np.

First time I went down without gear and even though it happened at 10 km/h it hurt so much more than my lowside at 40 km/h wearing proper gear with proper padding

In terms of power, the RVF400 import is probably the kings of the LAMS sports bikes, though they're expensive as fuck and you'll cry when you break your fairings. A cheaper version would just be a 90s 250rrrrr or the kawa/suzuki equivalents. A CB400 with the VTEC or whatever also makes for a solid sports bike even though they're more upright. Modern Ninja 650s and similar bikes are really just standard bikes with fairings attached - wrong body positioning, 2 cylinder lardfat engines, harder to service than an actual standard bike - I would never buy one personally.

If you're starting out riding I'd recommend getting a dual sport like a drz400 or a dr650 - I know they don't have the "cool" factor of the RVFs but they're solid and reliable bikes and won't break when you inevitably crash them. Also dirt riding is soooo much fun (no cops, doriftu, the list goes on) and you'll attain much more riding skills than what the shitty LAMS courses will ever teach you. (LAMS is all about traffic safety and managing risk, not about whether you can actually ride well or not).
