Livery thread!
Post your favorite airline liveries! I've always like Southwest's colors. Some think it's ugly, but I think it's a nice splash of color in a sea of boring blue and white planes.
>Not posting based Braniff
Believe It!
>>923447
Funny how a completely unrelated train operating company of the same name in the UK uses the same color scheme.
Always been a fan of all the Aeroflot liveries, especially the current one.
>>923460
United's battleship grey will always hold a special place in my heart as well.
Best part of coming to the airport t.bh. Especially taxiing around the runway. I love looking at planes and liveries, I don't know why, but I love it. I wish I could say why. Interesting I guess. International, planes coming and going from different places IN THE WORLD... it's all cool - and "art" and liveries on aircraft make it seem so... cosmopolitan? I don't know. I can't put it to words.
I can't ever see this livery without thinking of 9/11 and it really bugs me
Happy plane is best plane.
best

>You will never fly on a Lockheed 3-holer with a fuckin' lounge at the front of the cargo hold
Hold me ;_;
I like simple.
>>923531
mmm that color scheme. I love the Alaska font as well.
>>923531
I'm convinced their new colors are a direct result of the Seahawks winning a Super Bowl.
Expensive to paint? Maybe, but damn was that one classy livery.
>>923531
Why is Bob Marley on it?
>not putting a massive beak on every one of your planes
>>923737
It looks nothing like Bob Marley.
I work at Sky Harbor Phoenix and can confirm that the southwest livery looks awesome when the planes are lined up on the tarmac. It makes our American side look dumb.
I'm a fan of Azul.

You should get out and about more often!
>>923460
Posting some Aeroflot OC I got while transit in SVO
Iran Air. It's very defined and aesthetic
>no KLM yet
Shit taste, all of you.
>>925892
NWA here, can we be bros?
This livery makes me nostalgic for the 90s... watching planes take off from MSP with my dad. Fuck Delta for buying them out and changing all their planes to their boring color scheme that's nowhere as /comfy/.
>>925927
Ironically, the paintwork reduced the ability of the plane's skin to cool itself and reduced the top speed compared to the standard Concorde.
>>926096
Damn man, those were the days.
>>923472
>make it seem so... cosmopolitan
this is probably the best way i've seen it summed up so far.
in general to me it feels like older liveries more often represent the country or location of the airline (often being a little stuffy while doing so, but nice. very business looking) while more modern eurowhite design seems more oriented towards being 'friendly', welcoming and international, ending up looking more like it wants to sell you coffee than transport you to varied and interesting destinations.
I like it,its bold and brash.
The last time I was in we had to wait +-20 minutes(were already seated in the plane ready to taxi) Because seeming some bolt was missing (possibly on the exterior) and we needed to wait on some "engineers" to ccover it up with I kid you not..tape.
Is this common?
Are planes just flying because of maymaybe duct tape and WD-40?
I've always thought that Frontier putting a different animal on each tail was absolutely brilliant. They're an absolutely shit super low-cost airline now however.
>>926852
Just from the perspective of a student pilot in a tiny helicopter, the less you as a passenger know about the shit that is constantly going wrong, the better.
>>926852
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_tape
It's extremely common to use it as a temporary fix.
ill post a few of my all time best
Had the pleasure of travelling on an MD-90 wearing this livery between Las Vegas and DFW in 2003
Delta Song..
Airtours for nostalgia
>>923774
>Not giving all your planes a smiley face
I like All Nippon Airways's plain and sleek blue-white livery.
I like both UPS versions.
>>923473
same but i love the look of polished aluminum as opposed to paint

South America represent.
>>923462
Same. I will always remember it, tulip and all, descending over the statue of liberty before banking as it slammed into the 78th floor of the South Tower at 9:03 AM on Tuesday, September 11th 2001.
>>926852
Good man, I'm an easyjet pilot and I approve of this post!
>>923565
I flew on that.
Dublin to Milan.
>>926937
pleasure and MD-90 in the same sentence?
Old painting of Japan Transocean Airlines
The Granddaddy of them all.
>>926852
God damn the A319 is so fucking cute
I find the Lufthansa logo really good-looking. And Helvetica is da shit
>>923557
Always liked this livery the best for JAL. Used to see them flying around when I drove by their former training center in central Washington.
>>930428
...and I miss seeing these at HNL. If the bubble hadn't burst and JAL hadn't taken it in the crotch a few years back, we might still be seeing these...
>>930429
...I should probably include the actual pic.
>>923447
Casuals, the lot of you
this.
>>932326
tight.
This is bretty gud
>>923447
>boring blue
heh that's what me and a buddy call the former Southwest livery. You'd tend to get sick of it when your local airport has over 100 daily flights on WN.
>>923557
Mee too
Gay + shit
>>932326
Holy sexy. Is this current?
>>934445
yez i live in auckland and see em flying over every now and then. real neat livery.
>>930388
Heck yes. Qatar's inverse of grey and white is nice as well.
>>934828
>aircrafts
No retro Qantas?!
>>926936
i remember flying on the landor 747s
i believe the only 747 im missing is the -100 series
>>926103
>paintwork reduced the ability of the plane's skin to cool itself
How so?
Anyone else prefer the upward tips of the end of the wing? (Don't know what they're called)
The split tip looks odd and not sleek to me.
I'm assuming it's for fuel economy.
>>926358
What's the reason for putting that middle engine there ?
>>929666
Nice trips
Have you heard the taped phone call when JFK found out they went out and pre ordered a bunch of Concords? That's when he was forced to announce that America would develop its own to rival it.
Forgot the guy's name but he was instrumental in the 747's success.
Dude was a mad genius.
>>929520
Nothing worse than flying on a plane that is older than you. Imagine what Uber would be like if they let people use 25 year old cars.
>>932326
Fucking hell that thing is beautiful
>>936338
Aircraft are under much more scrutiny and rigorous inspections and maintenance.
That comparison is invalid.
>>936329
> What's the reason for putting that middle engine there
Used to be a requirement to have at least 3 engines for transoceanic flights.
>>923731
>>926096
Those were great liveries.
>>936558
Thanks
>>926937
whoever decided to retire this livery deserves to have his epaulets ripped from his shoulders at dawn
>>936329
that jfk story is an urban legend
>>936675
Nope. Saw it on some documentary. He was pissed off on the phone discussing the Pan Am deal.
>>936675
Here's a real Presidential phone call though

It's because dark paint won't deflect heat as well as white paint when you're that high up in the atmosphere.
Are you talking about winglets when you mention the "upward tips"?
>>936662
>compass arrow pointing northwest
I suppose the orientation of the delta on the vertical stabilize is a homage to that?
>>936920
What's that little vent thing above the jet engine? It has burn exhaust like marks.
GOAT
>>937193

some port for the A/C pack
>>937194
unpainted surfaces on DC-10s were nice
>>937185
They fall under the category of wingtip device. A wingtip device can either be a wingtip fence which extends both above and below the wing (see >>936885), a winglet which is attached at a sharp angle (see >>930428) or a blended winglet which is attached via a smooth contour (see >>936323). There is also a raked wingtip like >>932326.
All wingtip devices improve fuel efficiency by reducing the intensity of wingtip vortices and thus reducing drag (see pic related). Some wingtip devices, like the raked wingtip, increase climb performance or shorten takeoff run length.
>>937203
A/C makes scorch marks?
Also, what is this? Pic related

Trailing edge flap. It's a secondary control that modifies the lift produced by the primary controls: elevators, ailerons, and rudder. Used to increase lift and drag to assist in takeoffs and landings.
>>937244
No
>>937252
Thanks anon.
It grew on me seeing it every mission in Baghdad and Erbil.
Varig MD-11
I miss Swissair's old livery
SADLY, IT CEASED OPERATIONS IN 2002
The a310 is a true superhero in aviation
The md-11 is way better man...
(Swissair)
Eh, Swissair's (OLD NEW) livery is better
Screw swiss international airlines
I love whales
especially the orca
I miss the old livery of Malaysia airlines
The 747 is way better than the A380
2005
The 737-400...
Why Malaysia airlines, why?
>>937966
hnngg!! 10/10
>>937966
That's wild, never knew that existed. Cool stuff.
>>938050
It's the airplane version of Ithiqua from the model railroad threads. First thing I thought when I saw them .
United 90's "battleship grey" is top tier
also liked Delta's original widget and the scheme right after that, and the Northwest "bowling shoe" livery
Southwest's last livery is probably the best that's still around
US Airways liveries were not bad either, and the new American one is alright
>>938878
That is a classy paint job but as I remember, many United pilots were upset when it was introduced because the gray made it more difficult to see the planes in certain weather conditions.
>>938962
As a pilot myself I don't think it'd be much harder to spot than a white livery, about the only planes that are really easy to see are Southwest and that's only if they're not against a semi-dark background
>>930388
Beautiful!
Only Dutchfags will understand. Many good memories with this airline, and god damn that logo.
>>942144
And alternatively, this
>>942110
chub chub SP
>>942108
2 questions
1) why do those doors not appear to be shut flush?
2) How is that middle jet engine exactly work? It's exhausting below its intake.
>>942428
Ignore second question, it's an s duct
>>942428
>1) why do those doors not appear to be shut flush?
Looks perfectly flusg to me mate. If the dark patch under them is playing tricks on you, that's where the evacuation slides are. Don't know why they didn't paint those panels over.
Am I the only one who really likes the look of planes without winglets?
>>942498
Certainly doesn't help that I don't have my glasses on.
KLM's new livery is absolutely perfect, more airlines should take note.
>>942507
I like somewhere in between. Like the raked wing tips of the 777 and 787 (and sorta the A350)
Cool idea but poorly executed IMO. Should have just had the ICE livery along the entire plane.
Alsie Express curren livery
Aesthetic and nostalgic.
>>944226
And fucking ugly
>>944226
>>944356
Never much of a nostalgiafag, but I really do miss the bold business style of those planes (and most older liveries), including canyon blue.
Honestly, I've never really HATED a livery before Southwest's brand new one. It's so overwhelmingly "meh" that it makes me irrationally mad.
Too bad they went bankrupt...
>>944356
You just don't get it.
