>ITT: Workhorse / commuter bikes without fenders, racks, and lights.
It's not like you need the 'full loaded touring' look to get across town. Playing in traffic on a road or track bike is totally a thing in North America, and more power to ya I guess. But how are these bikes different from NOT workhorse / commuter bikes? And what do you do on the rainy nights when you need to bring some groceries back?>>895436

Why don't you show us your commuter bike?

Please, the bikes posted in this thread are what I'd consider beaters. That's what a commuter/ workhorse is, a bike you don't mind destroying by riding the piss out of it.

Yes, it's based on an Omnium obviously but I used a 26" frame for the rear to make it more sturdy. Scavenged most of the parts from some used mountain bikes, down tube is a steel pipe out of a construction site dumpster that had the perfect measurements. Spent maybe 200 bucks on this thing and I love it.

i don't know. if you look at it from purely a commuting/getting around town point of view its great. not the fastest, but comfy, easy to ride, can haul a good amount of groceries. i can even load mine up and go camping with it when i want.

but the better i make my bike for commuting and around town, the less useful it is as a "bike". it cant go fast, i cant really use it for exercise. i love my hybrid but the more i ride the more i want something else for actual "cycling".

people here do actual "cycling" everywhere they go. everything must be race spec ultra light hi speed low drag. add in some serious logo/badge envy and boom. shit on hybrids.

You actually have good point there. I have both a long john and this one and there's really only one advantage to the Omnium style frames, they're much lighter and much more maneuverable than a long john. It feels more like riding a normal bike whereas a long john feels like riding a tank (which can be fun in its own way).
That's why many bike messengers use them, they're great if you only need to transport something like a package that wouldn't fit on a normal bike. That being said you can haul some crazy stuff with them if you really want to but they ride like shit with a lot of weight on them.

So yeah, I agree a long john style bike is better suited for its actual purpose, albeit a bit slower.

No I said they are beaters. Beaters can be nice or shitty, all my bikes are my commuters depending on what I feel like riding.
My commute has an option of single track so I ride this most days, it now has a front rack and aero bars as a joke.
>>
>>895645
The frame is a Paké C'mute. It's discontinued few years back. It was really cheap when it was available, like 300USD or something. It's similar to other steel cyclo-cross frames like surly cross check, all city space horse, vélo orange camargue.

>whats the car/bike relationship in russia like
every year on russian road dies foreign cyclist. of course not so many ! 1-2 in year. but many russian cyclists dies in cityes under car wheels. and not in a city, MOST DANGEROUS in russia is federal highway. for our automobilists is normal drive the car against rules. sometimes they DONT KNOW rules of road driving, because you can BUY rules, you pay the cops for the theory exam and after this you go to the driving exam. if you not so stupid you can get it. hahaha buy them as much as the way get a legally! and in all country very many stupid ass which name here "дoлбoёб"(untranslatable: chisel and fuck, but in russian chiseling It is the same as the "fuck" ) , "вoдятeл" (wordplay: driver and woodpecker. woodpecker here name for fools). when you every day start you bike trip here, you must know, what you can die. many assholes can stop and say - " What a fucking you doing on road ? you are cyclist! cyclist is untermensch! cyclist must ride go on a sidewalk. " but if you not moron you can drive on car-road 90% and 10% ( because in russia not bike-road, only for cars and for people) whitout doing discomfort for another drivers and pedestrians. from the news-site : "The famous cyclist 72-year-old from Volgodonsk Alexander Grechkin death brought down wagon

The race was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War

Wednesday, April 1, about 13:30 on the 290th kilometer of the federal highway M10 Moscow - Saint-Petersburg in the Tver region of an accident that killed a well-known 72-year-old cyclist from Volgodonsk Alexander Grechkin.

According to preliminary data of Police of the Tver region, 42-year-old driver of MAN, moving in the direction of St. Petersburg, was distracted from the controls to adjust the radio station, which is why for some time lost control of the wagon, left the road and knocked down a cyclist.

Removed the slicks and fenders for the winter. Replaced with knobbies.

Still slips and slides a little.
>>
>>902285
I have no experience with this at all, but my logic says that you can't compare snow to dirt. A knobby tread may be a little better than a slick of same width, but you're gonna slide around regardless, maybe even more with a knobby, since snow wont build up in the tread on a slick. Only a tire with metal studs would make a significant difference in traction.

Am I right, or am I retarded, I would like to hear some opnions on this?

I had 2.1" slicks on here before and it was awful in the snow.

Studded tires would be better for when there's ice, but it doesn't ice quite enough for me to get them. I feel like the tread is certainly an improvement than the slicks though.
>>
>>902307
allright, guess i'll try some knobbed tires if we get serious snow here this winter. I just hate ice though, damn its the most scaring shit when riding a bike.

before you tell me it's not suitable for everyday, i shall state that trackstands are quite easy with a little practice

plus cagers see you from far away and passes you with a large safe distance so that i don't harm their car if I fall on it

Knobs will always be better than slicks for snow. A softer compound, longer & siped knobs, and a tread pattern with lots of open space works best for snow, mud, and other loose surfaces.

Studs do nothing at all on snow, and only help for ice.

mombat tells me it's "Fillet Cro-Mo". It's pretty darn heavy. Guy who owned it before was from Cali, and from being made four years before I was born I'm amazed at how few scratches there are and how solid the color is.

Nice tires. Pretty sure they are extinct but I picked up 4 of them on ebay a while ago. Deepest tread of any bicycle tire made I believe at 9mm on the side knobs.

Only old tire designs come without sipes, so I will have to add some myself. Tedious work, but I somewhat enjoy modifying and rejuvinating my old knobby treadswith a heated carbide cutting tool.

Pic related, the one I use. Made for dirt bike tires so the blades are a little large for closer spaced knobs but it does the trick, goes in like butter.

You are either poor or very cheap. You haven't even got bar tape on the bike and I'm assuming you just ride around in jeans and a t-shirt with bare hands. Get a better bike and melt that one down for scrap metal man. You'll thank me down the road.

With options to build up fenders and racks, absolutely.

If anything it's too nice, depending on where you'd be leaving it, so invest in a good lock too.

I'd personally ditch the toe clips for flats or clipless.

Yeah. It's a solid ride and once it gets going it hauls ass. I'm working on pic related since my commute got a bit longer. It's about 20lbs lighter. Gonna put some Nitto moustache bars on it with pearlecent tape. Was thinking about getting a batter saddle. Any thoughts?
>>
>>896125
Less air drag front to back, traded for increased resistance laterally. Heavier than normal spokes but you don't have to true it until you get a critical failure and have to buy another.
>>
>>895917
This bike needs way more credit
>>
>>908885
that is really similar to what I commute on.

Just bought a bike today, two things

Do you guys take off the front wheel and lock it up too?

Also who /Ulock/ here?
>>
>>911327
For being a middle-aged man's basement abomination?
>>
>>911340

I don't take the wheel off, I just put my ulock through the front wheel, whatever I'm locking the bike to, and the frame. Can be tricky depending on what pole I'm locking it to, but I make it a point to do so. I've already gotten front wheels stolen, and I'm not risking my naked fork out there.

Off subject a little, fixie bike Im trying to ride has those skinny valve stems that arent on normal tires. I have lost the adapters for them and was wondering if there is some kind of jerry rig. I can use to compensate?

you can cut the end off a plastic presta valve cap and use that as a presta- schrader converter but you won't get many psies

Is that weight measurement for a single wheel? Good grief.

My whole wheelset weighs less than that and it's quite deeps.

You're not getting more of a workout though, you'd just be going slower.
