the California legislature has voted down a day to commemorate John Wayne, because in a Playboy interview in 1971, he revealed himself to be a racist.

state legislatures routinely declare certain dates to be "so-and-so day."
most legislators save their time and effort for stopping bad bills, bills that would cause serious problems. i doubt you would see them voting down a day to honor a liberal.
