It took a nose dive after the transition from sweatshops of people drawing each cel, to computer everything. I guess they stopped caring because almost everything made late 90s and onwards is almost entirely unwatchable

The "nosedive" occurred because production became so much easier.
Before you had to sink a lot of resources into making an anime, so wasting time on garbage would be like throwing money down the toilet.
Since everything is so cheap and easy now, they can just pump out any piece of shit and usually turn a profit.
The other problem is that people aren't really selective anymore, at least not where profits matter (japanese NEETs). I swear, those goddam neets will buy into anything.

Now you might still get a couple of good shows, there are a ton of unremarkable shows, making them seem even more unremarkable and less watchable, and a flood of shit.
It's not that anime took a nose dive, there just was an increasing amount of shit added every year, and the increasing amount of mediocre stuff makes it looks like shit.

This is especially true with shows that have a small, dedicated following. Gintama really comes to mind here. They've cancelled that show and brought it back what, 3 times now? And the jokes they make about they're shoe string budget are priceless.

Hard to find an action anime that doesn't make it uncomfortable watching it with your dad with all the unnatural jiggling boobs. Yes there might be breasts and stuff on older animes, but they are static and dont fly all over the place or be larger than their damned faces. That's because Cardcaptor and Pokemon weren't marketed much as anime, mostly as just cartoons, along with lots of 4kids adapted anime, which was extremely heavy handed in localization (jelly donuts)
The stuff marketed specifically as foreign Japanimation shit was the stuff with slightly more mature themes, Bebop, NGE, GITS that showed up on the late night Toonami block etc.
