Found this neat interactive street designer;

Show me your ideal urban street setup /n/, or if there is a section along your commute or regular riding that is poorly designed try recreating it here and let's discuss how it could be made better.

I live in a sprawl death zone where walking/biking/transit might as well be illegal and this is what most of the roads near me look like. Some of our arterials even have full acceleration/merge lanes that are actually longer/wider than the interstate highway that cuts through the city.
>>967176
24 meters wide street in an area with buildings 2-3 levels high? Are you american or something? If you want some public space, just made a square, park or play ground.
Because this is one of problems in US transportation - huge as fuck streets making longer distances (affecting walkability and public transport), lowering tax income per maintained area (new asphalt, snow plowing, water pipes) and so on.
Read strongtowns blog to get idea what I am talking about.
Also that building setback offered in website is stupid. There should be also building with no front "garden".
>>967184
Hello fellow flyover.
>>967415
Actually here is a more accurate representation of my flyover shithole. You don't find building more than 3 stories high in Kansas.

This is where I am thinking of moving into. They put the light rail down the center of the street and are expanding it to Fleet Command
>no shared space option for general purpose small streets
Just imagine an annoyed driver somewhere in this picture.
everyone in this thread is a retard. Best street config possible. I don't know how wide lanes should be so I just used the defaults and expanded sidewalks.

Hey genius you didn't account for the door placement on the buses. Bus riders would be existing onto the bike lane.
>>968979
*exiting.
>>968980
yeah I made a new version that fixd this. Thanks tho m8!
>>968935
buses and streetcars should run in the same lane, otherwise you're wasting space
>>967176
>those massive bus shelters
It would be perfect if they removed the sign and made it a tad narrower.
>>969004
Separating them is actually a pretty good idea. Buses could bunch up and cause traffic on the tram lane which would cause major delays for the trams (plus sharing the lane would make it impossible to implement off-board ticketing). Most tram/LRT/whatever systems don't allow buses on tracks for a good reason.
>>968995
Did you eliminate the bike lanes or jsut moved them elsewhere?

Sure.
this is the bulk of my current bike commute

Not in my streets.

>bike lane between transit shelter and the tramway
Please don't do that... I'd rather bike with the cagers.
Shared bus/bike is good imo, but is it really a good idea to put a streetcar in one direction and a bus in the other ? why not 2 bus lane or 2 tramway line ?
>>969035
>Please don't do that... I'd rather bike with the cagers.
Separated from streets and set up so you'd don't have to cross them tram tracks. In case of a tram unloading passengers, you'd just have to stop for a while, not so hard.
>Shared bus/bike is good imo
If it's wide enough for the bus to overtake (or with enough stops for bus to go slower than) the bicycle.
>but is it really a good idea to put a streetcar in one direction and a bus in the other ? why not 2 bus lane or 2 tramway line ?
Shit got too narrow to put more shit in there.
Think I should just scrap the car lanes entirely?

if it's a tram, it's essentially indistinguishable from a bus on rails. if it's light rail, you should be ashamed of yourself for running it at grade.
either way you are doing it wrong.

Could be express/local service, with bus and tram going the other direction one street down
How am I supposed to design a street that has just one level? That's ridiculous.

>>969228
>How am I supposed to design a street that has just one level?
Does it have heavy rail down the middle?
>>969090
FUCKING YES
>>967176
Do they have an option for shared path/sidewalk?
>>969042
In my town we have pic related, it's a wide boulevard with a "side"walk in the middle of two tram lanes inbetween 2 car lanes and with parking lane and side walk on each sides of the street. The middle sidewalk is for pedestrian and cyclist (as the sign shows), and the tram stations are on the middle sidewalk.
Allong the boulevard there is a lot of university and highschool buildings so there is a lot of people taking the tram and bycicles. I can assure you that this is unpleasant for cyclist and pedestrians. There is a tram stop every 250m so in the rush hour i ride my bike on the cage lane. The cage lane is pretty narrow and the city bike friendly so cars won't try to overtake, which makes the car lane pretty confortable.

Bicycle conflicts aside this looks really comfy

>>969412
You idiot. Why is the tram not in the middle? Why are there no bicycle lanes? Where is the tram lane?
My street. Left sidewalk used to be shared with bicycles and then two enormously wide car lanes on the road until they put down new lines and threw the bike lane in one direction onto the street.
>>969764
>Why is the tram not in the middle?
Easy access to pavements, I'd assume

We have no need for emergency medical services. In this world, when your time comes, you go. Life itself is harmonious and happy. If you die here, you can rest easy as you have lived on heaven on earth.
Cagers just would not understand. Sad
>>969877
This is what our Ambulance looks like.
Can it get you there in time? Very well. You are fortunate.
over 220 lbs? I'm sorry to say but you should have utilized the bike lanes more while you were alive. Goodbye my friend

Having the passengers disembark by the sidewalk is easier than getting off on an island and stopping traffic.
>Why are there no bicycle lanes?
There are no bicycles of course.
>>971868
Bus lanes on the side of the road make buses much slower. You get right turns, entering/exiting garages and services, and the ever present illegal parking "just to go to the ATM one sec". Bus/tram lanes on the center of the street are basic to getting good speeds.
We have a shitload of bus lanes on the side of the street and our buses have an average speed of 12km/h, which is just ridiculous.
>>971303

>>968938
>Shared bus/bike lane
This would be a continuous death zone in my country.
Bikes ride 10...20 km/h. Buses drive 50...70 km/h, pass intersections through red lights and generally act recklessly to follow their time schedule. They also have right of way to change lanes when exiting a bus stop. Anyway, this is a bad idea even if you have polite bus drives since it would cause a massive slowdown in bus traffic which can lead to people preferring car transport instead.
A street before and after construction in my town. The tram track is narrower gauge than most tram networks so it actually needs less space than cars.
>>971872
Bus lanes on the right being blocked by illegal parking is a cultural difference. It's mostly only prelevalent in areas with chaotic traffic like India and New York where drivers have lost all hope of anyone giving a crap about traffic laws.
>>971956
That would be Basel then? I know they are one of the few places that still have the old 2.5 metre between track centers loading gauge, most other places either converted to 3 / 3.2 m or closed down.
Plebeians.
>>969309
>People on the sidewalk WALKING by foot

kek, can't be done. Pic related, the major thoroughfare where I used to live in Brunswick, Melbourne, Australia.
As you can see, it has two lanes each way, with one lane having shared tram/car traffic and the other lane having parking. Space for bicycle/motorcycle filtering fits in there somewhere too. In the mornings the citybound parking lane is made a clearway to accommodate more traffic, and the same in the afternoons for the outbound parking lane. Speed limit is 40km/h, but can attest to the fact that if you drive down there you will average under 15km/h. Trams likewise are slow as fuck. The only people getting anywhere quickly are those on two wheels. And the only way to fix it is to knock down buildings on one or both sides of the street to make it wider.
>>972237
>the only way to fix it is to knock down buildings on one or both sides of the street to make it wider.
Could just remove the parking. Or disallow car traffic and only let the trams and motorcycles use the street. The cars would then have to drive or park in the side streets. Quite similar to this one >>971956
>>972243
Removing the parking would be a partial solution, since peak times would be absolutely choked. If you look on a map, the parts of this road north and south of the mess both have at least 2 dedicated car lanes each way.
Disallowing car traffic isn't feasible unless you go full /n/ and remove cars entirely from the inner city, since the next suitable side street is 1-2km over and has similar issues.
One thing I forgot to mention is that there's also a train line with a dedicated bicycle path next to it running parallel about 100m away. So at least cyclists don't have to deal with the bullshit.
>>972248
Then the only thing left to do is to make some of the side streets exiting one ways or dead ends so they don't allow traffic onto the main street.
>>969874
I think cars should not disappear completely but they should not be allowed on every street. Car drivers should drive to a nearby parking lot a few blocks away, then walk to their house.
>>970060
>single one-way tram lane
How do passengers go to the other way then? The other travel direction is probably on a parallel street. The ambulance would drive accordingly.
>>972283
Just get rid of free parking.
If drivers have to pay the market rate for parking at each end of their trip they'll drive a lot less.
>>967176
>>969618
>>969618
Agreed.
>>969440
I made the street.
>>972237 (you)
>>972243

>>972258
I think I've figured out a solution: build down instead of sideways. Remove the parking, make the centre lanes dedicated tram lanes, and add express inbound/outbound lanes *under* the road instead. Probably take the opportunity to bury some of the building electricity wires too.
Pic is what Sydney Road turns into once it gets closer to Melbourne CBD south of Brunswick.

What is this meme about Ambulances and streetcars?
I've seen this before.
Future design for the main station square. It's on the northern end of the actual station (which is on the left in this picture) and only serves public transit. Car access and parking garages are on the southern end.
The central tracks will be raised, so that highfloor tram-trains (that also happen to be bidirectional) can have level access on the outer tracks, opening doors on the left side. While lowfloor unidirectional trams will have level access on all four tracks.
>>972603
Excellent, but where's the other tram track?
>>972682
The next street on the right
>>972690
Do you mean the nonexistent tram tracks in the street on the right or the one to the right of that? Either way you are retarded and it shows.
>>972780
There are 2 streets visible on the image. The other tram track is on a 3rd street which is not visible on the image. Duh...
