The problem with American politics is that the system doesn't reward those who use rational argument, though. We either get demagogues or oligogues (I suppose the word would be). Obama was certainly a demagogue, so (in a smaller way) was Bush Jr, so was Clinton (Bill), etc.
Of Trump, Sanders, and Clinton (Hillary), the only one who isn't really a demagogue is Clinton, but that's because she's chosen to appeal to the desires and prejudices of a smaller group of citizens than the other two.
