So when will hydrogen become a thing again with airships?

Seriously, the gas bags back then were made of pig bladders.

You could make gasbags out of something thousands of times stronger these days like kevlar or carbon fiber.

No, see >>932066
>>
>>932191
While the use of cargo airships is debatable (personally I think they would do pretty well delivering cargo to more rugged terrain far from any paved road), cruise airships would be another possible use.

It would be an interesting prospect to have overland cruise flights, although it wouldn't exactly be the most practical thing in the world.

Honestly though, I don't think commercial airships (barring cruises) will ever be successful with present-day technology. If we ever actually want to make it happen, we would need Matrix-like levitation or something along those lines. And at that point. And why not just make large-scale VTOL craft if thats the case?

I will say though, as a counter-example, nobody was really proposing a system like the Hyperloop before 2013 and few thought it would work when it was announced. Now we have 26 university teams designing hyperloop pods and a whole test track being designed.

actually the idea and first concepts of vacuum trains came up about a century ago.
>>
>>932236
Vaccum trains are a little different from what the hyperloop is though, as vaccum trains typically are proposed to go under oceans and reach other continents in like an hour or less. Hyperloops are more localized and are designed to be more competitive towards mid-range airline flights (the distance from Las Vegas to Los Angeles being an example).

And most of the proposals in that regard revolve around High-Speed Trains and in more ambitious proposals Maglev Trains.

Actually the original idea came from Jules Verne in a novel written 1863. But it took some decades to get technology ready and to build working prototypes.

The Victorians had already built actual functioning "pneumatic trains" in prior to that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Pneumatic_Despatch_Company
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Palace_pneumatic_railway

It wasn't a new idea when Jules Verne wrote about it.

I can't recall any concept he would have come totally on his own, most of his writing was highly reactionary and extrapolatory on popular science topics of the time.

Well maybe Hector Servadac ("Off on a Comet" for you filthy Englishmen), that was one weird book.

There was an article and possibly a video a few years back of an artist that strapped him self to the underside of a helium blimp calibrated to hold them aloft. Then he used large wings attached to their arms to propel him selves around the atrium of a mall. It was said that it was the closest thing to flying like Superman.

I've been searching for the article, but I never found it again.

I have found some similar setups, mostly using a harness.

Na, I have a feeling you've had that turntable for a long time.

I never realized how good the lyrics and story telling are until tonight to be honest

Just thought it was catchy when I heard it on the radio, you know? I'm terrible with lyrics until I read them. Then I read run to the hills, never realized what it was about until now. Powerful stuff.
tl;dr
I have a whole new appreciation for iron maiden.
From a blimp thread no less.
>>
>>947902
It's going to be the only piece of vinyl that I (personally) own, as it was only available for Record Store Day last week. Hopefully I'll get my dad's turntable working again so I can play it, along with all of his old vinyls (he wants to listen to it too). He's had that turntable for ages, probably since I was a baby.

Either way it is an amazing track and it's pretty funny that you now appreciate it because of this thread.
>>
>>947904
If you're having trouble fixing it start a thread on /diy/
Link here if you do and I'll check it out.
And yeah, pretty funny how that worked out. Going to re listen to them tomorrow when I can use my stereo. I'd piss off a few people if I were to do that now lol

Helium is in the same place where natural gas is, inside the earth, where it was created through millions of years of radioactive decay and stored there.

The only way to artificially produce helium is with nuclear fusion, but the amounts you produce are small and you would need a lot of fusion reactors, and +20 years before that comes reality.
