Just bought my first road bike for 400 aussie dollarydoos. Fuji Sportif with tiagra 10 speed.

Pretty happy with it desu.
>>920419
I'll have to see if I can adjust it, and the bars too, I haven't had a chance to yet. Adelaide here
>>
>>920421
What happened to the frame? Lovely bike in any case, nice color scheme, pls trim the steerer
>>920423
Tiagra is great for a first road bike. As the other anon said in the previous thread, your saddle seems tilted a bit too far back, may wanna level it with the ground. Same with the bars, in time when you get more flexible you'll be wanting a lower position.
>>
>>920421
>Had the frame replaced under warranty
What did you doooooo?
>>
>>920428
Crack in the frame near the seatpost clamp.

Took in into the LBS to show them and they called a couple of weeks later saying "hi we have a new frame"

Unfortunately (depending how you look at it) the old colours were limited edition so the new one is a bit more standard black with orange trim.

Hesitant to get the steerer cut since I'm still not sure if comfortable with it so low.

>>
>>920521
Explain why, please.
I live in a city with very fucked up roads, fat tires help a lot. And it's very light, so I can get everywhere fast and without getting too tired.
Handles drops and jumps like it was made for them, had no problems.
I think it's quite nice for a 300 euro build.
>>
>>920523
I have a bike like that, and admittedly I do commute on it during deep winter, other than that it's meh as a mode of transportation. And judging by the components (singlespeed, small travel fork) it looks like a dirt jumper rather than a freeride bike. It's an okay bike, but not there are better commuters and better freeride bikes.

I was on a very limited budget, so had to get myself a bike as tough as I could. I prefer the single speed configuration because it's simple, light, and I hate derailleurs, cables hanging from everywhere, etc. You are right, my bike's built on a DJ frame. (UMF Hardy)
And you know, my commuting is jumping on and off sidewalks, bunny hopping stairs, and stuff like that. Just look at the pic, and you'll get the idea. That's a sidewalk.
Thank you for your opinion, I appreciate it a lot, since it's actually based on your experience, and I really understand your point.

This is paradise for conmuting on this >>920485 . Take a look, this a normal conmuting in a normal town like here. At least one third of streets are shit like >>920529 . Other streets are gravel and in other zones you have to use shitty sidewalks for safety. See that track is simmetric respect the center. in other words, this trip is "go and back" in the same chart,, half time to go, half time to back.

Are the normal conmutes that plp do here like this?

This is so sexy, makes me want one of those frames.
>>
>>920535
Oh, that's actually a bit like the city I live in. We've got a lot of hills here too.
You bike's awesome, and I would have used one like it for every day riding, but I really like going ape shit, so my commute is going downhill as fast as I can, jumping over everything, swerving through traffic jams and taking shortcuts like stairs and parks, and pedaling as fast as I can uphill. Gotta make my riding fun. :D
Please rate my vintage road bike too. KTM Formula.
Jumped some stairs on it, broke the rear axle. 300km later, still riding it without a problem.
>>
>>920539
I had one like yours 4 years ago. Wheels and frame went shitty after 1000 km of city. I had to sell it for 7 dollars in street as junk to save a bit of money because i turned into garbage, frame in special.

Your average fat biker riding knobbies does it for the same reason - just for fun. Most people don't have the guts to ride in conditions where fat bikes are actually useful. And like in all activities, a few posers are mixed in yeah.

I put slicks on it because Ive been riding more in the city while I'm at college. Knobbies can go back on it when I get back to the country

Poor old fork already needs a rebuild (last completed 10 months ago) and the lower headset bearings are a mess. I'll most likely fix 'er up and start thinking about a completely new rig. I've already been in contact with a certain bike manufacturer in Whistler... :)

It's the Onza Ibex, the lighter cased one, it's kind of like a thinner walled High Roller. I feel like it would be the perfect tire for a between XC and trail bike like an Anthem X, Tallboy, etc. but it's a bit too light for full time trail riding. I've ridden Ardents before too, I though they were good cornering but terrible braking and climbing traction, it was on a Tallboy LTC, not sure if they long chainstays affected my judgement on the climb part.

No, it's not even close to XC because slack geo, suspension, tractor tires and everything else. It's going to be a bitch to pedal with any speed on forgiving terrain. And sluggish steering will make it booring as fuck to do so, so you wouldn't want to anyway.

Must be an awesome bike in the rough stuff though.

how do you ride with the handlebars that low? It seems like it would be uncomfortable.
>>
>>921263

Marketed as all-mountain... kind of in the middle. It's really just a very capable XC / light DH.

Has had a lot of upgrades to get to this point. Much thought has gone into components to keep weight down, and not affect the geometry too much. For instance, replaced heavy old 120mm fork with lighter 150mm, but I run a little extra sag to compensate. Now I have much better rebound, but minimal increase in BB height and a lot less weight.

>>921299

Actually, it's fast as fuck on any terrain (adjustable compression) and only weighs 28lbs which is pretty good for a full sus. XR4 is a pretty fast rolling tire, too.

Bike is leaning a few degrees, making it look a little more slack... wish you could try it.

Fuji has the name trademarked and licences the name to Specialized. Fun thing is that Fuji are chill and don't care if anyone else uses the name, meanwhile Specialized tried to sue a small café for using 'Roubaix' in their name.
They didn't succeed because Fuji stepped in to say Specialized didn't have the power to do that and they would be hapy for the café owner to use the name.

tl;dr Yes, and Fuji are total bros meanwhile Specialized once again is total shit

Just got it yesterday. I have not ridden a day in probably 8 years and know nothing about bicycles. There are a ton of trails behind our apartments and I was out for 3 hours today. Shit is better than I remember. My ass hurts like fuck tho. Is that something to just get used to or is there a way around that?
>>
>>921535
Really depends on why you're hurting: if it's muscle soreness, that's because you're weak and out of condition. If it's soreness because your crotch was getting jackhammered by the saddle slamming into it, that's a ride technique and saddle position issue. If your sore because the saddle is too narrow/wide for your sitbones, the only solution is to find an appropriate saddle.

It's not muh muscles, probably the saddle size or position as I'm 6'7" and 260 pounds. Having a palm sized piece of rubberized plastic shove into my groin for a few hours will cause some discomfort I assume.

If you hurt within 5 minutes, you need a better suited saddle. If it takes a while, that's probably just your ass being a normal ass... asses hurt when getting beat up by something hard, man.

>I have experience with this

My saddle hurt like crazy until I got used to it.
>>
>>921535

Replace those pedals... then the shifters, fork, and crank.
>>
>>921535
It's normal for you ass to hurt, happens to everyone who doesn't ride, it's simply not used to it. Your ass will adapt and stop hurting after riding for a while. You'll just have to sit it out (get it)
>>
>>921628
This isn't always true, the alternative is you get saddle sores that get worse and worse until you cut back on the riding and get a better saddle that lets you ride more

Lycra helps too

You can't really buy it since it's a custom build. The frame is a Diamant cross frame (bicycle company from the former GDR) with Reynolds 531 tubes and a new powder coating. Parts are nothing special really, Shimano 105 and a Sram crank, tires are 30mm Challenge Strada Bianca.

Didn't really keep track of cost but all in all I probably spent around 1000 bucks on this, some party I still had laying around so I didn't buy everything new. I make new builds or change things all the time, it's a nice hobby albeit kinda spendy.

Swapping out the fork soon, just waiting on a brake caliper spacer. Current one's a bit flexy and old and I can't be arsed to service it, the spare I have laying about should be a bit better.

Tempted to put a 5 bolt crankset on it so I can go larger than 48t as I don't use the lower gears, but then I don't know if they'll ever come in handy should the battery die unexpectedly.

Which bike are you referring to? The wheel on the electric bike is indeed rather heavy and lessens the effectiveness of the rear suspension, however I didn't have a spare rigid frame and the suspension does still help a little.

If you're referring to the other bike, the Alfine 11 on it really isn't that heavy and the suspension was fine. That wheel is currently on my DH bike, will probably swap it back over when I do the rebuild.

A zero offset seatpost might make that bike more comfy

I'm 6'4 and ride a 58cm frame. The seatpost is so high up you get more than enough offset without the seatpost's assistance

I also got a lot of benefit from going to a relatively stubby (in my world) 90mm stem with a slight rise. Not sure of the technical reason but it helps.

I think the nature of being over 6'4 means (on average) very very long legs, less long arms, relatively short torso

Don't really have a problem with the reach to be honest so I don't think I need a different seatpost. The only thing that makes this bike a little uncomfy is the huge saddle-to-bar drop even with spacers. It only really bothers me on long rides over 100k though.

You're right about the legs though, it's not the same for all tall people though but I have very long legs compared to my overall height (6'3) which is why my seatpost ends up looking ridiculous. I could ride a larger frame but anything larger just looks hideous.

Like I said, wrong sport but fuck I just love cycling and it makes you look like a dork anyway. You should see me actually riding the bike, it literally looks like a mini velo and I'm not even fat.

Large frames don't look hideous. Your bike already looks pretty silly anyway with that much post & a big stack of spacers. It sounds like you're making it work but a larger frame would clearly be more ideal. Also tilting your saddle down is retarded. You're going to be constantly sliding forward and putting extra pressure on your back and wrists.

Tilting it forward is necessary with this much bar drop, otherwise I'm sitting on my balls and perinium instead of my seat bones causing me pain and numbness. Trust me, I've figured out how to set up this bike, I've done 350km rides with this setup. Having your balls carrying your bodyweight way less comfortable than some pressure on your hands...
>>

>>922860
>You're right about the legs though, it's not the same for all tall people though but I have very long legs compared to my overall height (6'3) which is why my seatpost ends up looking ridiculous.

Yeah. This is why I end up riding 58cm with a jumped up seatpost and stubby stem.

Because of the seat tube angle, the higher the seatpost goes, the more setback you get.

At my height, the saddle gets set so far back that I start having issues both with the cranks being too far forwards AND not being able to reach the bars. So I'm 6'4 on a 58cm bike just for the shorter top tube. Zero offset seatpost and a stubby stem help fight the top tube length even more.

I think a tall seatpost looks cool to a point and then looks ridiculous. but who cares. If the seatpost is at a safe insertion height and you like the fit, fuck it. Internet aesthetic critics are just hyper-consumer idiots, which is the opposite of what cycle means to me. Just consider the option for your next bike if you have fit issues
>>
>>923061

But it fucks up the drop hand position (harder to reach the brakes).

I'm 6'4 and I was guilty of the same until I figured (despite what average/short people advised me) that a SHORTER stem and zero-offset post is what I needed for level bars.

But keep doing what you do, especially if you don't use your drops. I ride in them 90% of the time and it's way better than being all scrunched up on the hoods
>>

I'm not too proud of this bike, the 1x is gonna go, but here it is

My floor-to-pelvis without shoes is 36"/91.5cm

I have 180mm cranks which help bring the seatpost down a bit. I bought some IRD 200mm cranks but they were duds (chainrings wobbled really bad, being returned)

Most online calculators put a 36" inseam at 200/220mm cranks. If you can find a bike with a high BB and are okay with toe overlap, that's another angle to pursue if you have $$$
>>
>>923394
You do have an uncommon drivetrain setup, but I don't see any reason why you need to feel embarrassed about your bike, looks like a great ride, geared seems kinda low for a road bike but otherwise I'd ride the hell out that (if I wasn't too short to even throw a leg over the frame).
>>
>>923394

what gearing is that ?
for commuting i think 1x is the shit and I'm sure for non competative roadcycling it's also quite swell
>>
>>923418
>>923405

Thanks for the nice comments. I'm totally non-competitive. This bike is for bouncing around downtown Philly/NYC and long rides in the suburbs. I don't like riding into the wind so I like to have a very aero position even if I am going kinda slow.

Set up:

> It's 40t front (42t would have been a better choice)
> 8 speed 11-32 in the back

I like to spin a lot. The 180mm cranks can be rougher on knees so spinning is another plus

more comfort choices:

> Front tire is 32c
> Rear is 28c
> salsa cowbell bars, weird choice but comfortable and have a really long drop section

It's a good road bike for casual city/suburbs riding where the streets are nasty and wind is an issue
>>
>>923442

I totally dig custom solutions.
I think more people should try to find a setup that's really tailored to them
>>
>>923442
I would've guessed 36t just going by the size, shows just how large the bike is I guess (I'm guessing 5 bolt doesn't go that low on the outer ring, I wouldn't know as I only use 4 bolt stuff).

Btw if you want to spin shorter cranks are better for higher cadences. I've got 160s and can manage about 110rpm, no idea if that's any good.
>>
>>923448
>160s

Yeah, I've heard fixie guys ride on smaller cranks because they're easier on knees / easier to stop

I feel like I'm riding a children's bike on 175mm so I don't think I could handle it
>>
>>923448

I think standard 5 bolt road cranks at 110bcd can go to 34t, but that's the limit

That's a really weird combination of parts. At first it just looks like a random beater but then there's that special edition sram carbon crank. How did that end up on there?

Well I wouldn't really call that a "jumped up" seatpost, seems pretty average actually. It also looks like the frame is bigger than 58cm but I could be wrong.

It's >>922421 here by the way, I have a 96cm inseam so I have even longer legs than you at a smaller overall height, that's why my bikes end up looking so ridiculous. For some reason I don't have a problem with reach though despite a short torso, it's just the bar height that ends up giving me discomfort.

I just built a new bike with a frame that's as long as my current one but with a longer headtube so that should be a lot more comfortable. Haven't really gotten around to riding it because of terrible weather though.

The main reason for shorter cranks on fixies is pedal strike: Since you can't stop pedaling you also have to pedal through corners so you risk hitting the ground on your downstroke when you lean into a corner. Track bike frames have a higher bottom bracket because of this but many people convert road frames into fixies which makes this an issue. In many velodromes, cranks longer than 170mm are actually forbidden due to risk of damaging the track.

Judging by leverage, I would expect longer cranks to give more leverage, making stopping easier on a fixie.
