Bought me a set of UA Base 4.0 at the end of January and it still hasn't been cold enough to try it out. Snows all gone, but random icy patches on MUP as water flows across path and freezes at night.

>this would be so fun on a mtb

I planned for two hours, it took three.

In Malaysia, a country I do not particularly like. I start off with one goal in mind. Then after a bit I change goals. Then I just want out. I see a taxi depot area, swing over and ask how much to Thailand. 130 Malaysian. Take the offer, load the bike in the taxi, for the 90 km drive to the border. Check out of Malaysia and into Thailand. Life is good again.

Your eyes are so expressive. No wanting to gay marry you.

Also good on you for voting with your guns. My culture isn't down with that, but I'm not down with my culture. Probably not with yours either. But damnit, man, I respect you, no homo. I wish it was homo.

Woke up this morning disappointed to see forecast indicating winds 30 gusting to 50 km/h. But then I looked at the hourly forecast which showed the wind would soon be more reasonable.

Turned out to be a great day. Temp peaked at 17 °C, and the wind kept me from overheating. A SE wind while I was going west, SW wind while I was going east. Straight south while I was going north. Even going south wasn't bad as I could do 20 kph in the drops on dirt.

Did 120 km to get the 3rd Strava GF of the year out of the way. Passed by a town that had the outdoor facade for a tv show that's been off the air for a while. The fake gas station looks considerably better than the actual gas station in that town.

Figured out why I recently felt like crap the day after some intense rides. The exercise is triggering heartburn that can last several days. Heartburn is something I get so rarely I didn't recognize it.

Some really nice weather coming up through the weekend. There is a 191 km route in my ridewithgps collection that has gone unridden since I created it in 2013, so I might give that one a try.

Windy all week and today was no exception. I hadn't been for a ride since Sunday so I forced myself to go out anyway, so I'd have at least one ride in before going out with a group on Sunday. The wind was between 40 and 50 km/h, and I could only manage 13 km/h going against it in the drops.

Set a new PR coming back on a gravel road averaging about 42 km/h. Its a nice road but no one seems to ride it but me, 31 of the 35 segment attempts are mine.

Its looking like I'm going to start the season 10+ lbs lighter than last year thanks to the mild winter. Today I was noticing how much easier it is to breathe with less of a gut in the way.

They almost always end up in my helmet, so I can be rolling along at speed and have to take it off and shake it out really quick. I'm sure it's a laugh to watch but I'm allergic to those shits.

Gonna get a catlike soon with dat dere anti-bee mesh so I won't have to deal with them as much.

Got up while it was dark for a short ride before the wind got crazy. Went over to a parking lot to map it for openstreetmap before it filled up with cars. After tracing a parking lot it is fairly easy to add the buildings even if they aren't on the satellite imagery yet. Just look where the gaps are.

First week out riding since last season.

It was a bit cold for my taste, but once I warmed up it was good.Rode the same route I did Tuesday because I like it. I managed to take a minute off a segment on Strava. Tried a bit too hard and made my self sick after that segment. Still managed to improve my avg speed from 15.9 to 16.4mph.

Short week for me due to wind, wind and more wind. Met up with a guy for a ride this morning. We got to our mid-way breakfast point before the wind got too bad. Coming back was fast with a tailwind of 40 gusting to 60 km/h. I rode with him to his part of the city, so I had to backtrack 16 km against the wind to get home, but it wasn't too bad in the city. 116 km for the day and 180 for the week.

Snow in the forecast mid-week. I'd rather it didn't. Either way there will be enough precipitation to keep me off the gravel roads for a week while they dry.

A couple guys in the randonneur club are training for the rocky mountain 1200, so that will give me another chance to try getting a 600K ride done.

I rode to the opposite side of the spot where I had to backtrack a few weeks ago due to a closed road. If it wasn't for the mud back then I would have been able to get across the river. I started to ride to the spot where I had turned around, but people further up the road were shooting at stuff which won out over my compulsive need to fill in my heatmap.

The wind direction and strength in the forecast were both wrong so I got an unexpected push on the ride home. 100 km, probably the only long ride this week since more typical March weather is settling in for a while. So I'll ride my slower bikes, staying in the city.

Today turned out to be nice, but windy.

Did 24 miles after work. 2/3rds of the way in I got hit in the helmet with a a falling dead branch from the wind. Broken helmet visor and some cuts on my arm. Finished the ride.

1/4 second faster anywhere and I would have missed it. 1/4 second slower and I would have ate it with my face.

Meandered around on my mountain bike today with light snow flurries. -4 °C with a 40 km/h wind, so I stayed in the city. Less wind tomorrow, but there might be a bit of snow and ice. Looks like the daytime highs will be around freezing until the end of the month.

Got an early ride in today before the wind gets stupid. Set a couple PRs on the way home. Also set a new March distance PR. The recent worsening of weather is cutting into my distance, but I should still be able to get 1,000 km for the month. 5 - 10 cm of snow forecast for tomorrow so I might get one or two last chances to snowshoe and a few fat bike rides.

11 kph average speed on a 2 hour fat bike ride this morning. Fresh wet snow, light blowing snow and wind 30 gusting to 50 kph. Between the fresh snow and exertion, my glasses always had a bit of fogging. I had a difficult time seeing where the MUP was and ran off it several times. I couldn't take full advantage of the wind on the way back because anything more than a casual effort caused too much fogging due to lack of airflow. So I skipped most of the unplowed MUP on the return trip and stuck to the very icy streets. I'd really like to get lasik before next winter.

Rode my fat bike again. The streets were covered in frozen slush, which my studded tires can grab incredibly well. The foot traffic on the MUP made riding through the snow easier. I should get one more day of fatty riding before the snow melts too much. Though I might just have to ride back alleys or on the grass as anywhere the MUP got plowed the sun finished clearing the path to bare pavement. Going to be at least Sunday before highway suitable riding weather is back.

Towards the end of my ride today the parks crew were clearing the last of the paths in the park. The day after a snow is usually the best riding. Narrow packed sections to ride in after people have walked on it a bit. A lot of melting today. If I go out tomorrow I'll have to ride on the grass.

The snow on the grass today was too crusty to ride through, but not crusty enough to ride on top of. A snowshoe path I made on Tuesday was firm enough to ride on, but boring so I only did a few loops of it. Did a few loops on some islands in the park that never get plowed. Then rode down some back alleys which were bumpy frozen slush which made a great popping sound.

109 km ride today, about 2/3 gravel. Most of it was packed and fast. Though I came across several km of soft stuff and had to re-route in on area due to mud. The temperature kept going up and down the entire ride. 2.5 hours in I got snowed on.

Do you find that front bag affects your steering?
>>
>>938049
Yeah it does somewhat. Not horrendously to the point that I lose control, but it's not as stable going no handed as it would be without a load. It also dampens the steering quite a bit, but it's a sensation you get used to and learn to compensate for.

A low trail fork would probably solve most of the issue, but a disc capable low trail fork isn't exactly a cheap acquisition.

120 km ride puts me over 3,000 km for the year. For most of the ride there was no wind, so I could go fairly fast in any direction. Then I got a little push on the way home.

I need to start plotting more rides on ridewithgps since I used up one of the last ones that can be done until the ground thoroughly dries.

About a minute out of the house I noticed my chain was noisy but I was too lazy to turn around to go back and lube it. Went for a 93 km ride with a friend today. I was pushing too hard, he was pushing too hard. At least we lucked out and the headwind on the way back wasn't as strong as forecast. I put my slicks on when I got home, I'll see if that buys me a little more speed. Next weekend 150 km or maybe a 200 in another city if the weather is good.

Had I waited until the afternoon to ride I could have rode in shorts and a summer jersey. A little windy but 21 °C.

Been riding 50km each day the past week in temperatures around 0 to 7 degrees with a lot of wind. Didn't really feel in top form today but decided to take a shorter route of 30km. Did 30 miles flat-out mashing big climbs on Saturday afternoon, followed by a 40 mile hammerfest early this (Sunday) morning pushing my bike HARD in the big ring for 2 hours, followed by switching to a heavy commuter bike for 10 miles to go into work for a few hours, then 10 miles grinding the heavy bike home into a headwind, including a stop to put two gallons of milk in my panniers. Getting up the last hill before my house was a struggle, and when I rolled up to my front door, I got off the bike and all the muscles in my legs just kind of tingled with pain. I know what soreness, tiredness, strains, and aches feel like, but tingling with pain is a new one for me.

The proper rides felt really good, so I'm wondering if it was the effort-minimal recovery-effort cycle that really put the hurt on my legs (I didn't bonk and I'm not particularly exhausted, but my legs pretty near gave out about 500 yards from home).

>>
>>940496
>>push off
wat

You don't push start a bike. If you're mounting from its left side, you clip in your right foot, pull the pedal up to about 13:00, step onto right foot to lift you onto the saddle and propel bike in one smooth motion and clip the left foot in when convenient.
At no point should you be scooting with your left foot, pushing off with a hand or anything similar.
>>
>>940498
That's what I meant, just opposite. I do push a bit with the foot that is on the ground though, should I not be doing that?

I'll stop doing it though.

I dun goofed and rode on some wet trails. in my defense there were several other bikers out and this was on a new trail system. Most of it was dry but water/mud was pooled in several spots. I also rode down stairs for the first time today- it scared the shit out of me but i didn't wipe.
p.s. this mud is left after 5 miles of riding on pavement

p.s.s car wash kinda sucks on bikes

Horse: "Where is apple? :C"
>>
>>940611
I find it ridiculous that you can't ride on wet trails.

Mtbing seems like such a fake discipline, having to cycle on man made trails like a theme park ride.
>>
>>940726

Not riding on wet trails is just an etiquette thing, so that when you go back when it's dry the trail won't be completely destroyed.

>having to cycle on man made trails like a theme park ride.

You mean like every other cycling discipline
>>
>>940726
>Mtbing seems like such a fake discipline
Not everyone is into that contrived trail centre bullshit. The trouble is when laws about rights of way actively restrict you from the cool little routes and natural paths, so legally you can only ride on boring flat bridleways or artificial downhill tracks.

>>940752
>the trail won't be completely destroyed
Path erosion is almost entirely caused by water/rain/natural causes. The effect of cyclists, walkers, and horse riders is barely anything. It would be a sloppy mess anyway, ruts or not. And those ruts will very quickly flatten out once the mud dries and gets walked/rode over.
>>
>>940762
It's possible that this is true about riding wet trails in your specific region, it varies a lot actually. But there are also regions where riding wet trails requires many man hours to repair, I know this from my local trails. There are literally ruts from people riding the spring thaw all the way through the summer.
Don't make generalities, there are already enough people fucking up my trails.
>>
>>940762
The effects of horses is more than anything combined desu, they fucking ruin the ground when it's wet.

If you are riding on a singletrack and someone is coming in the opposite direction who is supposed to get out of the way? I usually do b/c I just got mack into trail riding and am not yet familiar w/ most trails ive been riding on. Also I'm sick of saying "on your left" to plebdestrians- If i have enough room do I really need to announce my presence? I'm about to put a bell on this bitch.
>>
>>941502
Even if there is enough room give a ding or two, ideally it should let them know not to make any sudden movements but in reality who the fuck knows
>>
>>941504
no bell yet but my hub is p fuckin noisy and sometimes works.
>>
>>941502
I've always heard that the downhill rider gets out of the way because it's more work to get started again going uphill. Plus, it's a bit easier to see what's coming up when your going downhill.
>>
>>941502
Some trails encourage one direction of travel. Otherwise uphill gets priority.
>>
>>941502
>Also I'm sick of saying "on your left" to plebdestrians- If i have enough room do I really need to announce my presence?
There is a law in my country that you must have a bell on your bicycle for it to be street legal. But fuck that. It only make plebestrians even more confused. The correct strategy is powering up above 30 km/h and swish past them before they react by spreading out and acting confused defeating the point of making your presence known.
>>
I've been encountering a lot of asians lately that move to the left when I ring my bell.

yesterdays ride

>be in a huge rush after work to get out and ride

>thank god I still have that heavy as fuck allen key that isnt on my combo tool
>crank it down and keep checking on it every few minutes for the next few miles

should I get some blue locktight on that?
>>
>>941979
I was in the LBS when guy came in with his crank in a bag. He was riding and his left crank arm came off and was stuck to his foot because clipless. Then while trying to unclip right foot, pulled chainring and axle out, also clipped to his foot. I'm sure it sucked but sounded pretty funny.

>on daily 30km exercise ride
>at more or less the halfway point get bad metallic noises
>a spoke snapped off the back wheel at the adjustment screw thing
>spend the next 10 minutes trying to get the broken spoke out of the wheel due to the disc from the disc brake being in the way
>finally get it out
>ride 15km back home on a broken wheel

So is the wheel permanently damaged and I need to replace it? I hear that you should not use a wheel with a broken spoke since it can go out of true and beyond repair.

And I will in the future bring tools on my ride so I can more easily remove a broken spoke.
>>
>>942114
Replace the spoke and get the wheel back to the best balance and trueness possible. Replacing the spoke is inexpensive, so it is almost always worth a try when it's the first time a spoke has broken. Don't worry about replacing the wheel unless more spokes are breaking or your rim is too fucked to even get back to true

If it is difficult to get a spoke out of a wheel on the ride, just bend the spoke around some other spokes so it doesn't shift around
Having a properly sized spoke wrench for your wheels isn't a bad thing if you want to carry it for emergency wheel truings
>>
>>942116
Good to hear. It's a new bike that only has rolled 1000km so far. Going to order some replacement spokes and a spoke wrench.
>>
>>942119
Post picture of new bike
>>
>>942119
If the spoke threads in from the drive side the cassette will need to be removed to install the new spoke. Breaking a spoke that soon could be an indication that the wheel is insufficiently tensioned. My LBS built a wheel for me that was so loose I broke 3 spokes on the first long ride.

Got a 48 km ride in this morning before it got crazy windy. The wind must have been pushing 40 km/h on the way back home, but I only intermittently caught it head on. Ramped up to 60 gusting to 70 km/h after I got home. Tomorrow also windy, but the temperature won't get above freezing.

My distance so far this month is much lower than I planned because of generally shitty weather. I want to get some decent length rides in this week ahead of a scheduled 200 next Saturday.

28 miles of hilly, varying quality gravel/dirt road to the lake at the southern end, with a peaceful break in a patch of pine woods halfway through.

Twice as long as my longest ride to date, only 28 miles but a hilly trek so I'm still pretty damn happy with myself. Planning on continuing onto the paved rural roads at the southern end of the forest that lead to the fun of our local college town, another 30 miles away, but I'll have to get in better shape for that.

First 200 km brevet today. Started off at -3 °C so I had to raise my saddle and use my winter boots, winter tights and heavier baselayer. I was concerned I might get too hot later in the day, but it never did get very warm.

One guy hadn't been on his bike since last September so he decided to see how things went and turn back early if necessary. He managed to do the entire ride, though we rode slower and limited his time out front.

Tomorrow the road bike comes out of the basement. I'll put the knobby tires back on my touring bike and use it mostly for gravel rides.

Saskatchewan. I think I'm near one of the flattest spots, with zero indigenous trees. Which definitely leads to "oh fuck" moments when lightning rolls in when out on the highway. Further north there is more brush and trees.

The main highway through Saskatchewan follows the flattest, most boring terrain, because the highway follows the railway and that terrain was ideal for trains. There are some more interest and hilly areas far off the main highway.

went for a short ride on the Pacific 101, the serious cyclists are starting to pass through. the roads are exquisite, but my stamina/endurance is crap. trying to work up to 10 miles a day while exploring the side roads.

Just got back from a beautiful ride, taking as many narrow cycling lanes through nature as I could. Absolutely amazing.
But what was beautiful most of the way turned into absolute hell about 20km from home. A sudden catastrophic hunger flat that reduced my heart rate to 80bpm which is just over resting heart rate for me. The struggle home was unbearable and I was actually afraid I was going to fall over at some points. I will triple my ride rations in the future.

There's lots to see. There's nothin' to block your view.

Rode fairly hard during parts of a 3.75 hr ride today. Had to take a nap when I got home. I haven't needed to do that in a long time.
>>
!st ride in a few days, it snowed and I was sick. I hit a quick 20, it was cold and my toes went numb towards the end. Run off screwed up, and flooded one of my favorite segments on strava. But on the bright side at least it wasnt windy for once.

>out riding 50km with my shitty city bike
>cargo shorts and all
>heavy winds, nearly get knocked off twice
>pass old granny who's pushing the bike alongside her, since she can't take the wind anymore
>stop and deliberate whether I should just go back
>lycra guy passes me slowly, gives me the faggy stare down
>"OK"
>wheelsuck him for 5km or so
>he tries to disengage
>wind is too stronk and I keep on his ass
>quite a firm one as well
>pop a semi
>wind dies down and he leaves me in the dust

I'm a very newby newb, been riding on some new rubber I decided to put on my cheap hardtail, as the stock tyres were HORRIBLE.
Pic related, I choose these Continental Race Kings 2.2 ProTection, front and rear as I ride 90% on hardpack with some loose sections, plus some commuting. (They're usually rear tyres only, I've read many different opinions about how safe they are on the front, some racers use them front and back, though)

If anyone is looking on some FAST but grippy tyres for his mtb, these are amazing. In my newbyness I did break traction a couple times yesterday, but where the old tyres would just lose grip and fuck me over, these instantly regain grip somehow. The black chili compound helps, I guess. Plus they're 2.2 but really high volume, something like 2.3.

Oh and about yesterday ride
>I wear contact lenses
>wind was stronk as fuck
>DUST EVERYWHERE
>have to call it quits after 15km as I can't see shit anymore
:(

Fyi you can fix those chromabs pretty easily... I meen the huge green and purple fringes.
Open it in Photoshop, then use Camera Raw filters to fix the chromabs, do it on another layer so if it fucks up colour on other bits you can just erase part of that layer (here for example I had to fix the blue logo on the tyres, as it was completely desaturated)

Currently 5 people registered for the local 200 km brevet this weekend. Plus 3 more that have shown a strong interest in going. That would be by far the best turnout since I started with the club.

An experiment in snack storage for a longer ride tomorrow. Half liter Platypus soft bottle stuffed with 440g of blueberry yogurt. The real test will be if I can clean the damn thing well enough by filling with soap and water then shaking.
>>
did a 97 mi road ride today w some gravel thown in. didn't feel *in synch* with the bike at all.
>>

Yogurt in bottle worked well, managed to squeeze most of it out. Slow going on parts of my ride today. Almost all the gravel roads have been recently graded and are soft. 106 km takes me to 1,000 km for the month, a tie with my previous best April distance. The weather forecast is looking like I'll be riding my touring bike again for this weekend's 200, which means swapping tires again.

I've got some 700x34 knobby Bontrager cross tires for my gravel rides, they are going bald so I'll soon replace them with Continential CycloX Kings.

For road rides 700x32 Marathon Supremes, but I've never really liked them. The ride feels harsh. I liked the tires that came with the bike, Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase which are no longer made. I'm thinking of trying Bontrager AW2.

For my road bike I'm using GP 4 Season which seem decent. I destroyed the sidewalls in 2 GP4000s last year so I'm trying something tougher.

Short ride today, since the wind was 45 kph gusting to 60. If it wasn't for the gusts the wind wouldn't have been too bad. Lots of extra shifting to maintain a decent cadence. And whenever I had a cross wind the bike was very twitchy. Its supposed to be nearly as windy tomorrow, so the 200 km ride is probably off. But the route has us going straight into the wind for the first 50 km, so if it isn't too strong in the morning we might still give it a shot. Or at least go out a few hours and fly back.

Then don't ride clipless.

Forecast revised to 50 gusting to 70 km/h, so the 200 was obviously out today. Since I had already had my breakfast I rode over to the starting point anyway, nearly the entire 14 km. 5 of us showed up, and 4 of us decided to ride up wind for a while. The headwind had us going as slow as 10 km/h in the drops. With the wind at our side we had to lean very hard to the side. Going down wind was fun, could do about 36 km/h without pedaling. I was cruising at 52 km/h for a while.

Going south with the wind at our side would not have been pretty. While going home I got blown off the road by a passing cube van. A passing semi would have really sucked. Managed to still get in 65 km.

Got some crazy elevation numbers the last two days riding in strong winds. 250 m on a 28 km flat ride and 750 m yesterday on another mostly flat ride.

Did that,thanks a lot ! I doubled it (I think)

Took some siqq panoramas but Lumia Panoramas did not save them so that was lame.My shitpiece of a bike has been making a lot of noice on the pedal area lately when my cadence is high, went to a mechanic and he told me the roulement had spaces (dont know how to say that in english sorry).I need to save up money and buy a roadracer ASAP.

Also, what is the best tracking app for Windows Phone ?I am currently using RunMaster Cycle Free on my Lumia 520 but making a route into gpx is on the paid version.
>>
>>948382
The best tracking app on windows phone is "get a garmin"

Look for one of the third party strava apps, it's a great service. I used straza mate but apparently there are some better ones out there.

Took my mountain bike out for a spin. The combination of not having been on the bike for a few weeks and being out in the open with 40 km/h winds was hard on the legs.

I've settled on using my touring bike for all the brevets this season. The wide gear range more than makes up for the extra weight.

But since I like riding gravel during the week I'm going to be doing a lot of tire swapping for the next month and a half.

Passed my April distance PR yesterday. I've set a new distance PR for every month so far this year. This April will be my 3rd all-time highest monthly distance total.

Setting a new PR for May will be a challenge since the old one is 2,200 km.

Yet another day where the wind was 50 to 100% stronger than forecast. Only went half as far as I was planning because it was miserable.
