Nothing wrong with a gronk; it's a pleasingly balanced design. Outside frames, the body is neatly centred on the wheels, the curve of the cab roof is carried along the edge of the bonnet. It's functionally pleasing to look at.

Now the Westerns on the other hand have no good reason to look this good apart from the fact that they were designed to look this good. The GWR (okay, BR WR) gotta GWR.
>>
The Arzen design "broken nose" design looks pretty good.

It's a shame that the spotlight spoils the line of the roof, but yeah I like that.

One or two occasionally do runs for other locomotives if there is a shortage, a couple went to museums and most are scrapped sadly.
They didn't take the highly increased train-weights they had to move, combined with lessened maintenace and partly even regional service all too well in the long run.

It's a trap point. It's used to stop the train on that line if it were to start moving when the points at the bottom of the picture are set against it; instead of rolling along on to the other line (potentially hitting something) it just gently rolls off the rails and stops without fouling the other line (hopefully).

When the points are set for that line, the trap point will also close so that the train can run over them.

Gonna dump some NZ stuff because I don't think it gets seen an awful lot. Some OC, some shit form the web.

This is NZR F Class, #13, Peveril. When he's working, he's the oldest working steam locomotive in New Zealand.
Built in Glasgow by Duebs and Co. in 1872, he served a variety of roles, before ending work as a shunter in the port of Lyttelton, being one of the few locomotives shot and light enough to be able to shunt on the wharves of the port.

Up next, the NZR K class of 1878, one of the few remaining Rogers-built locomotives anywhere.
They were the first American built locomotives in New Zealand and were far better suited to our rails than their heavy British counterparts.
Initially used on crack express trains, they were eventually relegated to passenger trains on regional branch lines, and even there they gave rise to one of the most famous New Zealand passenger trains, the Kingston Flyer.

KA 942 on Cass Bank.jpg
367 KB, 1024x578
After the original K Class was withdrawn by the mid 1920's, the K designation was free to be used on a new class of locomotive. This became the K class of 1930, designed for heavy freight and express passenger roles in the North Island, the K and Ka class never set foot in the South Island. Only the Kb class of four locomotives, designed to pull freight up the demanding grades of the Midland Line through the Southern Alps ever worked in the South Island.
In preservation, the South Island has proven a popular stomping ground for the Ka class in preservation.
Here, the partially-streamlined Ka 942 pulls an excursion over the Cass Bank, on the Midland Line.

NZR EW Class.jpg
84 KB, 800x535
For the final installment of "Trains that look good in New Zealand", we have an Electric locomotive.

The NZR EW Class was the most powerful locomotive class in New Zealand service upon introduction in 1952. Rated at 1800 horsepower, they were found to be capable of up to 3600 horsepower.

Built on a then-unique Bo-Bo-Bo wheel arrangement, the powerful locomotives were capable of running over lightly-laid branch lines, the class was primarily used for passenger workings, but was in reality, a jack of all trades, adept at either passenger or freight workings.
Two exist in preservation, neither in regular service.

Yeah, they had more individual charm and character. I'm guessing it had to do with manufacturing processes at the time and the fact that railroading was in its nascent stages. There were small lines everywhere so having an engine was a matter of pride.

What went wrong?
>>
>>924086
What do you mean?

Why are there no examples left or why did they stop using them?

For the former, it's because many were written off and scrapped because of small accidents or fires and also because those surviving when they were pulled from service were large sets and no museums had the room for them.

As far as why they ceased service. Well that's because they were a highly experimental train set. As far as I know, it was the first production tilting set, and also the first passenger set powered by turbines. They had a series of teething issues and never quiet lived up to their expectations.

Overall, the TurboTrain is an interesting piece of railroading history that is sadly just that now.
>>
>>924088
>it was the first production tilting set
Nope. The Talgo tilting tech had been in use for a while when the TurboTrain was introduced. (pic related)

>They had a series of teething issues and never quiet lived up to their expectations.
The later CN 7 car sets where pretty reliable actually. The main problem was that they were expensive to run after 1973 due to their turbines. The cheaper diesel-powered LRCs replaced them and no one would take the remaining sets.

I don't know what it is, but for some reason I really don't like this style of engine

Maybe it's that all the fittings, the lamp, cab, cow-catcher, steam dome and spark catcher all look really oversized, compared to the boiler at least.
And being short, but not short enough to be cute, probably doesn't help

Later american steam is pretty gorgeous though

>>
>>924086
>Why are there no examples left or why did they stop using them?

DMUs were a big think globally in 50-60s, but high maintenance costs eventually made traditional locomotive pulled trains more attractive.
>>
>>924086
Turbines are not really good for train use. They have a good power-to-weight ratio, but are only efficient in a narrow powerband they don't get to run in most of the time, giving the train a horrendous fuel consumption. The turbines also tend to get reliability issues through the high number of load-changes. Add that to rather limited capacity at high price per train-set, the therefore low amount of trainsets built making maintenance much more problematic as well, and you can guess why they couldn't operate economically.
>>
>>924260
Speaking of Turbines.
>>
>>924260
You don't run turbines with mechanical connections dumb dumb, you use it to power an electric generator which powers electric motors for the wheels.
>>
>>924415
Nice assumptions, nobody actually said otherwise.

Even though a turbine (or diesel) engine is not mechanically connected to the wheels of a locomotive via a mechanical transmission, the powerplant's output still needs to be variable in order to control how much current is supplied to the motors.

Ascetic:

characterized by or suggesting the practice of severe self-discipline and abstention from all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons.

I think you mean "aesthetic".

But here's an ascetic train.

"In the Mahaparinirvana sutra, the Buddha tells his followers that they can attain merit and a noble rebirth by going on pilgrimage to the places where he was born (Lumbini), gained enlightenment (Bodhgaya), first taught (Sarnath), and attained Nirvana (Kushinagar).

Buddhism, one of the world's great religions, traces back with the life of Siddharth when a curious wandering prince from the small Shakya Kingdom located at the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal, began his quest for the ultimate truth to solve the mystery of existence. He renounced his royal pleasures and meditated beneath the sacred Bodhi tree at Gaya for years before he attained spiritual enlightenment.

Come, discover the path to enlightenment with the Buddhist Circuit Special Train."

I'm pretty sure this is the most ascetic train there is.

Turbines, you say?
>>
>>924086
Bombadier JetTrain was an interesting compromise in that regard, using a smaller diesel for low speed ops, and a turbine as a big honking APU to assist the diesel for high speed. Functionally it's a good compromise. Now if the turbine is a common aeroderivative like they use in peaker natural gas powerplants (frame 6+) then maintenance via GE turbine lease pool arrangement is good. If I were to do something like that today though, probably want an A-B unit with the A unit having a moderate diesel coupled with multiple capstone microturbines using a common recuperator, with the B unit being a combination carbon flywheel KERS carrier and fuel tender.

I don't get this. Turbines on aircraft use variable throttle settings too. You have takeoff, climbing, cruising etc throttle positions.
Also, jet engines have come a long way since the 60's and 70's.
New materials and better design tools have enabled this.
I would also surmise that the vastly improved battery tech can help during temporary demands that require an immediate output of large amounts of current.
This should help ease the stress on the power plant.
I'm also going to guess that during engine design and testing fuel economy can be custom tailored for power and fuel economy at set rpm's.

But I'm not an engineer, I'm just saying.
If anyone has the answer I'm interested in knowing.

>flywheel KERS
Interesting idea. I didn't keep reading when I made my post.

I know a few companies are working on this concept. Even Porsche has implemented a system in their racecars.

Also, how neat would it be to see a pair of intakes or a roof air scoop feeding a powerful turbine?

Maybe for high speed passenger trains could gain some sort of performance gain using a ram air effect?
I know non boosted piston engines can benefit from that. I'm not that knowledgeable about turbines.
>>
>>924589
>Turbines on aircraft use variable throttle settings too. You have takeoff, climbing, cruising etc throttle positions.

And at anything below cruise power, they're terribly inefficient. Takes quite a lot of fuel just keeping the high pressure turbine/compressor up to speed.
>>
>>924591

Duty cycle defines energy storage requirements. It may be unfavorable to have a KERS dedicated B unit, but having B-unit traction motors (like a slug) may be attractive for passenger service. The Green Goat switcher uses I believe a fuel cell and lithium batteries as it's very peaky in power consumption, too much for supercaps (and maybe KERS), so having your powerplant sized for average power and your energy bank covering the peaks is sane.

Turbines, like most engines, have preferred power RPM bands. Thu, rather than having one large turbine, having multiple turbines that you can turn off sequentially can better match performance needs if highly variable. Interesting thing about capstone miroturbines is their sizing and their recuperator design. If you need forced air to cool your resistor bank, rather than a fan, used the forced draught of the microturbine as it needs the preheating.

Ram air effects won't be worth it at usual HSR train speeds unfortunately unless you are hitting the top end.
>>
>>924589
The difference in the reliability department comes form the amount of throttle changes. The aircraft takes off and then maintains a constant and predictable speed for for a very long. Trains however have to accalerate and decelerater a lot more often. Especially passenger trains, where turbines would make more sense then in freight trains. (Power rather than traction). While the plane maintains its speed for hours, the train with have stops at the very least every 30min (and that would already be very long).

>>924415
That would be advanced stupid. Even with generators or hydronamic coupling in between it still doesn't work well though.

>>924465
>a turbine as a big honking APU to assist the diesel for high speed
has been tried https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DB_Class_210
Maybe with todays technology it'd work. The KERS might actually help a lot here.
I'd rather use the turbine for basepower though, and the diesel for peak, since diesels have decent efficiency at lower loads as well.
>>
>>924589
You're asking to add a whole lot of complexity and operating maintenance and shit that can and will go wrong to a system that has perfected simplicity to almost always run no matter what.

The toppest-tier diesel locomotive in the US is fundamentally unchanged from the first diesel locomotives of the 1930's. You have a big diesel engine turning a big generator and while the generator doesn't make DC anymore, it is still the same.

You're asking to add a finicky and maintenance-heavy technology which rightly died out on the rails over thirty years ago to replace the reliable heart of a locomotive and strap on a big system of batteries which will also need maintenance and periodic replacement

Railroads are obsessed with machinery that is simple to run, simple to repair, and doesn't break the bank to fuel. That's why turbine locomotives don't run on mainlines anywhere.

That's the livery Stepney wore when the Bluebell first opened. They painted him in BR Black to celebrate 55 years of the preserved Bluebell. Sadly he's on static display for now.

>In the first few months of 2010 the minimum boiler work to get the loco back into steam for our 50th anniversary celebrations was done, and Stepney remained available for limited service until its main steam pipe failed in early 2014. It was repainted into the black (lined with red) livery it carried 55 years ago in the Bluebell Railway's first season, but on withdrawal from service has been repainted again into its traditional Stroudley Golden Ochre. At its next major overhaul it will require new cylinders, the castings for which are already to hand, significant work on the frames and major boiler work.

Its a Danish Y-tog which used to run on the Odderbanen.

Now they changed to the ugly-ass Siemens Desiro. Pic related.

Pic: Desiro in the UK. Why is everything we get worse? "Hey we make desiros with cool full height windows, but let's not include anything similar for the UK spec ones."

It looks like a totally different train, why don't they call it something else?

I really like the GWR 1400 and Autocoach. Such a great model, and I love the working autocoach. Shame the sound pack add-on both enhances and ruins it at the same time.

As for route, I've been driving on the Riviera in the 50's a lot.

mines the new great western mainline route, and the surprising like the class 153 just as it's my local route and most of the time i'm on the train it's a class 153, i'm a sucker for the familiar.
